National Emergency Fund
Since The American Legion was founded in 1919 we have been actively
involved in meeting the needs of both the community and American Legion
family members. In the ’20s, The American Legion entered into an agreement
with The American National Red Cross, later called The American Red Cross, to
assist them in disaster relief and fund raising.
The program became known as The American Legion’s Disaster Relief
Program and worked in conjunction with The Red Cross for about 50 years. Over
that time, The American Legion, through its many local posts, assisted our
Nation’s residents with housing assistance, food, supplies and cleanup after a
number of major disasters. The American Legion also raised well over $500,000
for The American Red Cross.
After Hurricane Hugo struck Florida in 1989, in order to better assist
American Legion family members and posts, the National Executive Committee
created what we know as the National Emergency Fund (NEF). The NEF exists to
assist American Legion family members with immediate monetary assistance up
to $1,500, and up to

Housing for Homeless
Veterans Corp.
Today young men and woman continue fighting the War on Terrorism. Some of these veterans
will fall in to a life of homelessness. There are still veterans from previous wars that are becoming
homeless, while others to remain homeless. Would you like to help a veteran have a second
chance on life?
The Pennsylvania American Legion started a non-profit organization to help address the homeless veterans problem through
transitional housing, helping to secure a better job and going back to school. Our program is designed to enhance the quality of life
for the veteran and their children. It is designed to help them become productive tax paying citizens again by securing a good, decent
job.
Over the past 19 years, we have had over 655 veterans go through our program with an 85% success rate. Our homes are located
in Moon Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Ephrata, Pennsylvania. We have a full-time director to help in achieving
our vision of giving every homeless veteran a second chance at the American dream.
In order for The American Legion to finance this program, we are asking for your support. We will be sponsoring a dinner on
January 9, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport, Moon Township. There will be a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. with dinner
following at 7:00 p.m. Dinner tickets are $25 per person and include a program book. Ads can be placed in the program book at the
following prices:
Full Page $70 (of which $50 can be used for a tax write off)
½ Page $50 (of which $30 can be used for a tax write off)
¼ Page $40 (of which $21 can be used for a tax write off)
Please make checks for dinner tickets and ads payable to: PA American Legion Housing for Homeless. Mail to: Ron Conley, 709
Hope Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.
The remodeling and upkeep of these homes is the responsibility of The American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans Corp.
We need your support!
Fisher House
A Fisher House is a “home away from home,” dedicated to our greatest national
treasure…our military service men and women and their loved ones.
A family’s love is always the best medicine. When a loved one is injured or ill, a
Fisher House unites families and relieves the financial and emotional strain of
being away from home. Fisher Houses also provide an outlet for families to find
support and encouragement from others in similar circumstances. Too often
families incur significant expense and unnecessary hardship in their efforts to rally
round a loved one in time of need. The Fisher House Foundation is committed to
projects that improve the quality of life for service members and their families.
WHAT IS A FISHER HOUSE?
The typical Fisher House has eight to twenty-one suites, with a first floor that is
designed for handicapped access. The houses can accommodate 16 to 42 family
members. They feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining
room, complete with fireplace, library, and toys for children. A Fisher House is a
temporary residence and is not a treatment facility, hospice or counseling center.
Fisher Houses have served more than 8,000 families and saved families more than
$7 million in lodging costs, plus food and transportation:
Fisher House
HOW IS A FISHER HOUSE PAID FOR?
Fisher House Foundation pays the cost of construction and furnishings for each Fisher House, and the Foundation will have
the money on hand before construction begins. So they may conserve funds to build more houses, they ask if half the money
for a new house can be raised in the local area, and then do a one-for-one match. Fisher Houses are given to the US
Government as gifts, but houses located at VA medical centers do receive support from tax dollars. As verified by their most
recent audit and tax return, only 3% of expenditures are for administration or fundraising.
WHO GETS TO STAY IN A FISHER HOUSE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
As of October 1, 2006 there is no cost to any family to stay at any Fisher House. Families of active duty military members
and veterans who are undergoing life-saving care at military or veterans’ hospitals can stay at a Fisher House to be near their
loved ones. Veterans/military who must receive recurring care can also stay with their families at the Fisher House.
WHY DOES THE VA PITTSBURGH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM NEED A FISHER HOUSE?
Numerous veterans have to travel across the state, and even across the country, to receive some of the specialized services
provided at VAPHS, such as transplants and oncology treatment. The ability to bring their family with them for support and to
have them nearby during procedures and care is a challenge that countless numbers of these veterans face. A Fisher House is
the solution to this obstacle.
HOW CAN I MAKE A DONATION?
Any interest in assisting the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System in beginning the process in building a Fisher House for the
loved ones of veterans being treated there is greatly appreciated.
Please specify when making a donation that you would like it to be used for the Fisher House at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare
System.
Online donations or forms for faxing or mailing donations can be downloaded at www.fisher house.org/contribute

Life Line Screening
The American Legion and Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, believe
in the power of prevention. That’s why we’ve partnered together to offer our members these screenings at a discount not available to the
public. In less than an hour, you can be screened with painless, non-invasive, advanced ultrasound technology for stroke and other
disease prevention in the convenience and comfort of your own community. The screenings are performed by highly qualified and skilled
technologists and reviewed by a board-certified physician. You’ll receive a confidential written report within 21 days and are encouraged
to share the results with your doctor. Prevention is empowering, and may even be life-saving. To help you take control of your health, Life
Line Screening offers the following screenings:
1. Stroke / Carotid Artery Screening: Strokes are most commonly related to plaque build-up in the carotid artery. This ultrasound test is
performed by applying gel and a transducer along your neck to view the carotid arteries for blockage.
2. Atrial Fibrillation: A ECG device is used to determine whether or not you have Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB), or an irregular heartbeat. Adults
over 40 have a 1 in 4 chance of developing AFIB in their lifetime. A diagnosis of AFIB mans that your risk for stroke increas es five-fold.
3. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening: An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a “ballooning” of the wall in the abdominal aorta. The
majority of people with AAAs have no symptoms. If an AAA ruptures, the mortality rate is 80-90 percent. More than 15,000 U.S. residents
per year die of AAAs. The good news is that AAAs can be identified via an ultrasound screening.
4. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening: Eight to twelve million Americans suffer from PAD. It is 4-5 times more likely that you will
die from heart disease if you have PAD. Ultrasound technology is used to screen for PAD (plaque buildup in the arms and legs) .
