                               Research Subcommittee
                           Wednesday, November 30, 2005
                Under Research & Technology Block -10:30am –6:00pm
                      Chair: Patrick Muessig, Azon, USA, Inc.

1. The chair called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m.

2. The chair appointed Deb Callahan (staff) recording secretary

3. Minutes from the July 2005 (Quebec City) meeting were approved by general
   consent.

4. The agenda was reviewed and approved by general consent.

5. Research Reports were provided as follows:
           a) Effect of Surface Heat Transfer Coefficients on U-Factors for Projecting and
               Highly Conductive Products: Final Report from Charlie Curcija - PMTG (Tom
               Culp, Chair).) On Agenda until ASHRAE Paper is submitted (Pay final 10%) It
               was recommended that the final 10% will be paid upon staff confirmation of
               submission.
           b) 3D Heat Transfer Effects in Fenestration Products: Final Report from Charlie
               Curcija -PMTG (Jeff Baker, Chair). ) On Agenda until ASHRAE Paper is
               submitted (Pay final 10%) It was recommendation that the final 10% will be paid
               upon staff confirmation of submission.
           c) U-factor Rating of Domed Skylights. Report from PMTG (Roland Temple,
               Chair). Report provided by M. Stocki. It was noted that the project is currently
               on schedule. Dave De Block was named as new project chair. Willie duPont and
               Peter Lyons were named to serve on review group.
           d) Thermal Comfort Rating. Final Report from PMTG (John Hogan, Chair). Report
               provided by M. Stocki. It was noted that the project is currently on schedule.
           e) Investigation of Heat Transfer Effects of Sloped and Ventilated Internal Cavities
               of Framing Systems. Report from PMTG (Sam Yuan, Chair). Report provided by
               C. Huizenga. Project is in draft final report phase with final report due by end of
               the year. It was note that the report will be posted on the NFRC Website.
               Members were requested to get comments to C. Huizenga by 1/15/05.
           f) U-factor Rating of Tubular Daylighting Devices. Report from PMTG (Dave De
               Block, chair)
                          Task group meeting prior to RSC final approval of report D. De
                           Block reported. It was noted that a final report will be completed by
                           the next meeting.
                          D. De Block presented unsolicited summary page for new research.

                     Motion – Motion to accept the summary page (to simulate TDD for U
                     factor and compare to ATI test data) to be developed into an unsolicited
                     proposal that would be submit to this subcommittee for consideration at
                     the next meeting.

                     Vote: 15, 1, 7   Motion passes.
          g) NFRC 100 & 102 U-factor Standardization Draft RFP. Presentation by Willie
             duPont. W. DuPont will submit unsolicited bid of $22,000 to do this work sixty
             days before next meeting in March 06.
          h) Condensation Research Draft RFP. Presentation by Jeff Baker.
                    Formation of BRTG. Report presented by Jeff Franson. It was noted
                     that the RFP is being drafted.
          i) Entrance Door Systems Labeling. Final Report from PMTG (Dave Deblock,
             Chair) S. Reilly presented current findings.
             (a) Motion- Motion that the PMTG Door Labeling final report is complete and
                 bill should be paid. Door Task Group will make ballotable changes to door
                 panel and lite sizes in NFRC documents. A recommendation to collect
                 component lite and slab data should be added to data base development.

                     Vote: Passed by unanimous voice vote.
          j) Metering Chamber Calibration with CTS Panels Research Project. (Sam Yuan &
             Willie DuPont, co-Chair) Willie DuPont reported no progress. This PMTG will
             conduct a conference call on 12/15 and may change scope of work.
          k) Long Range Research Planning. Report from Task Group (Rich Biscoe, Chair)
             Patrick Muessig reported on items k,l,m.
          l) Research Manual Review Task Group. Report from Task Group (Rich Biscoe,
             Chair). It was noted that 2005 revisions are being made, and that the focus is on
             expedited procedures.
          m) Research Funding Task Group. Report from Task Group (Steve Strawn, Chair).
             No action reported.
6. Unfinished Business
          a) Development of Condensation Resistance Procedure for the Non-
             Residential Component Modeling Approach. Draft RFP (Charlie Curcija)
             The draft summary page was presented by Mahabir Bhandari. The chair
             requested that staff work to post this on NFRC Website so it can be
             reviewed. A ballot will be prepared for the next meeting.
          b) Development of Non-Residential Window Specific Frame Grouping
             Rules. Draft Summary page (Charlie Curcija) The draft summary page
             was presented by Mahabir Bhandari. P. Muessig recommended that staff

               post the summary page on NFRC Website for review. Ballot will then be
               released in advance of next meeting.
            c) IGMA/NFRC Gas Retention Study Update – Bill Lingnell Findings
               presented by Margaret Webb. It was noted that an RFP on permeability
               will be released in March.
            d) Development of Internal Surface Convection Correlations for Energy and
               Load Calculation Methods – Draft RFP – ASHRAE co-funded (Dan
               Fisher & Brian Crooks) No progress was reported at this time. P.
               Muessig recommended that the draft summary page be kept on agenda for
               next meeting in San Diego.
            e) Review of the financial status of the research budget- The chair provided
               review of budget figures.

7.   New Business:

     a) Skylight Product Ratings for Energy Performance and Indoor Environment
        Quality - Summary Page - Dr. Abdelaziz (Aziz) Laouadi    Presented by Dr.
        Laouadi.

        i) Motion for the approval of summary page (primarily a presentation) entitled
           Skylight Product Ratings for Energy Performance and Indoor Environment
           Quality without reference to “Skyvision” in the objectives and background.

            (1) M/S: W. DuPont, Mahabir Bhandari: Vote: Motion passed by unanimous
                voice vote.

     b) Rich Biscoe volunteered to serve as vice chair of research subcommittee.
