The busy model and gift shop at Buckfastleigh Railway Station, currently branded as “Expressway Models”, is open all day, almost all
year round selling a wide range of gifts ranging from Fancy Goods, Children’s Toys, Books and Pictures to highly sought-after railway
scale models from various leading manufacturers including Bachmann, Hornby, Peco, Gaugemaster, Ratio, Model Scene and Graham
Farish. We also have a range of second-hand model railway equipment, railway books, DVDs, gifts and souvenirs as well as an
extensive selection of Thomas® merchandise.
The South Devon Railway (SDR) is one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions. It is a seven-mile former
Great Western Railway branch line, which runs along the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. We run steam trains with
heritage rolling stock and, along with our linked attractions the Buckfast Butterfly & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Totnes Rare
Breeds Centre, offer a wonderful all day attraction for families and people of all ages.

The Retail Manager is responsible for managing and operating the SDR’s day-to-day retail business to maximise profitability through
appropriate marketing and retailing of products and model railway services, plus effective stock management. Income and profits
from the retail outlet play an essential part in ensuring the future of the SDR’s heritage railway operations.

Your proven retail skills, preferably gained in a similar tourism environment, coupled with real enthusiasm, and preferably with some
knowledge of the sector, will help make you part of the small, highly competent management team that runs the SDR, one of the
oldest heritage railways in the country.

                                                        Job Description
Job Title: Retail Manager
 Job Purpose:        To manage and operate the retail business to maximise profitability through appropriate marketing and
                     retailing of products and model railway services, plus effective stock management, to fulfil the retail
                     objectives of the SDR PLC.
                     To support the General Manager in ensuring that the operation and administration of the retail business is
                     conducted effectively and profitably.
                     The post holder will work in conjunction with the PLC commercial management team (CMT) members
                     and directors to secure the implementation of the business plan. As directed the post holder will be
                     involved in the development of all aspects of the company’s retail business.
 Reporting           Except where otherwise required by circumstances the post holder reports to the General Manager (GM).
                     The post holder is required to exercise an appropriate level of discretion in the discharge of the duties of
                     the post but at the same time must ensure that the GM is kept informed of any matter requiring his
                     attention. The post holder will liaise appropriately with the CMT on matters to do with pricing and other
 Operations          The operation of the railway takes place within an environment governed by
                         • the Trust Rule Book
                         • a Safety Management System approved by the ORR
                         • administrative instructions both written and verbal.

 General             All tasks must be carried out with the following considerations in mind:
                          •    utmost regard for the safety of public and staff alike is paramount
                          •   the timely completion of tasks is a key requirement of all duties;
                          •   the accuracy of communication both verbal and written is essential.
 Retail business     This is the operation of the following facilities
                         • Main station shop
                         • Model railway
                         • Provision of repair services to railway modellers
 Areas of responsibility (in no order of priority)

 The following list is indicative of the duties of the Retail Manager who may also be required to carry out such other tasks as
 may reasonably be required by the company.

 Staffing            To direct and supervise the staff on duty in the execution of their tasks.
 Presentation        Ensure that
                         • the shop is kept in a clean & tidy condition.
                         • products are advantageously displayed
                         • a high standard of customer care is promoted and maintained
                         • promote a suitable standard of staff turnout
                         • exit routes are unobstructed
 Marketing           To undertake such promotion of the Railway’s activities as may be directed, which may include
                         • responding promptly and appropriately to requests for information.
                         • Promote development of present and future business.
                         • Exploration of business opportunities
 Security            To ensure that
                         • The premises are kept secure doors and windows are to be locked and alarms are set on exit and
                             all appliances left in a safe condition.
                         • Keys made available to members of staff are to be controlled.
                         • Cash is handed over for banking or is appropriately secured.
                         • Operate security systems as required.
Safety          To ensure the safe operation of the shop and all areas in which activity take place. In particular
                    • To put in place and maintain routines to ensure the continuing cleanliness and hygiene of all
                        relevant areas
                    • To ensure that staff are appropriately clad for their working environment.
                    • To deal with minor infringements of the rules.
                    • Report serious infringements to the GM.
Purchasing      To place purchase orders for goods and services for such areas of the Company’s retail activities as may
                from time to time be directed. This is to be done with regard for Product Safety
                    • Budget provision
                    • Company purchasing policy (whether written or not)
                    • Economy
                    • Timeliness
Stock Control   With regard to likely demand, to ensure that:
                    • adequate stocks are on hand;
                    • stocks are kept within levels agreed with the Finance Manager & Director:
                    • stocks are properly rotated;
                    • stocks are kept securely;
                    • suitable stock records are maintained including data entry and submitted to the Accounts Office

Cash            Ensure that:
                     • Tills and price lists are correct and applied in accordance with company policy.
                     • the tills are operated correctly
                     • cashing up is done as required and
                     • the sales information up loaded daily.

Volunteers      The post holder will be required:
                To work with volunteers.
                To promote effective liaison between the Trust, its heads of department and volunteer groups in order
                that work on projects progresses smoothly.
                The reception of new volunteers and their introduction to work appropriate to their skills will be a facet
                of this area of activity. The post holder will encourage active volunteers to fill turns of duty in the retail
