1. WHY IN SPAIN?

The answer is straightforward: because it's easier, it's faster, it
produces better results and - just as important - it's much more
stimulating and enjoyable. Studying a language at home, whether at a
school or on a correspondence course, demands a lot of energy and
discipline. You have a million other things to do and each time, before
you go to your class or start your homework, you have to "get back into
it". The only aim during your Spanish course with SLC is to learn
Spanish. It will come naturally.

During the course you will be living in Spain. You will be immersed in
the culture and you will hear, read and speak nothing but Spanish all
day. In this way you will pick up an amazing amount quickly, both inside
and outside the classroom.

A language is more than just grammar and a collection of words. It is a
means of communication between people, which is why you can never
really learn a language from a book, and why SLC puts the accent on
communication, talking and learning by experience. You will notice that,
both in class and outside. You will participate in daily life with the
teachers and your fellow students -the best way to strengthen your
speaking skills quickly- and, at the same time, understand the emotions
attached to certain words. Essential knowledge you can only obtain in
the country where the language is spoken.

When you learn Spanish in Spain, studying is definitely not dull or
boring. You will be introduced to its' rich culture, the fiestas, the
countless 'Tapas' bars and cafés, strolling through town and getting into
the street life. At weekends you can travel to the countryside or the
beach. You will visit the most beautiful cities and make friends for life
with people from all over the world. Learning Spanish in Spain is an
adventure.

The answer is straightforward: Because it's easier, it's faster, it produces
better results and - just as important - it's much more stimulating and
enjoyable.

2. WHY SPANISH?

At the end of the 19th century, 60 million people were Spanish
speakers. Today, nearly 500 million people across the world speak
Spanish! Spanish is the mother tongue of approximately 350 million
people in 21 countries (Mexico: 95 million, Spain: 40 million, Argentina:
35 million, Colombia: 35 million, Venezuela: 25 million, Peru: 20
million...).

Spanish is the second most used language in international
communication. Due to this increase there is a growing demand for the
media to be in Spanish: radio, television, newspaper, magazines.

Spanish is the second world language as a vehicle of international
communication and the third as an international language of politics,
economics and culture.

The demand for Spanish courses has doubled worldwide in ten
years. Spain has become 3rd most desirable country to live based on
standard of living, health and economy. Spain has one of Europe’s
fastest growing property markets (largely due to outside investment)

8. SPANISH LEVELS
SLC distinguishes 4 language levels, which include all learning needs:
from a first contact with the Spanish language to a superior course.
The first three levels subdivide themselves again into three learning
steps, this way we are able to guarantee that our students are assigned
to the most suitable level.

Our courses are designed to correspond perfectly to the levels
established by the European constitution as explained in detail in the
following section:

9. SPANISH PROGRAMS

At S.L.C. we believe that real learning is not simply confined to
memorizing a series of facts separated from their context and from their
surrounding world. Our Spanish school teaching style immerses
students in the Spanish lifestyle and culture, through the most modern
and effective techniques (using role-plays, rhythm exercises, word
games, etc.). At the same time, we prepare students for real intercultural
communication.

D.E.L.E. PREPARATION COURSE
(Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera)
D.E.L.E. (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) is the only official
certificate of Spanish for foreign students, which is issued by the
"Instituto Cervantes". This diploma is particularly important for all those
students who wish to study Spanish at universities in their country or
who would like to work in a Spanish speaking country. The specific aim
of this course is to prepare students to pass the exam on one of its
three levels:

1- First certificate in Spanish: corresponds with an elementary Spanish
level (B1 according to the European constitution). This diploma certifies
sufficient language command to understand and react appropriately in
the most common situations of every day life and to express wishes and
needs in a basic way.

2-Intermediate Spanish diploma: is the equivalent of an intermediate
Spanish knowledge (Level B2) and certifies that the candidate possesses
sufficient ability to communicate in normal situations of every day life,
which do not require any specialised use of the language.

3-Advanced Spanish diploma: is corresponding to an advanced Spanish
level (C2).
At this highest level, the candidates have to proof the necessary
linguistic abilities to communicate in situations requiring a superior use

of the language as well as knowledge about cultural conditions, which
are reflected in the language.

The certificates have unlimited validity and to obtain them, the
candidates have to proof their communication ability in different areas
as well as knowledge of vocabulary and grammar according to their
level.
Based on the instructions of “Instituto Cervantes”, at our school we
recommend the following minimal Spanish knowledge to take the exams
with guaranteed prospects for success:
   - First certificate in Spanish (B1): Corresponds at our school with a
         lower Intermediate level.
   - Intermediate Spanish diploma (B2): We recommend low
         Intermediate level.
   - Advanced Spanish Diploma (C2): At our school, it corresponds
with an upper advanced or superior level.
Until today, 100% of our students have passed the exams.
We offer two different types of D.E.L.E. courses:
-Intensive D.E.L.E. course: 10 general group lessons and 5 individual
classes of specific exam preparation.
-Super-Intensive D.E.L.E. course: 20 general group lessons and 5
individual classes of specific exam preparation.
The exams (all levels) are held in May and November. Prices and exact
dates are determined with approximately three month’s notice by
“Instituto Cervantes”. The enrolment fees are not included in the course
price.
For more information about the D.E.L.E. please contact our main office.

