Johnson, Moran Assume Leadership of VFW & Aux
It’s official! Our new State Commander is Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson, who assumed office on Saturday, June 27 at our 88th Annual Department Convention held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Past National Commander-in-Chief Walter G. Hogan performed the installation. As he intended, Commander Johnson “hit the ground running” with a Council of Administration meeting immediately following installation. In addition to the routine business traditionally conducted at this brief meeting, the Council also approved our offer to purchase a new property for our Department Headquarters in Madison (See Building Story), voted to secure at least $200,000 of the proceeds from the sale of our old building by earmarking it for our new VFW Foundation Trust Fund, and heard the opening volleys fired in Commander Johnson’s determination to drastiin the meeting, Council Members left understanding and agreeing that they have serious work to do at the upcoming Council of Administration at Wisconsin Rapids. The Finance Committee will have a full agenda in reworking the budget and presenting an acceptable financial plan for full Council approval at that meeting. Down the hall, the Ladies Auxiliary held their session installing the Department President, Linda Moran, and the rest of her Line Officers. Presiding at the installation was Past Department President and current National Chief of Staff Rita Byers. Following their installation, the Ladies also held a brief organizational meeting. Later in the evening, VFW Post 305 in Eau Claire hosted a joint reception for the new Commander and President. A good time was had by one and all. We wish both organizations a grand year ahead.

Headquarters Property Being Readied
After years of discussion, and at least one failed attempt, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Wisconsin, has succeeded in selling its long-time headquarters building on Hamilton Street, in Madison. After a negotiated adjustment allowing for unexpected problems with the current air-conditioning system, the building closed at a final price of $620,000, which was considered a good price for the property. From that figure, the real estate commission and other normal costs of sale brought the net revenue to Department to $579,000. (The Department Financial Statement shows a figure of $531,000. This number, derived by our outside accountants, reflects the net gain realized after accounting for depreciation.) The Department has until See building, Page 8

Fellow Veterans, Thank you for your confidence in me, selecttom ing me as your next State Sr. Vice Commander. lemmer As I have mentioned in the past, I’ve enjoyed serving you as your Jr. Vice. I hope all those State Sr. Vice who attended the State Convention had a great Commander time, especially any first timers. Please come 262-369-5905 back again. Now that convention is over we need to commit ourselves to helping Com- srvicecdr@wi.vfwwebmail.com mander Twiggy have a successful year. Now is the time to get out and sign up new members and put together programs to bring back those members that got away from us last year. As you know, the shortfall cost the Department around $25,000 in revenue. Speaking of revenue, now is also the time to sell our raffle tickets, and please return the proceeds to Department in a timely manner. This helps Steve Lawrence get an idea as to funds we are generating and how well the raffle is proceeding. If any Comrade has ideas for generating revenue please contact Steve at Dept. or any State officer. We are all ears! Again, thank you for your continued support and let’s remember to get out and “Aid our Veterans” for Commander Twiggy and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Thank you, Past Commander Gary Erickson, for year as part of your staff. A job well done! God Bless all of you, and God Bless America. Tom Lemmer State Sr. Vice Commander Greetings Comrades: Last weekend we were proudly waving our larry flags and celebrating our nation’s indepenKutschma dence at outdoor parties across the country. While some savored the barbecue, there were State Jr. Vice thousands of our comrades who have already Commander proven their love of country, loyalty and 262-949-1029 steadfastness, yet stepped up once again….to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made jrvicecdr@wi.vfwwebmail.com by the brave men and women who served to keep this nation safe. On July 4, my wife, Lilly, and I had the privilege of visiting the Tomah VA Hospital and witnessing the dedication of our VFW comrades as they volunteered their day to show that July 4 is more than just a holiday. Thanks to you all for honoring our hospitalized Veterans; for making their struggles a little bit easier. Thanks to our Ladies Auxiliary, to Kerm Adank of Post 7232 for hours of escorting, to Post 2112’s Roger Bender, Richard Coffin, and Wayne and Tracy Woodman who brought their daughters Angela, Tara, and Faith to put a smile on everyone’s face! And there were many, many more. We are proud Americans who appreciate the sacrifices made by our brave military men and women. We shake the hand of someone wearing the uniform and say, “Thanks for your service.” We fly Old Glory with pride, visit the grave of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice, spend time at a memorial or visit a VA hospital. There are times when we step away from the crowd for a few moments and think about our buddies and about what life would be like if our military had not been there every single time they were needed. Think about the millions of lives that would have been shattered if our heroes had not come when they were called. Then, thank whatever God you worship for the bravery and selflessness of those who served and serve today. For a grateful nation to be truly great, it must honor the sacrifices of its soldiers, and meet the pressing needs of our returning service members. Each of us in the Veterans of Foreign Wars shares in that legacy in some way or another. As a member of this great Department, I am forever humbled and grateful to serve our soldiers, Veterans, military families, and to honor those that were lost to us. On Independence Day, this year and always, let us pay our respects to our flag and to literally millions of Americans who served under those colors. Let us be grateful for their sacrifices and….never forget! Let us give thanks for living in the world’s very first democracy. Old Glory represents the hope of the world. Long may she wave!! Thank you for this privilege, Larry Kutschma State Jr. Vice Commander

