Cue Real Ale!
Date: 26 June 2006

Status: For immediate use

The Wargrave and District Snooker Club is celebrating today after winning CAMRA’s
local Club of the Year award.

The Reading & Mid Berkshire branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, today
announced the first ever winner of its new Club of the Year award. This award is
made to the private members’ club in the local area that shows the greatest
commitment to serving quality real ale.

Graham Stone, Chairman of Reading & Mid Berks CAMRA, said “I’m very pleased
for Wargrave Snooker Club – they have a good range of interesting beers, which are
kept in fine condition. This area doesn’t have as many clubs as, for example, the
north of England, but they are an important part of our social infrastructure.”

He continued, “For one reason or another, many clubs avoid selling real ale – but the
Wargrave Snooker Club has proved that it’s possible for a small club to keep real ale
and to do it very well! Hopefully this award will act as an inspiration to other clubs in
our area who don’t yet carry real ale, or who want to improve their existing offering.”

Mel Davies, Bar Manager of the Church Street club, is delighted at his success. He
said, “I always ensure there’s plenty of real ale available and a variety on offer.
Guests are always welcome and members of other clubs and organisations can pop
in for a pint.”

The Club of the Year contest is judged by local members of CAMRA and is a search
for the club that offers the best real ale in the area. It is open to all private members’
clubs that allow entry to guests (i.e. are not just “members only”).