The teachers will attend to any question or special need the students
might have and provide them with the appropriate material.

TAILOR-MADE PROGRAMS FOR OPEN OR CLOSED GROUPS

These programs are designed for groups of at least 8 students who
would like to attend a course which suits their personal needs and
preferences. A teacher or guide accompanies all groups.
The group decides about the course contents, the number of class hours
(minimum 10 per week) as well as about the different cultural activities,
for example museum visits, day excursions, etc.

In order to provide the most suitable program for these groups, we offer
two different group types:

1- Open groups: As in this course type, the students have different
Spanish levels, they will have their Spanish lessons separately. However,
culture lessons and activities are held together.
This group type is suitable only for students who book a general
Spanish course of 10, 20 or 30 lessons per week.

2- Closed groups: Students of this group must have the same Spanish
level because the Spanish lessons as well as the cultural activities will be
held together in groups of maximum 12 students per class.

SPANISH + GOLF + SEVILLANAS + SAILING + DIVING

This course is a perfect combination for students who would like to
attend a Spanish course and besides, practice one or more activities. We
therefore adapt the class timetable to their special needs.
For this program type, there is no special previous knowledge required,
as it can be adapted to all levels.

SPANISH + WORK PLACEMENT
This course suits the needs of those persons who would like to learn or
improve their Spanish in a long-term course that broadens their

knowledge of a determined business field and complete their stay with a
period of practical training in a Spanish company. This way, the student
can enrich his curriculum vitae and has major possibilities to find work,
as he gets in touch with the Spanish business world and work reality.

At the end of the practical training, the participants will have obtained a
real first-hand impression of a company, increasing like this their
possibilities to enter the working world. All students will receive two
certificates: One issued by the academic centre and another by the
company where they have been working, setting out their personal and
professional skills as well as the most important assigned and
performed tasks.

As important innovation, we have started this year to offer a special
training course for future Spanish teachers. Besides of attending Spanish
classes, the student will be present at classes held by our teaching staff
and in addition have the opportunity to give classes and get in touch
with the didactic methodology.

12. ACCOMMODATION

Although the high quality of teaching is essential, a good place to stay is
also very important for your time here to be pleasant and productive.
S.L.C. pays special attention to student accommodations and student
housing options. SLC offers the following choices:

-Stay with Spanish Families: For students who wish to live the true
Spanish life and practice the language as much as possible, staying with
a Spanish host family can be the best option.
Living with a well-selected Spanish host family will enable the students
to see and learn everything about the Spanish lifestyle as well as our rich
culture and traditions. They will make friends, enjoy Spanish people and
have an excellent opportunity to practice their newly acquired Spanish
language skills in real-life situations.

Located in the extreme south of Europe, this proud, hauntingly beautiful
land bewitches more visitors than any other country on earth.

Shopping and Shipping

Travellers will find a great variety of items in Spain: ceramics, jerwelry,
suede and leather goods, designer clothing, shoes, fans, handicrafts,
antiques, art objects, etc. Many shops and all major department stores
will ship goods to the United States for a fee. If purchases have to be
shipped home, the following recommendations should be kept in mind:

1) Receipts should be obtained from the store indicating the
merchandise bought and exact amount paid. These receipts should also
indicate how much has been paid for packing, shipping and insurance.

2) shipping costs usually indicate only the expenses as far as a port or
airport in the U.S.A. There are additional charges to be paid here for
customs, port handling and forwarding to the final destination.

3) If the purchase has been insured, the store should give the buyer the
name and address of the insurance company. The tourist should be
aware that the company must, in turn, send an inspector to evaluate any
damages caused in shipping. The inspector's fee must be paid by the
owner of the merchandise. The tourist should also be aware that this
cost may run higher than the actual price paid for the merchandise.

Taxes and Tax Free Shopping

A 7 percent V.A.T. (Value Added Tax) tax is added to rates for all

price of each good, the V.A.T. paid for each item, as well as the
identification (name and address) for both vendor and purchaser. The
goods must be brought out of the European Union within three months
from the date of purchase.

At the time of departure from Spain and final departure from the
European Union territory, and before checking in your baggage, you
must bring your invoice(s) and the merchandise purchased to the
Spanish Customs in order for them to process your V.A.T. refund claim
(there is a specific booth for this purpose just prior to the entrance to
the international area at the international port, gate or airport). The
Customs Officer will process the original invoice, and the passenger
should return this invoice(s) to the corresponding vendor(s). The
vendor(s) is responsible for issuing the V.A.T. refund (although, usually,
the processed or stamped invoice can be turned in at a bank in the
airport for reimbursement). This V.A.T. claim will only be processed
when Spain is the final point of departure from the European Union,
otherwise, this claim must be processed in the country of your final
departure from the European Union (and always before leaving Spain or
the EU).