Our 2009-2010 year has started and there are many changes. These changes have been Wilfred made to streamline the VFW of Wisconsin and “twiggy” accommodate increasing budget constraints. The most noticeable is we have reduced to johnson six primary committees and 13 Chairmen. Not State Commander only will this reduce budget spending, but it will also cut down the meeting time at Mid920-766-1491 Winter and State Convention. That extra time cdr@wi.vfwwebmail.com can be utilized to run Training Workshops in the afternoons. Reducing the budget expense and providing continued training and education about the VFW is a winning combination. The goals of the 2009-2010 year are as follows: 1. Membership - Attain 100% Department-wide. Membership is the most important factor to keep the organization strong. The better we do at membership determines how much better we do in all of our programs. 2. Core programs - Attain maximum participation in each of the following Programs: Service Officer, Buddy Poppy, V O D, Patriots Pen, Teacher of the Year and Youth Scholarships. 3. Hospital - Visit the VA Center and put a smile on the faces of our inpatient/resident Veterans. Become a volunteer at your nearest VA Center/Veteran Home. Even a few hours a month can make a huge difference! 4. Military Services Program - Support this program to the extent possible post by post. The service members and their families gain great respect and appreciation for the efforts of posts and districts who are actively involved and assisting them when needed. This will equate to new members. Operation Uplink, Adopt-A-Unit, M A P and Unmet Needs are the categories within this program and are explained in the programs manual. The Trust Fund has been going through a transformation from a simple trust fund to a trust foundation. Thanks to PSC Bill Hustad, the Foundation paperwork is almost done. The Foundation will be named The Wisconsin VFW Foundation, Inc. and will make VFW State of Wisconsin a 501-C3. The State Headquarters building in Madison has been sold. We are now looking at a new location in Madison. The price is right and the location is good. Barring no snags in the process, this will be the new Headquarters. Some $200,000.00 of the sale of the old building will be placed in the trust fund as well. This gives us future protections taking care of housing our current staff. You should have received your new Raffle tickets. Please send in your money and ticket stubs...could be the winning ticket in your envelope! I know some of you do not have the money, that’s ok. There is also a Post 50/50 Raffle. The Post that sells the 50/50 raffle tickets will keep half of the money and send the other half of the money to Department. These tickets can be sold during any public venue your post can get into. These tickets are not meant for you to sell to your membership, but out in your communities. Those areas that have gotten into County Fairs have a perfect opportunity to sell your tickets. The raffle program IS CRITICAL. The proceeds from the raffle pay salaries. Our employees work very hard for us, often without praise or raise! So let’s get back to doing the Raffle program for the right reasons and get those tickets sold in record numbers! Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson First, I would like to thank the membership for the confidence they have expressed in reelecting me State Quartermaster. As I stated at steve lawrence the convention, I will endeavor to do the best State Adjutant job possible for each of you. Quartermaster A reminder to all of the Quartermasters on your Quartermaster Bond, your current bond 608-255-6655 will expire on August 31, 2009. In order to be qm@wi.vfwwebmail.com properly bonded in accordance with section 703 of the National By-laws you must have a Fidelity (Surety) Bond on the Quartermaster, and any other accountable officers. This is not to be confused with the post insurance purchased through the national organization which has employee dishonesty coverage. The easiest way to make sure you have the proper bond is to apply through department Headquarters. I hope to see many of you at the C of A in Wisconsin Rapids on July 23, July 24 and July 25 for OTI. I also hope to see you at the King Veterans Home for King Day on July 26 this year!! Thank you for making this a better day for our Veterans. note to the district Commanders: Please make sure that Department Headquarters is advised of your District Meetings, dates, locations and times so the Commander can make assignments for the reps at your meetings. Also, your District will be inspected at your fall meeting. All Posts remember: Your June 30, 2009 audit is due at Department Headquarters no later than July 31, 2009. All audits and inspection forms need to be sent to Department first. Thanks. When you are making donations to National Programs, you do not need to send your check to Department. The checks for Operation uplink should be sent directly to National Headquarters. If you want to make sure you get credit for a program, make a copy of your check and send to the Program Chairman. If you are receiving requests from either National Headquarters or the VFW National Home, send your donations direct to the organization requesting. SiMPlE PROgRAM EARnS big buCKS FOR YOuR POST & dEPARTMEnT - AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO PARTICIPANTS! I wanted to write something concerning a new program that is available. It is the VFW Gift Card Store. Comrades and Sisters, I used the program yesterday to buy Gas Cards for my favorite station. All I did was change the way that I am purchasing my gas. My gas bill is about $350.00 to $400.00 per month. I used to charge this on my Gas Credit Card. Now I will use the Gift Card like cash with no additional cost. I am just paying for my gas on the front end instead of after the fact. The per cent of the card that is returned to the VFW Department of Wisconsin and a local VFW Post varies by supplier. I am also going to buy my groceries this way. It’s a way for me to help the organization without spending additional money. The trick will be to get our members and friends to use the system. There are no hidden costs. Until next month, take care!! If there is anything that I can do to help, please feel free to contact me. wivfw@tds.net , phone number, (608) 255-6655 or (608) 770-0590 cell. Remember “Aid OuR VETERAnS.” Thanks for all the work each of you gave this Department!! Steve Lawrence

MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Congratulations Commander W. Johnson Charlene Cobb and President L. Moran. I wish you both a great year. I believe this is going to be a State Chaplain challenging year for all of us considering 262-882-6022 the state of the state and the union. Daily we hear about more places downsizing or chaplain@wi.vfw closing altogether and more people needing webmail.com help to stay or get back on their feet. First, I believe we need to be actively involved in the decisions that are being made in our communities, counties, states, country, VFW – posts, districts, departments, conferences, and national organization. Those that choose to accept a leadership role need to represent the majority and not just their own special interests. They need to be setting the example that the rest of us follow. If they are not willing to do that, then they need to be replaced immediately (if not sooner) before they are allowed to do too much damage. Second, the motto of the VFW is to “Honor the dead by helping the living.” Our primary purpose is to see that our Veterans and their families and our service men and women and their families receive the benefits to which they are entitled because of their service to our country. This validates the sacrifices made by those that paid the ultimate price. We can and must prevail but it is going to take as much courage, strength, and determination as it took to serve in any of our wars or conflicts. This enemy is ignorance, complacency, greed, and bureaucratic red tape. To fulfill our purpose and make a real difference in the lives of our Veterans is to support our Veterans Service Office in Milwaukee. The three individuals, soon to be two, do a phenomenal job of assisting our Veterans and their families to navigate that bureaucratic red tape and get the benefits they need and deserve. Anyone that has received a 15 page form from the VA and doesn’t have a clue where to start, can appreciate the service provided by those who know what information to compile and how to research the necessary components of the claim. Posts, I challenge you – help the Department fund this worthwhile and necessary office by donating money earmarked for the Service Office. For those that have continuing fund raisers like steak fries, fish fries, bingo, pancake breakfasts, etc; you could give so much each month or quarter. For those that have an annual or semi annual fund raiser or from your relief fund, do an annual or semiannual donation. The objective is for the department to receive funds regularly for this office. Additionally, the Post Service Officer needs to keep his/her eyes and ears open to any Veteran or their family in distress. They need to be information central and know where to send that person for the assistance they need. Our Service Office needs those ears and eyes to make sure no one is lost in the shuffle. Be part of the solution, MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!! Charlene Cobb Chaplain Thank you for allowing me to be your State Surgeon again this year. In my last Gundel Metz column I had written that we wanted to do CPR training at the State Conference. No State Surgeon one contacted me before time to let me 608-698-8825 know that they wanted the training and one of our trainers had a family situtation that surgeon@ she needed to be at. wi.vfwwebmail.com We are going to try to set up the CPR training again at next year’s conference. So watch for the announcement about the training. I am working on trying to get other articles to help our Veterans and service members. Dr. Whittle will continue to write his column. Comrades and Sisters, The VFW 2008-2009 year has come and gone. I was told it would go fast, but Gary Erickson I didn’t think it would go by as fast as it Past did. As of this writing, our membership State Commander stands at 4th place in the Big Ten and 22nd 608-723-7373 in the Nation out of 54 departments. cdr@wi.vfwwebmail.com I would have liked to have seen better results with the membership as well as with the raffle. Although I feel we had a good year and got a lot accomplished. I would like to give a big thank you to all of our chairpersons and the District Commanders for all their hard work. We also need to thank all of the officers and members in the posts, because if you didn’t do the work we would have been a Department in a whole lot of trouble. I would like to thank all of the Department officers and the staff at headquarters for all your hard work. Commander Will, I wish you and all your officers the very best this year. I will be there to assist you in any way I can. Mike, a big thanks goes out to you for your many years as our Judge Advocate. I know you put in many hours and miles over the years and for that I am grateful, thank you. Bill, thank you for being my Chief-of-Staff, I enjoyed working with you this year, and for all the fun we had together during our travels together. We did the work, then we had fun. I wish you the best as you serve the Department as our Judge Advocate. You and Marla will always be good friends, but mostly you are more like family. Marla, it has been a joy working and traveling with you, from our first trip to the National Home for Jr. Vice training to the last day of State Convention 2009. I wish you all the best with everything that is in your future. Thank you so very much. I must not forget all the comrades and sisters of the 3rd District for all their support over the years as I went through the chairs. Thanks to Lana, my wife, and my family for all your time, support, and dedication. I couldn’t have done it without all of you. Uncle Red, thank you for being there for me whenever I needed you. Best wishes and safe travels Gary Erickson Past State Commander WHO KNEW? This year, my articles will be done as Arlene Banks educational, BUT FUN, pieces. Welcome to Linda’s Loop
The year of “Take Time Out for Veterlinda Moran ans” is on its way. Thank you to all who Department took the time out to stay for my installaPresident tion and make this day very special. It’s a great honor to become your 85th President. 920-337-9922 I hope to serve each and everyone to the dacqukid@aol.com best of my ability. To the Line Officers, and all who were installed: Congratulations! Thank you to PDP Rita Byers for being my Installing Officer and to PDP Lucetta Jasinski and PDP Lenore Otto for being the Installing Conductresses. Commander Twiggy, the roses were beautiful and the angel necklace was a great gesture in starting out our year together. The King Day Picnic is Sunday, July 26, 2009. Come and share a little happiness with those that have sacrificed so much for us. You might even see some of Nurse Frazzle’s friends in the park! Volunteers may arrive at the Marden Center for their assignments starting at 10 a.m. Get racing for members—Chief-of-Staff Judy Borg and Membership Chair Linda Feldkamp have a great year planned for all of us. Try to get some of your membership dues paid early. We would like a great showing at the Membership Kick Off at the National Convention in August. Please read all bulletins to learn what we must do to make Wisconsin 100% in all programs. The 2009 National Convention in Phoenix is around the corner, starting August 15. If you have not yet registered, please do so. This is the only way that you can receive the 2009-2010 National Program Book. The registration form is found on page 15 in the July Ladies Aux. VFW Magazine. The Program Book is very worthwhile, as it explains all of the National programs and awards. Let’s not forget our Quotas, Hospital Projects and Cancer Aid & Research. The Cancer Pin this year is a unicorn, wearing a pink cancer ribbon with the letter W surrounded by violets, our state flower. Please support all of these programs generously. If you would like me to visit your Auxiliary or attend a social function, please let me know well in advance. According to the President’s log book, 63 Auxiliaries have not been visited in the last four years. Well, Sisters, be prepared. I hope to put a big dent in that number this year. Until next time: When you have a gift - use it; When you have a chance - take it; When you need to risk - risk it. Hugs, Linda My sincere thanks to the Sisters of the Department of Wisconsin who made my year as Department President such a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience! Your gifts and good wishes; friendship and support; and all of your kindnesses and courtesies wherever I traveled will always be part of the memories I hold near and dear. Special thanks to our hard-working 2008-09 Line Officers, District Presidents, Program Chairmen and Committees, Hospital Volunteers and Auxiliaries who put forth such tremendous effort in our programs and activities, “Taking Care of Business for Our Veterans.” And extra-special thanks to all those who made our 2009 State Convention run so smoothly, especially the Convention Committee; the Credentials Committee; the Registration workers and our top-notch floor team. I hope all who attended had as much fun as I did! (I know M.T. Doolittle AND the Biker Babe had a blast!) Best wishes to Department President Linda Moran and the 2009-2010 team as we “Take Time Out for Veterans.” Safe travels to all – I’ll see you around!
Membership 2009-2010
And we’re off! A new year is underway and racing is the name and dues are the game! It is time to shift into high gear to help your District win “The Race of the Districts,” and receive the coveted “checkered flag” for 100% in Membership. Sisters, our members are the “fuel” we need to run our organization during the year, and we have a big job ahead of us, especially renewing those continuous members. There has never been a better time to “go life.” Life membership dues are very reasonable, and many Auxiliaries have even set up a payment plan to help their members pay in several installments. And the Auxiliaries benefit greatly: • Fewer annual reminders to send out – saving time AND postage • Fewer monthly transmittals for the Treasurer to complete • An annual payment from National for our “share” of the dues just to name a few! As you prepare your dues notices, consider including the life membership fee chart and urging your continuous members to “GO LIFE!” Our first challenge for the District Presidents is to bring as many transmittals as possible to the Chairmen’s Promotional Report meeting in Wisconsin Rapids on July 25. The prize for the most transmittals is two banquet tickets to the President’s Testimonial in October. So get into gear and get those dues collected and in your District President’s hands before the meeting. Dept. Treasurer Margie Saucerman will process all that she receives prior to that time as well, so rev up your engines and start collecting! As in the past, there will be numerous awards for Auxiliaries, Districts and Individuals from both Department and our National Director. These awards will be outlined in more detail at the Chairmen’s meeting, in future monthly bulletins and in upcoming editions of the NEWS. I look forward to working with each and every Auxiliary that needs me along with Chief of Staff Judy Borg; Treasurer Margie Saucerman and, of course, President Linda Moran. Please contact me at (262) 8894937 – from 5:30 – 9:30 pm is best - if you have any questions or concerns. Linda Feldkamp Dept. Jr. Vice President/ Membership Chairman

