Helpful websites:
www.homedepot.com www.menards.com www.lowes.comFor this project
you will design your own House, applying what you have learned in this
year as well as in previous years. For this project you are to do all
of the following:

1.) SCALE DRAWING (30 points)
   a) Draw your House to an appropriate scale (such as 1 unit² = 1 ft²)
      on graph paper.
   b) Use a protractor to measure, draw, and label the degree measure
of any angle that does not measure 90°, 180°, or 270°.
   c) Also mark the locations of all entry and closet doors, and any
      other important features.
   d) Clearly label each room of your House on the scale drawing, and
give its true linear measurements (ex. Kitchen = 8 ft × 10 ft).

2. BUDGET REPORT (40 points)
   a) You must spend at least $150,000 and no more than $190,000 to
build your House. A list of building requirements and costs is
      attached.

  b) Complete each of the attached tables, listing each room with its
linear measurements, perimeter, flooring, wall area, and volume.
These tables will help you figure out costs for building, wall
covering, and flooring your proposed House.

  c) Use this table to produce a circle, or table graph that shows the
percent of the overall cost used for each individual room in your
     House.

3. WRITTEN ANALYSIS (30 points) – In about 1½ - 3 typed pages, double-
spaced in a 12-point font with margins no more than 1-inch wide,
address each of the following…

  a) Describe what your ideas for the House were before you began to
determine the actual costs to build it?
  b) How did your ideas change once you began to see how much it would
     cost?
  c) What choices did you have to make in terms of the actual floor
plan, and in terms of building supplies?
  d) What was the most difficult part of this project for you? Explain
why this part of it caused you so much trouble.

  e) What did you learn while doing this project? Include experiences
with both budgeting and designing your House.
  f) How can you apply what you learned in doing this project in the
     future?

This project is due at the beginning of class on ___________.
BUILDING REQUIREMENTS:
 REQUIRED ROOMS: There must be at least two bedrooms, two
bathrooms, kitchen, and living room. You may decide to add other
rooms if you can afford it, such as a third bathroom, third
     bedroom, family room, etc.

 MASTER BEDROOM: The master bedroom must be rectangular, measuring
exactly 15 feet by 18 feet, not including space for one closet.
This is so we can go through how to budget for a room together in
class. Your Master Bedroom must be carpeted, and then painted
with TWO coats of wall paint. (Students may choose bright white
       wall or colored wall paint)

 BEDROOMS: All bedrooms must be at least 80 square feet, with a
minimum length and width of 8 feet.
  a) No two bedrooms may have the same length and width!
  b) They must also have at least one closet, which may be no larger
       than 25 square feet.
  c) All bedrooms must be carpeted, and then painted with TWO coats of
wall paint. (Students may choose bright white wall or colored
       wall paint)
  d) Closets: You do not have to worry about painting, flooring, or
heating closets, unless they are larger than 25 square feet – in
that case they must be treated as a separate room, with its own
       cost worksheet.

 BATHROOMS: All bathrooms must be at least 35 square feet, with a
minimum length or width of 5 feet.
  a) Bathrooms must be floored with small ceramic tiles, and then
painted with TWO coats of special Kitchen & Bath paint.

 KITCHENS: The kitchen must be at least 70 square feet, with a
minimum length or width of 7 feet.
  a) Kitchens must be floored with large ceramic tiles, and then
painted with TWO coats of special Kitchen & Bath paint.

 LIVING ROOM & HALLWAYS: The living room must be at least 150
square feet, with a minimum length or width of 10 feet.
  a) All hallways must be at least 4 feet wide. Students may have
     multiple hallways.
  b) The living room and hallways must have hardwood flooring, and
then painted with TWO coats of colored wall paint. (You must use
     TWO coats).

                              mrmccarthy@cps.edu

 BASEBOARD TRIM: All rooms in the house – except hallways – must
have their perimeter completely covered in baseboard trim.
  a) Each door will require two additional pieces of trim, which are
     only sold in 8-foot lengths.

 ALL ROOMS: The ceiling height must be 8 feet throughout the
house. The only exception is for an indoor basketball court,
which must have a 20-foot ceiling height (and must also have
        hardwood flooring).

 BUDGET: You must spend at least $150,000 and no more than
$190,000. You may not go under or over this budget, not even by
        one cent!
