      AT WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

      WPI CAMPUS CENTER, ODEUM
            MARCH 24, 2010
It is one of the most beautiful

  compensations of this life that

no man can sincerely try to help

another without helping himself.…

Serve and thou shall be served.

       Ralph Waldo Emerson
SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1865, WPI has been the grateful
beneficiary of many extraordinary acts of generosity, beginning with
the gift of John Boynton. This successful tinware manufacturer gave his
life’s savings of $100,000 to found the university.
Through the years, Boynton’s gift has inspired hundreds of others
who have believed in his vision. Many of those donors have chosen to
help young men and women attend WPI by creating scholarship funds
to support qualified students. To date, they have provided WPI with
scholarship endowments totaling over $85.8 million. These 370 separately
named funds generated over $5.6 million in aid this year for more than
950 awards, augmenting the $36 million WPI spends on financial aid
from its own operating funds.
Considering that about 90 percent of our 3,400 undergraduates
now require some form of aid (including student loans), it is clear that
these endowed scholarships play a vital role in keeping our doors open to all
qualified students.

THIS EVENING IS DEDICATED to two groups of honored guests.
First, we celebrate those who have established scholarships at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute. Through your generosity and vision, you helped
give the gift of a WPI education to generations of young men and
women. Your scholarships yield immeasurable returns, ones that
continuously unfold across the WPI campus and beyond our university’s
borders, as the recipients go on to lives of leadership, achievement, and
fulfillment. Second, we welcome the outstanding students who benefit
from this remarkable philanthropy. We hope that this special gathering
of givers and receivers will inspire new and lasting friendships among
those who know and love WPI.