Words from the state service office
I was asked at the recent Service Committee meeting what was the difference between the County Veteran Service Officer and Veteran Service Officer. Being at a loss for an explanation, I requested assistance from a County Service Officer. This is his view: There are many differences between County Veteran Service Officers and Veteran Service Officers. Veteran Service Officers are hired by their parent organization and work with Veterans and their dependents on claims and pensions. This also includes any appeals through the VA Regional Office and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. County Veteran Service Officers are appointed or hired through their respective counties for the purpose of advocating for their county’s respective Veterans and dependents. Their authority comes from Wisconsin State Statute 45. Not only does this include assisting with filing claims and pension but also assisting with State Veteran benefits such as personal loans, home improvement loans, grants for aid, State Veterans homes. They will advise and refer Veterans when seeking other benefits such as GI Bill, replacement medals, Veteran Center counseling, filing claims for VA Insurance, burial benefits. County Veteran Service Officers are able to provide direct outreach by conducting nursing home and home visits to assist Veterans and dependents in applying for their benefits. Attending local
lee guerrero, Wisconsin Veterans Service Officer Veteran meetings to provide current information regarding Veteran benefits, participate in programs such as the Honor Flight Program for World War II Veterans, Operation Welcome Home, State sponsored Veteran Super Markets, Flag programs for Memorial Day are a few such programs. Interact with local, state and federal representatives on Veteran issues. Because of what they do locally the partnership between the Veteran Service Officers and County Veteran Service Officers is a good working relationship that has had a positive impact on our Wisconsin Veterans. The County Veteran Service Officers do a fantastic job and are greatly appreciated by the Veteran Service Organizations. Thanks to Mark Baldwin, County Veteran Service Officer for Washington County. Lee Guerrero VFW Veterans Service Officer eager volunteers listen as the planning session for a new Madison chapter of Honor flights is held at Post 1318, Madison.
Madison Honor flight takes off!
In Henry Hall at VFW Cranefield Post 1318, persons interested in getting an Honor Flight based in Madison met on May 9, 2009. Twenty-two people gathered to lend their talents to getting Madison’s Honor Flight “hub” off the ground. Honor Flight is a national organization dedicated to getting the World War II Veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their World War II Memorial on the Washington Mall. Plane loads of Veterans and ‘guardians’ [assistants to the vets] are either chartered or use substantial seating in a scheduled flight. The WW II vet pays nothing - those Veterans gave more than enough during the war. Guardians are volunteers that pay $500 for each tour for the privilege of serving the WW II vets. Vets and guardians depart before dawn and return after sunset on the same day. The vets are moving fast most of the time. Vets also see Korea, Vietnam, Iwo Jima and the new Air Force Memorials. Buses, meals, and standby medical assistance are in place to make each tour the memory second only to the war. Veterans sign up for a tour on a waiting list and are taken from the nearest hub in the order of registration received at the Honor Flight office. Guardians can sign up to help a specific Veteran or any Veteran available. There are either two or three vets per guardian. Interested WW II vets or persons wishing to be guardians should apply as soon as possible. Though flights are being developed all the time, the waiting list is about 400 right now. Pending organization of its first flight, applications can be made through La Crosse at http://www.freedomhonorflight. org/vetapp.php or Milwaukee at http://www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/ departments/Veterans/HonorsFlightProgram/Application.pdf . Guardian applications are at the same location, one link in arrears. Print out the application, fill it out and mail it in as instructed. The logistics and fund-raising missions to put the tour together are daunting. The Madison-area group took courage from two Wisconsin hubs already operating. Milwaukee calls their organization “Stars & Stripes Honor Flight” and La Crosse calls theirs “Freedom Honor Flight”. Two Madison hub names are suggested “Greatest Generation Honor Flight” and “Badger Honor Flight.” The Madison group has tentatively booked the main hall at VFW 1318 for the third Monday each month, 6:00 p.m. for the indefinite future. All are welcome to attend and participate. The Madison Hub hopes to put a plane load of vets in D.C. within a few months. For volunteer or donor information, contact Co-Chairmen Jeffrey Unger at 608-2423727 or Raymond Perez at 608-266-3916.

frank Brown scholarship Recipients
The Frank Brown Scholarship judging is completed and students have been selected for a scholarship. This year, sixty-six (66) applications were submitted. Of those 66, 4 were found to be ineligible. A panel at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, judged the remaining 62. The judges consisted of 3 graduate students working on either Masters or PhD degrees. The fourth judge is a business owner in security. They deliberated long and hard on the applications and entered written observations on all applicants. Their personal assessments varied drastically on only a few applications providing me with a solid consistency in ratings of all applications. Our 2008-2009 Frank Brown Scholarship recipients are as follows: 1. Tanner Schrank: Waupun. Hosted by William Schrank (VFW) 2. Katie Williams: DeForest. Hosted by Frances and Jean Underhill (VFW & VFWLA) 3. Courtney Omernick: West Bend. Hosted by Richard and Evelyn Steeber (VFW & VFWLA) 4.Andrew Smits: Green Bay. Hosted by Margaret Smits (VFWLA) 5. Leah Draxler: Auburndale. Hosted by Robert Draxler (VFW) 19. Kendra Heindl: Edgar. Hosted by James and Janice Heindl (VFW & VFWLA) 20. Parker Anderson: Sheboygan. Hosted by Andre Anderson (VFW) The almost 1/3 of applicants will receive a scholarship primarily from very generous donations from The Department of Wisconsin Ladies Auxiliary and a private donor, William Stiefvater. I cannot thank you enough for your most generous gifts to our VFW children. Would it not have been totally awesome to be able to grant a scholarship to all 62 eligible applicants? What a tribute that would have been to our Posts across this state. Our latest Inspector Report identified Relief Funds across the state hold upwards of over $400,000.00. I know many Posts have specific purpose for holding a rather large amount due to Adopted Units and the like. I feel almost an equal number of Posts are not quite sure how to distribute that money from their Relief Fund. You can make a donation to the Frank Brown Scholarship Fund from your Relief Fund. Please send your donations to VFW Department HQ and earmark/memo the check “Frank Brown Scholarship Fund”. Let’s see if we can grant a scholarship to every eligible applicant next year. These are OUR VFW CHILDREN who are asking for our help to get a fair start at the rest of their lives.

