     SWAP South A
     Volunteer
SWAP offers a three-month Volunteer or a one-year Working Holiday program. With both programs, you will begin your adven-
ture in spectacular Cape Town with a seven-day orientation. This will introduce you to South Africa’s multicultural society and it’s
abundance of languages, climate and wildlife.

Registrations for the Volunteer South Africa program are processed at SWAP head office and are not accepted at Travel CUTS/
Voyages Campus offices. Please note that there are fixed departure dates for both the Work and Volunteer South Africa programs.

Jodi Grobbecker enjoyed spending time with her students and learning about their culture.
HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR TIME IN SOUTH AFRICA? I participated in the volunteer program just outside of Cape Town in a township
called Langa. I volunteered in a primary school where I taught English and math and started a sports class. I didn’t have any previous
experience in teaching what so ever so it was definitely an eye opener

HOW DID YOU LIKE YOUR SWAP SOUTH AFRICA VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT? My placement time in South Africa was life changing, the
children at the school were incredible, they have a totally different culture/life than us and have the biggest smiles! Whether it was a
soccer ball, loaf of bread, or welcoming a new person, it would all cause such excitement for their day.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF YOUR SWAP VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE? The best part of my experience was the feeling I got knowing I
had helped someone change their life just a little bit. Volunteering in a primary school was the best thing I could have chosen. I’ve learned
so much about life in Africa as well as about myself.

                                         FROM: Toronto, Ontario
SCHOOL: York University at Glendon College, and Humber College
SWAP PROGRAM? SWAP Work South Africa
WHY SWAP? I had always planned on going on an extended overseas jaunt once
I’d finished school. I had also always planned on working while I was away – I like
the idea of being able to stay for a longer time in a city of my choice, as a resident
getting to know the people and the environment of a foreign city and culture
rather than as a passing traveller. The SA program was, in my opinion, the farthest
away and most exotic choice SWAP offered and, in the end, SWAP’s services
helping to get a working visa in the country sold me on their program. I wanted
to go to Africa anyway and to work there seemed like a pretty rare and exciting
opportunity so I signed up with SWAP and I chose the SA program.
MUST DO’S: Go to Kruger Park, climb Table Mountain, rent a car and drive along the coast from Cape Town to Johannesburg,
stop in Oudtshorn and ride ostriches through the wilderness and stay in the hostel at the top of a giant hill. Go to Zimbabwe –
    Victoria Falls and beyond!
TYPE OF JOB & PAY: I worked full time in a hostel in Cape Town and made R17/hr. I worked part-time as an assistant and
    made R20/hr.
JOB HUNTING TIME: I found the hostel job immediately. The admin job came about two weeks later.
ACCOMMODATION: I stayed in a hostel for a few weeks. Later, I moved into a flat and shared it with a South African writer.
    It was great!
RENT: R2,000/month. It was right on Long Street in an amazing flat.
