    Problem Statement




Student desks at Bartlett High
School do not have storage for
        student desks
Solution #1
                   Solution #1 Criteria
Function: This solution is created for holding a backpack on a combination student desk/chair
by using a hook on the underneath right side of the desk and a counterweight on the left side of
the desk
Form: The hook will be about 2” to 3” tall and about 1.5” to 2” in its horizontal direction. This will
be screwed into the underneath right side of the desk. The counterweight will be around 1’ by 4”
to 5” and will be screwed into the underneath left side of the desk
Ergonomics: This device will be user friendly because the only thing needed for it to be
functioning is having a backpack or bag hooked on over the hook. It is a very simple and non
obstructive design
Aesthetics: This device will look attractive in a sense that it will be out of the way, and
appealing to the average student. Since it is located under the desk, it won’t be seen as easily.
This will also keep it from obstructing the aisles or having its backpack or bag do the same
Ease of Maintenance: This product should be easy to maintain. Based on the simplicity of the
design, there shouldn’t be any parts breaking off, and it should last for a long time. Even if one
part were to break off, it would be very simple to just attach a new one in its place.
Standardization: As listed before, this will be a very simple solution involving only 2 parts (with
their attachments) so this will be very easy to both mass produce, and to attach on to every old
and new student desk.
Durability: This product should hold up very well considering that it will only be one hook that is
firmly attached into the bottom of a desk. Also, it is out of the way, so it won’t be bashed up
against other desks or moving people. The counterweight will have no pressure against it
except for gravity, but this too is out of the way completely and securely fastened.
Cost: The major plus of this design is that due to its low number of pieces and its great ability to
be mass produced, this product can be ordered in bulk and be assembled on the desks with
very little cost. This will be a cheap yet efficient design.
Solution #2
                         Solution #2 Criteria

Function: This solution will consist primarily of a detachable hook which students can place their backpacks on

will enable it to slide right onto the desk top and attach

immense amount of testing different weights.

Solution #3
                         Solution #3 Criteria
•   Function: The hook device will support a hung backpack, lifting the bag off of the floor and clearing floor
    space for walking
•   Form: The device will be small and compact, taking up as little space on the desk as possible. This design
    is in keeping with the goal of the project, which is to minimize the space taken up by backpacks in the
    aisles of classrooms, making it easier to maneuver through them.
•   Ergonomics: The device will be very simple, making it easy to use. Backpacks are simply hung from one
    or both of the hooks on the device, elevating bags while keeping them closer to the student.
•   Aesthetics: The simplistic design will be appealing to the eye while also being very practical.
•   Ease of Maintenance: This device will be very easy to manufacture, as it consists solely of durable plate
    metal formed into two hooks at the end. Scrap material from the manufacture of this product can easily be
    re-used to create more of the device. On a large scale, production of this solution would involve a stamping
    machine, a bender and some kind of curing process to provide structural strength. We could also easily
    make this product with tools currently at our disposal.
•   Standardization: Because this product would be made out of a single material, it would be very easy to
    build it from easily obtainable materials.
•   Durability: A very limited area of the product will be exposed, and the part that is will be small enough and
    made from a material strong enough to withstand repeated stress. Therefore, the product might have a
    relatively long life-span, or an age of obsolescence of around ten years.
•   Cost: Once again, this product would be built out of a single, readily available material. For us, this would
    be very inexpensive. On a large scale, the most expensive aspect would be the curing process to ensure
    maximum durability.