cholesterol lowering When statins Don’t Work
Last time I wrote about using statins for cholesterol. The reason that I wrote about statins first is that scientists are very conjeff Whittle, fident that they improve the levels of bad Md, MPH cholesterol AND reduce the risk of heart Clement J. attack and stroke. In several large studies Zablocki VA of thousands of volunteers who were given either a statin or a placebo based on a coin Medical Center flip, the people who were put in the statin group had one third fewer strokes and heart attacks. Each of these studies involved somewhat different people: With or without known heart disease; With or without diabetes; Different ages, men and women, etc. The results are pretty consistent. So, almost all experts agree that if a person has heart disease or is at significant risk for heart disease, they ought to take a statin. But some people can’t take statins because of side effects. This month, I will write a little about the benefits of diet, exercise and some of the alternative drugs. These include niacin, a group of drugs called the fibrates, a group called the bile acid binding resins, and ezetemibe (Zetia). Lastly, I will mention two alternative medicines with a proven effect on cholesterol, fish oil and red yeast rice. Niacin was the first drug proven to reduce deaths from heart attacks, at least in people who had already had one heart attack. It is still widely used. It is a B vitamin, but the doses we use for treating cholesterol are much, much higher than what occurs in your diet or in a standard vitamin pill. Side effects include a flushing sensation that comes on 15 minutes to an hour after the pill is taken. The flush can be reduced by taking niacin with food or by taking a baby aspirin just before the niacin. It also predisposes people to gout and can make blood sugar run higher. A very uncommon but more dangerous side effect is liver damage. Some of the over the counter versions of slow release niacin are particularly prone to causing this, so check with your doctor before you take niacin for your cholesterol. Gemfibrozil (Lopid) is widely used because it is easy to take and has been available as a generic for many years. Like most cholesterol-lowering drugs, it can cause liver damage, but this is very rare. It does not have a very big effect on bad cholesterol, but it does raise good cholesterol and also lowers triglycerides. Most importantly, it has been shown (in a VA-sponsored study) to reduce heart attacks in men with known heart disease who had low levels of good cholesterol. A newer cousin, fenofibrate (Tricor), seems to have an even better effect on cholesterol and triglycerides, but so far it has not been shown to prevent heart disease. Tricor is still quite expensive, since there is no generic version. The drugs called bile acid binding resins include cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol and colesevelam (Welchol) . Cholestyramine was the next drug after niacin to show a benefit in reducing heart attacks, but it is difficult to take – it is a very gritty powder that has to be mixed with liquid. You have to take it at least twice a day, and you can’t take it within an hour of when you are taking other medicines. And it frequently causes constipation. But compared to a heart attack it was not bad, and so doctors used it a lot during the 1980’s, before the statins came out. Colestipol is similar to cholestyramine. Welchol came out later and is actually much easier to take – it is a pill and causes much less constipation – but it has not caught on because it is not as effective or well studied as statins. Ezetimibe (Zetia) is the newest cholesterol-lowering drug. It is popular because it is an easy-to-take pill that has few side effects. It lowers the bad cholesterol pretty well – about 15% on average. This is nowhere near as high as the 50% - 60% drop you can get with certain statins – for example atorvastatin (Lipitor) or rosuvastatin (Crestor) – but it is significant and it seems to add to the effect of the statin. So if you drop from your bad cholesterol from 200 to 100 with Lipitor, you might be able to drop it all the way to 85 by adding ezetimibe. But there are no studies that show that ezetimibe decreases heart attacks, either alone, or when added to a statin. So most doctors don’t use it unless a person can’t tolerate the cholesterol-lowering drugs that we are pretty sure reduce heart attacks. During 2007 and 2008, there was some publicity that perhaps Zetia could cause cancer, but more recent studies seem to show that it was a false alarm. So it is probably pretty safe, but we don’t know if it is useful for reducing heart attacks. Fish oil is one of the most popular treatments for cholesterol among patients, since you can get it without a prescription, and it seems like it should be safe. A very well known study of fish oil was done in Italy about 20 years ago among men who had had a heart attack. Those who took fish oil were less likely to have another heart attack than those who did not. Because of this study, many doctors recommend fish oil to their patients with heart disease, or at risk of heart disease. However, the actual effect on cholesterol is very small, so it is not clear how fish oil works. Since the original study was done back before there were treatments for cholesterol, and even before aspirin was routinely used, it is not clear that fish oil adds anything if someone is taking the more routine treatments. The bottom line is that it might help, but we don’t know, so lots of people decide to take it. Red yeast rice is a popular herbal that does reduce bad cholesterol. It contains a chemical that is also one of the active ingredients in lovastatin, one of the prescription statins. The amount of the statin-like in red yeast rice is relatively small, but it is probably enough to explain the effect we see on cholesterol. That low dose of statin also means that some people who get muscle aches with statins can tolerate the red yeast rice. Unfortunately, since it is a food supplement it is less regulated than prescription drugs, so the amount of drug you get will probably vary from batch to batch and brand to brand.

mander and won All-American for outstanding membership recruitment. He also served as District 1 Commander, and has been Youth and Scouting Chairman for several years. The only other contested race was for State Judge Advocate. Immediate Past State Chief of Staff Bill “Knoot” Knudson became a late entry into the race when he was nominated by 7th District Commander Russ Iwen. Knudson had been planning to run for the office next year, but acquiesced when Iwen sought permission to enter his name this year. He defeated 9-term incumbent Mike Borg for the office. “I was both surprised and gratified by the outcome,” says Knudson. “I have worked with Mike for several years and have great respect for him. I believe the idea of taking a fresh look and approach to the issues appealed to the membership as we toured the caucuses. I am delighted to assume this position and honored by the confidence expressed by the members. I look forward to bringing my own style to the duties at hand. Mike and I are working well together during the transition period and we remain good friends. I know I can count on him for advice.” Knudson is a Life Member and Quartermaster of his Post 1866, Marshfield. He has served as both Post and 7th District Commander. In addition to having served as Gary Erickson’s Chief of Staff, Knudson continues as Editor of this newspaper and Administrator of Wisconsin VFW WebCOM operations. He is an Army Signal Corps Vietnam Veteran.

A 3-way race for State Junior Vice Commander among Robert Bolz, Larry Kutschma and DeWitt “Woody” Woodworth came down to a run-off between Kutschma and Woodworth when the first-round ballot failed to show a clear winner. The runoff vote went to Larry Kutschma, who was on his third try for the coveted position. “It was a good race,” Kutschma said, “and I applaud my competitors for their heartfelt campaigns. It’s always good when we have strong candidates for leadership of our great organization.” Kutschma said he is looking forward to working with the leadership team and contributing his ideas in hopes of keeping our organization strong and vital, and focused on the needs and interests of Veterans throughout our state.