You might also find it convenient to reclaim your tax through Global
Refund Tax Free Shopping, a service offered by major retailers
worldwide. For further information on its procedures you may visit

average temperature of 18º C throughout the year.
It only rains occasionally in November and March (the rain being

coast.
It comprises several important urban sites: Marbella, San Pedro de
Alcántara, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucia and Las Chapas, as well as
several suburbs. According to 1998 data, the population amounted to
98,377 voting people, although it is estimated to grow over 105,000
during the current year 2001.
Marbella is surrounded by Estepona, Benahavís, Istán, Ojén y Mijas.

Fauna and Flora
The land is rich in cork oaks, oaks, pines, fig trees, chestnuts, carob
trees and, of course, olive trees. It is not that abundant in its fauna,
although Hispanic goats, foxes, rabbits and Mediterranean partridges
can be found. Unsimilarly, the sea offers a wide variety of species, such
as sardines, hinds, porgies, saurels, red mullets, as well as mussels,
clams, etc.

Rivers
Water courses run mainly short distances and flow straight into the
Mediterranean sea. The most important ones are the Guadalmina,
Gaidaiza, Verde y Real. There are also lots of little streams that have
been sometimes grounded by the town. The Concepción reservoir (able
to hold approximately 56 hm3), and several other dams (Pantano Nuevo,
Viejo y Medranas) complete the hydrographic scenario.

Location
Marbella lies at 36º 30' 34'' latitude North and 1º 11' 46'' longitude
West. It is approximately 22 m high above sea level.

                             PLACES OF INTEREST

As well as all that the future visitor to our city may have found
interesting in the previous pages, Marbella offers a never-ending list of
places of natural beauty mixing with avenues, parks, botanic gardens,
the promenade and leisure areas that will make our stay more enjoyable
than we could ever have imagined. In order to familiarize you with all

these, we are going to offer a brief description of some of these places
that make our city so unique.

PUERTO BANÚS

Many have defined the port as the pennant of the
Mediterranean and of our city. Taking a walk along
the port we will have the chance to see some of the
most impressive yachts in the world and we will also
be overtaken by some of the latest models in cars
from all over the world. The good-looking people, the
famous stroll around Banus in a relaxed way, enjoying
the magnificent restaurants that surround the port.

The small streets inside the port are crowded with pubs and
discotheques that contrast with the new avenues, squares and
Commercial Centers being built now and that the present municipal
Governing Team will finish with a large garden area (in front of
Cristamar). From Marbella we can access Puerto Banus by road, (10
minutes San Pedro direction), or by sea, as there are boats that carry
passengers from the Leisure Port in Marbella to Puerto Banus regularly
and at moderate prices.

JARDÍN EL ANGEL (THE EL ANGEL GARDENS)

Leaving Marbella in Istan direction, and situated in the El Angle Colony
(in front of the Aloha College), we find one of the most complete botanic
gardens on the Costa del Sol, which can be visited day and night as it is
very well lit.

In the 15.000 m2 of gardens we will be able to differentiate three
different styles of vegetable species. There is the "Jardin del Crucero"
the "Jardin Romantico" and the "Jardin Tropical. All are blended in the
same area and communicated by a network of little paths along which
the visitor can stroll peacefully.

AVENIDA DEL MAR (THE SEA AVENUE)

In the center of the city (between the Alameda Park and the Promenade)
we find one of the most relevant works to have been carried out in these
past few years. What used to be an abandoned park in deplorable
conditions has become a promenade and a resting area (with
underground parking), studded with the most complete collection of
sculptures by Salvador Dali, bought by the Marbella Town Hall during
the GIL Government. The marble floors (always kept clean and shiny)
makes the Avenida del Mar one of the most beautiful parts of Marbella.

PASEO MARÍTIMO (PROMENADE)

What initially seemed a dream that covered a few kilometers of coast has
become one of the busiest areas in Marbella, running along the coast,
from Banana Beach (El Cable) to Puerto Banus. Seven kilometers with
marble floors overlooking the sea make taking a stroll a very enjoyable
thing, joggers and other sportsmen and women take short stops along
the way to enjoy the culinary delicacies offered at the numerous
"Chiringuitos" to be found along the route.

THE ARROYO DE LA REPRESA PARK

One of the first works to be carried out by the Mayor

The small river bed that has now been walled in was totally full of bus,
dirt and was a rats nest has become a marvelous park in which there are
numerous artificial lakes, sports areas, children's park and the famous
Bonsai Museum; surrounded by large stone walls that make the whole
combination all the more beautiful.

                         PARQUE DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN (CONSTITUTION
                         PARK)

In the very center of the city we can find one of
the most beautiful and peaceful parts of Marbella.
With thick vegetation, a children's park, a small
                         astronomic observatory and with benches
throughout, this park is the ideal resting place for all those looking for a
little peace. Inside we find the auditorium with room for 600 people (all
seated). This is a very beautiful work and throughout the whole year
there are shows offered that vary from opera to theater, choirs, concerts
offering all types of music and never-ending cultural events that give
this area the prestige that it has acquired throughout these past years
with above all the "Cultural Summers", that surpass that offered in any
other European Capital.