Building
Continued from Page 1 August 26, 2009, to vacate the premises. In that time, we will occupy the present suite of offices on the first floor rent-free. The new owner assumed control of the building as of the closing date of June 17, 2009. The building will be completely renovated and turned into commercial rental space. The VFW Department of Wisconsin acquired the Hamilton Street property on April 1, 1974 and for many years enjoyed occupancy of the additional floors by numerous State Offices. Through the 1970’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s, State Government was expanding and was continually renting office space throughout the capitol district. After 2000, however, changes in State budgeting and consolidations caused a drop in occupancy. It became increasingly difficult to attract tenants, and our building, for all its outward appearance, simply was not competitive ward and passed a non-binding recommendation that the Council approve the purchase. One area of concern to the membership was the disposition of the new-found funds. A motion from the convention floor strongly recommended placing at least $200,000 into our Wisconsin VFW Trust Fund, which is currently in the process of becoming the Wisconsin VFW Foundation, a legal 501c(3) corporation. Once funds are placed in the Foundation, it would be extremely difficult to remove them to be spent on any given project. The Foundation would generate interest which will be distributed to the Department to use against operating expenses in the future. Many members are mindful of the manner in which previous councils of Administration had easily pulled money out of reserve funds and used it for ongoing operations. This motion also passed. (See Trust Fund article elsewhere in this edition.) Mindful of the concerns raised at Convention, the new Council of Administration listened to the proposal in its session Saturday afternoon and, after due consideration and discussion, voted to affirm the proposed purchase. The vote was 14 to 7. Subsequently, the Council also voted to require that the Building Committee, which had recommended the purchase and renovation of the property at 4622 Dutch Mill Road, Madison, return to the Council at its July 24 meeting in Wisconsin Rapids with detailed bids for the required work to convert the residential structure to functional office space. The purchase price for the new property is $149,900. The offer was subject to approval by the new Council of Administration. With that approval, closing on the purchase will take place July 20. As we go to press, plans are being prepared and the bid process is underway. When completed, the upgraded building will encompass about 750 sq/ft of office space. The location is in a commercial area which has been designated for development of various research and office facilities. It is conveniently located at the Hwy. 51 exit of the 12/18 Beltline. Initial estimates put the cost of upgrading and compliance with Madison commercial regulations at around $80,000, for a total investment of under $250,000 in a prime commercial area.
our location since 1974, 214 Hamilton street has been sold to a commercial developer. although this location provided tenant revenue for many years, for the past decade its extra space has sat vacant. Maintenance and upkeep made continued use by the VfW impractical at best. with newer, better-equipped and maintained office space. For most of the past decade, our 2nd and 3rd floor space sat vacant. Heating, cooling and maintenance costs for this large building became burdensome. As a result, it was increasingly obvious that the time had come to shed this building and move to smaller, more efficient quarters. With the sale completed and announced in detail at Convention, the membership took up discussion of future plans. Sr Vice Commander Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson reported on a proposal to purchase a new, smaller building on Madison’s southeast side. The new Council of Administration, he said, would be considering the proposed purchase at its organizational C of A immediately following installation. The proposal generated considerable discussion. Some Convention delegates expressed caution about moving ahead with any other purchase, many recommending that the Department lease space temporarily before settling on a specific property. In the end, however, the convention put for-

Brent Anderson, of Anderson Construction, provided working space at his Amery business, Anderson Construction, and then transported it to the Handy’s Centuria home for final assembly and installation. Several local VFW Posts and Ladies Auxiliaries donated time and money to complete this critical project. Currently, the same group of volunteers has enough material to construct a second handicappedaccess ramp for another Polk County family as well. That project is underway. It’s good to see the true spirit of the VFW and their Ladies Auxiliaries benefitting folks here at home and, by extension, supporting their troops overseas.

A National citation from the National President of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Dixie Hild, was awarded to Cadet-TSGT Jerod Meyer, of the COLSAC Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, for his outstanding support of our troops at the send-off for Post 987’s Adopt-a-Unit, Delta Company. Jerod worked to assist in serving over 500 soldiers and family members at the Unit’s Armory luncheon, and helped in both set-up and clean-up. He participated as a Color Guard at the Unit’s Send-Off Ceremony during “Presenting and Retiring of the Colors.” He worked hard with his Squadron during the Sauk County flood-relief effort, June 2008. He continually excels in progressing through the CAP Cadet Program, by helping to train Junior Cadets. He is 16 and will be a Junior at SaukPrairie High School.

Dane County Dedicates memorial
It began in 1985 as just an idea: Build a Veterans Memorial for Dane County. Mother and daughter Betty and Tami Rotar thought that Dane County needed something special to memorialize all those residents who had served in all branches of the United States Military. A Memorial that those who had served, or those who survived them, could put their name on. It would thus also honor those killed in action or still among the missing. With some help from Bob Rieser, a design for the Dane County Veterans Memorial was born. The 24 long years from 1985 to the Memorial’s Dedication Ceremony on May 23, 2009, comprised a path filled with challenges and difficulties, a few bumps along the way, but culminating in a spectacular day and the unveiling of a dramatically unique Memorial. The Memorial itself is a sight to behold. Carved of Rushmore granite, the focal point of the Memorial is the largest freestanding

Construction began in earnest in 2006 with the delivery of the granite, and the brick walkway and 3 flag poles were installed. 2007 saw the installation of the stainless steel railings, and in 2008 the KIA/ MIA panels with the names of 540 Dane County Residents were set into place. trust funD Challenge
Vfw trust fund Challenge
The VFW Trust Fund recently had a very successful State Convention. Patrick Nowlin handed over a $5,000 matching funds donation check for last year’s challenge. Frank Brown donated $1,000 to help meet the challenge for next year, when Patrick Nowlin extended his matching funds challenge of $5,000 for next year. The Trust Fund raised close to $1,000 at the Convention selling coins and pins and running a very successful silent auction. So let me repeat, Patrick Nowlin from the Stoughton VFW Post 328 issued a challenge to all VFW members and Posts; he will match all donations to the Trust Fund up to a $5,000 limit for the upcoming year. Thank you to all of the Posts and individuals that donated this last year. Certificates were handed out to the District Commanders during the Convention; they should have them for your next District Meeting. Make your personal contribution and encourage your Post to make a donation. This is for the future of the VFW. Only the interest is spent, the principle remains intact, so your contribution basically lasts forever to assist Veterans, Military

personnel, their families, and VFW programs. If each member would donate $20, we could raise $800,000 and then this would fund our vital programs in Perpetuity. Challenge coins will be given for donation of $50 and above, and pins are for sale and are also used to build the Trust Fund. Our Trust Fund started in 2000, slowly grew the first few years, and has now doubled each of the last 2 years. A VFW Trust Fund policy has been approved. A PowerPoint presentation is being developed to show potential donors what the VFW is all about. We are in the process of setting up a standalone Wisconsin VFW Foundation Inc. The Foundation is now incorporated in the State of Wisconsin and has an Employer Federal ID number. The paperwork to establish a
Wisconsin VFW Foundation as a 501c3 corporation is being filled out and we will hopefully adopt Foundation Bylaws at the upcoming Council Meeting. This is a very worthwhile and important program, and I believe the future of VFW - Department of Wisconsin is tied to the health of the Trust Fund. “It is the mission of the Wisconsin VFW Trust Fund to help fulfill America’s promise to its Military Personnel and Veterans. We want to aid Wisconsin’s Veterans and their families in their time of need, through support of Wisconsin’s Veterans Homes, Wisconsin’s VA Medical Centers, Wisconsin’s Veterans Cemeteries, the Wisconsin residence at the VFW National Home and other worthy entities. We want to support Military Personnel and their families in their time of need. Also to support VFW programs to foster patriotism and scholarship among Wisconsin’s youth.” All contributions are taxdeductible. Thanks for all of your support this last year. Thanks in advance for the support that you and your Posts will provide in the next year.
Patrick nowlin, life member of Stoughton Post 328, makes good on his matching pledge of $5,000 as he hands his personal check to PSC bill Hustad, wisconsin vfw trust fund Chairman. true to his word, Pat nowlin believes in the idea of salting away an ongoing fund that will provide financial security to our Department well into the future. Vfw gift CarDs
Do you go grocery shopping every week? Do you get gas for your vehicle every week? Do you go out to eat? Usually we pay by check, cash, or credit/debit card. There is another way that you can pay and that is by getting gift cards. The VFW Gift Card Store program allows our members, family members and VFW supporters to raise money for our State and Post simply by buying items we use every day. To raise money, just purchase gift cards through their website or over the phone and instead of using cash, use the gift cards. Each gift card purchased through the VFW Gift Card Store earns a donation to your VFW Post. When a gift card is purchased through this program the merchant that issues the gift cards provides a donation. • VFW Gift Card Store gift cards are the same as those sold in stores, except each card purchased earns a donation • Gift cards are sold at face value • There are no hidden fees • All purchases are made via check or electronic check withdrawal. (Bank account information is not retained as part of the security measures). • All orders are delivered directly to the purchaser’s home within 7-10 days. Of the total dollars raised through purchase of gift cards, 50% will go to the individual Post that you designate and 50% will go to Department of Wisconsin. Personally I have purchased Copps

There are five easy ways to order gift cards through the VFW Gift Card Store. • Online www.vfwgiftcards.com 800-514-1891 Monday thru Friday 8:30 – 4:00 CST • Phone • Fax 608-821-1025 • Mail P O Box 628458, Middleton, WI 53562 • Auto-Order Recurring monthly order option.
(Pick n Save), WalMart, and Kwik Trip gift cards among others. I go on line and looked through their selection of businesses (and they have too many to list) who are participating. I have had no trouble using any gift cards I have purchased. There are no additional charges. I was charged the value of the gift card. How much the Post receives depends on the gift cards you purchase. Donations are based on percentages and they range anywhere from 1% to 15% of the value of the gift card. Both Copps and Kwik Trip $100 gift cards amount to a $3.00 donation as they donate 3%. This may not seem like a lot. But stop and think if you spend $100 a week or more for a family on groceries and multiply that by 52 weeks, through your purchase the VFW would receive $156.00 per year. If every member did this, just think about how much money we can raise. The VFW Gift Card Store sells gift cards for athletics/sports stores, gas stations, grocery stores, home improvement stores, office stores, pharmacy, restaurants, retail stores, toy stores, entertainment (such as movie theaters), some hotels. As you can see, they have a variety to choose from. Another method that has been tried is to have the Post distribute an order form with the common gift card listed and have members order just like Girl Scout cookies and then collect the money and distribute the gift cards at the next meeting. At the State Convention, I distributed lots of these order forms that you can use to take orders for gift cards from your members at your monthly meetings. Then call the order in and explain you did it on a meeting night and will not collect until the next meeting. They will then expect payment for the cards after your next meeting. Once your members get use to it, then maybe they will order direct or pay in advance for the cards. We are getting more Posts to participate, thus money to your Post and also to Department of Wisconsin VFW. My VFW Post 10549 has received almost $200 from the program in less than one year in the program. We now use the order form to let members order gift cards at the Post meeting and then get the card and pay for it at the next Post meeting. I think our Post will exceed $300 from the program next year, and our Post is only 120 members and we have only 5 members participating. Remember, non-members can also participate. Look them up on the web. If you do not have a computer, call them and they will send you an order form and a list of businesses to choose from. See attached for the order form distributed at State Convention. If you have any questions on the program, please call me: William Hustad VFW Gift Card Program 608-527-2942 Wfhus1@tds.net

iwo jima monument
iwo jima monument to be Dedicated at the wisconsin Concrete Park
Many travelers to northern Wisconsin discover a hidden gem on Highway 13, south of Phillips: The Wisconsin Concrete Park. An open air museum of concrete sculptures built by Fred Smith, the Park is not to be missed as you make your way to points north. Fred Smith was born in 1886, and after many years of farming and hard work in the woods, retired in 1948. Teaching himself how to build sculptures at the age of 63, Smith created over 200 statues on the farm surrounding his home and other buildings. He claimed he built the Park as a gift for all American people, but it is known internationally as well, welcoming visitors from all over the world. Fred’s words to live by: “It’s gotta be in ya to do it.” Sounds like fitting guidance for any of us! The Park’s unique sculptures are life-size or larger, depicting a wide range of historic figures and events, animals and more. Made predominately of cement, wire, broken colored glass, china, and reflectors, many also include actual implement parts and other items. All of the statues are labeled with large, lettered signs, a real feat considering that Smith never learned to read or write. He narrated the words to a friend who would write them out, but often the letters ran together in odd sequence, due to Smith’s lack of experience in writing words. One of the Concrete Park’s highlights is the tribute to the Marines raising Old Glory on Iwo Jima, made famous by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. In Rosenthal’s well-known picture, taken on February 23, 1945, four Marines unite to raise the American Flag on Mount Suribachi, after the American forces captured the Japanese island. Smith’s concrete tribute is very well executed, but was badly in need of restoration work which began last summer. Repair of the

Vfw Post 1230 receives rare historical recognition
Dorothy Weyer’s involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wolf Olson Post 1230 in Sheboygan dates back to 1945, right after her late husband, Robert Weyer, returned from the South Pacific at the end of World War II. After more than six decades of VFW fish fries, parades and activities designed to honor and assist Veterans, the 90-year-old says December 20, 2008 was one of the most memorable days of all since she joined the organization. That’s because the Post’s Hall on Union Avenue received a historical marker from the Wisconsin Historical Society honoring the VFW Post’s 84 years history of serving Veterans in Sheboygan County. It’s believed to be the first VFW Hall in the State of Wisconsin to receive that distinction and to longtime members like Dorothy Weyer, the hall has certainly earned it. Whatever Veterans have needed, the Post has provided it, she said. “It’s a great organization.” Richard Bernstein, Field Representative for the Wisconsin Historical Society, said the plaque joins more than 520 Historical Markers erected in the State since the marker program began in 1951. The plaque is meant to help bring people’s understanding of history directly to the location where history was made, said Richard Bernstein. The Wolf Olson Post is the third oldest VFW in the State and the hall itself is among the State’s longest running VFW locations. Members began meeting there in 1924 when it was still the South West Home for Funerals. They purchased the building in 1940. The Post is named after World War I Veteran Lt. August Wolf and Lt. Herman Olson, a Veteran of the Spanish-American War. Both men were from Sheboygan. Today the post has 165 members; about 20 are currently serving in Iraq. Every year, Post members give back to the community through Scholarships, Winter Coat Drives and by volunteering at local Nursing Homes. Post Commander and Past State Commander Jerry Wenninger, a Vietnam Veteran, said he hopes the Historical Marker makes people more aware of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its importance to the community. “This Post has been so attached to the community,” he said, “That is what makes it so outstanding.”
letters at the top of the monument, as well as repainting with colors based on vintage documentation and recreation of the original hill Smith built behind the monument are just some aspects of the restoration project. In addition to a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, numerous Veterans groups, area organizations, businesses and individuals from throughout Price County and beyond have provided the financial support for the restoration. We salute them for their generosity and foresight! The official dedication of the Iwo Jima Concrete Monument is slated for Saturday, August 8,
2009, commencing at 12 noon. Numerous activities for the family are scheduled, including guided tours, and the dedication will take place at 1 p.m. Area artists will hold an arts and crafts sale and a concession stand will be available. All Veterans, their families and the general public are cordially invited to attend. For more information about Fred Smith, the Wisconsin Concrete Park and the events on August 8, please visit www. friendsoffredsmith.org. This column is usually a place noteS fRom where your editor is free to take a flight of whimsy, perhaps do a little tongue-in-cheek humor or print the occasional apology. This time, it’s different. As we were frantically put- The Editor’s Corner ting the current edition “to bed,” word came of the loss of one of the Wisconsin VFW’s most unique and dedicated members. Ken Munro, who led by example and pitched-in and did whatever it took to serve Veterans, lost his toughest battle in the early-morning hours of Sunday, July 12. He had been stricken with cancer, and as he, himself, joked not much more than a year ago, he just never did anything “half-way.” He had somehow managed to leapfrog the whole shebang and was toe-to-toe with the “stage four” variety, which is about as bad as it can get. But with that patented Ken Munro smile, he said simply, “but we’ll beat it.” And beat it, he did, for a while. The occasion on which we had this little aside was his last meeting as Chairman of the annual King Day Committee. It was a meeting focused on planning, but Ken’s agenda included passing along the information his successors, Dick Morey and John Zouski, would need to know. It was interesting, and inspiring, to watch Ken at work… bringing up a myriad of little details that he didn’t want overlooked. “I’ll stay involved as much as I can,” he said, “But I know I’m gonna have other stuff to deal with for awhile.” Later, at King Day, Ken was surprised with two special awards recognizing his selfless dedication to service, especially his 16-year run as King Day Chairman. He was not an “awards seeking” kind of a guy. Ken was a do-er. Throughout his VFW career, he had taken on assignments and proved himself as a leader. He was a Post Commander, District Commander and State Chief of Staff, held numerous National appointments, but never sought higher office. Perhaps his proudest role was as a member of our award-winning State Honor Guard. He loved the ceremony of it, the camaraderie and the teamwork. He excelled, and I think enjoyed being a part of the whole. Ken had a great sense of humor. He could put his hand on your shoulder, fix you with a stern look emanating from that weathered face and practically bark at you. And then bust the spell with a grin and a chuckle. He could be, at once, serious and light-hearted. He expressed appreciation to those who helped get the job done. When I got the word of his passing that morning, I searched in vain for photos of Ken Munro. The only ones I found were from the presentation last King Day. How characteristic of Kenny: He never made it about himself. He was there to do a job for his comrades. He never sought the limelight. Kenny loved to fish. We don’t know how much fishing he got done in his short retirement, but we’re willing to bet that if, somewhere in the great beyond there’s a place to fish, he’s fishin’ right now. (And if he has anything to say about it, he’ll make sure his beloved King Day will continue his unbroken streak of great weather days!) So long, Kenny. And thanks for everything.

it was a great Convention!
The 88th Annual VFW and 84th Annual Ladies Auxiliary Department Conventions took place at the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Eau Claire. From all reports and many comments, this was among the best Conventions we have experienced in a long time. State Commander Erickson and Department Auxiliary President Morgan are to be commended on running well-organized, well-paced meetings that both informed and entertained the delegates. The mood on both Convention floors was upbeat and positive, and there were many “first-timers” present who were excited and encouraged by the general mood and style of the Convention. While there were tough issues discussed on the Convention floors, delegates stayed engaged and put forth good motions and suggestions. Our Joint Awards Program was excellent, and many individuals were properly honored and thanked. The Wednesday evening Patriotic Rally was a smash success, and attendees included local residents who joined in the celebration of America. Post 305 (Eau Claire) Commander Richard Freitag delivered a wonderfully evocative speech with a surprise twist at the end that brought tears
