Phone lines down, power cuts, equipment blown not to mention flooded houses and roads. Well that’s what Charles tells me, while you were all suffering I was attending my Nephew’s wedding in Prague, (what a beautiful city), and missed all the “fun”, I must ring and thank him for his timing. Anyway the weather can’t stop us and we have quite a few events coming up during October starting with the show at the Casino on the 8th, and we are looking forward to the monthly lunch in Soller. There is also the SSAFA Big Brew Up 2009 on Wednesday 7th not an ESRA event but we have included the details in the newsletter as it is such a good cause. Have a great month and I look forward to seeing you at some of the events. PRESIDENTS LETTER PRESIDENT’S LETTER. ESRA CHRISTMAS IN PALMANOVA, yes not Magaluf. The hotel we had booked for the annual Christmas holiday is closing, as are most of the hotels on the Island and as told to us by the President of the Calvia Hotel Association. He has been very helpful and we have booked fifty rooms, being held ´til Sept. 30 th, at the Cala Blanca Hotel, a very lovely property. The cost will be more than usual, but well worth it, (see detail shortly), and it is important to book quickly. The reservations of those who have already booked will be held until you notify us otherwise. I cannot stress enough how fortunate we are to have secured this booking with the aid of Jackie Evans and Rosemary Bull; these are difficult times and what little is available will be snapped up by Christmas visitors. Another sign of the times, British Midland will cease flying from London Heathrow to Mallorca the first week in November. They may also be ceasing all flights from the UK – I will know within a week. EasyJet will no longer fly out of East Midlands and is cutting back flights by 20%. We should expect higher fares and less availability. Surname and membership number, all you need to access the Members side of ESRA internet site. This new simpler method of accessing the site will be effective OCTOBER 5 th. Remember, surname and membership number only. Our internet site has been expanded to include more subjects/pages. There are now pages for Recipes, Gardening, Newsletters, Member Support, Fun and Games, News and Publicity and by Oct 5 th. ¨Year Book,¨in addition to the Events Calendar. A number of different members are contributing to these pages and if you would like to be one of them, please, give me a call. Don’t miss the chance to see the great show ¨Come Fly with Me¨, on October 8th. See details in this newsletter; a great show at a great price, transportation included. These are difficult economic times and we should probably expect some changes to our life style on this lovely island – still, I think, the best place to live. By the way grocery stores and supermarkets are starting to stop using plastic bags for purchases, this means they will soon become collectors items – what an investment opportunity! Michael Booker 3 SSAFA BIG BREW UP 2009 On Wednesday 7th October at the Mallorca Cricket Ground in Magaluf a charity fundraiser will be held in conjunction with a cricket match between two UK touring teams Huncote CC and Wealdstone CC. Wickets will be pitched at 1.00pm. A buffet will be served, and a raffle with wonderful prizes, kindly donated by local businesses, will be held. All proceeds to the SSAFA charity. Entrance to the picturesque cricket ground is free. The event, ‘The Big Brew Up 2009’, is in aid of SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association - Forces Help) will run in tandem with ‘The Big Brew Up 2009’ events in the UK which take place on the same day. The organisation, which has been serving the Armed Forces and their families for well over a hundred years, is as vital today as ever. ‘The Big Brew Up 2009’ is your opportunity to help our servicemen and women and their families whilst having fun and indulging in the British tradition for a ‘cuppa’ which in this instance is the famous Yorkshire Tea, generously donated for this special event by Taylors of Harrogate. Popular glamorous singer Izzy Newman will be entertaining during the afternoon with some well known standards from the Great American Songbook era. All we need is YOUR support. Further publicity will appear in The Majorca Daily Bulletin or log on to www.mallorca- cricket.com in the meantime please tell your friends and make a note in your diary for this fun day out. If you wish to come along please contact Wendy Peters on 971 23 32 13 or 626 753 699 or e-mail email@example.com in order that she may calculate catering numbers CHIRISTMAS IN PALMANOVA – URGENT NOTICE As stated in the President’s Letter there has been a change to the hotel for this annual event because so many hotels are closing down from the end of October until just before Easter. There are 50 rooms being held for us at the Sol Cala Blanca in Palmanova until 30th September and thereafter it will be on a first come first served basis. Unfortunately we have not been able to get the same rates as before and everyone who had already booked is guaranteed one of these if they wish and it is important that we know promptly of any new bookings. The prices are as follows: STOP PRESS: Since receiving this article the following prices have been reduced by 8% Twin/ Double room (overlooking front of hotel, road view)- €48.50 + 7% iva per person per night based on two persons sharing Double room / single occupancy €48.50 + €20 + 7% iva , Sea View Twin/ Double room €62 + 7% iva per person per night based on two persons sharing All the prices quoted above are for Half Board (Breakfast and dinner) The hotel has kindly agreed that members may stay for four nights 23-27 December or three nights 24-27 December, a concession because the deal is normally a minimum of 4 nights. This does mean that the shorter stay will be marginally more expensive than 4 nights in Magaluf. Christmas Lunch is 50€ per person and is compulsory within the deal. It is NOT a buffet and includes soup, fish and turkey, cava. This is also open to members not staying in the hotel but must be booked well in advance. Please contact Rosemary Bull urgently on 678 652 623 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org with confirmation of current booking, cancellations or new bookings. A deposit of 25% of your total booking will be required to confirm it. 4 Autumn Break For this year's Autumn Hotel Break, we are returning to the popular Bella Playa Hotel in Cala Rajada, The dates will be from Monday 19th October until Saturday 24th October, although this may be extended by a few days, should anyone wish to do so. The special low price will be 38€ per person per night, half board, double room sharing, with the inclusion of water and wine with the evening meals. The single room supplement, where applicable, will be 7€ per night. There is an outdoor pool, numerous sports facilities, entertainment, music and dancing. In addition to the hotel programme, we will be organising walks, visits to local attractions. This year, members will have the opportunity to invite friends and family to join them, as we now have an airport shuttle service to and from the hotel for 12 Euros, which can be booked on line at www.autocareslevante.com All bookings can be made by phoning Maurice Chaundy on 971 565372. If unavailable, leave your phone number and he will call you back. ACCESS CHANGE TO INTERNET SITE: SURNAME and MEMBERSHIP number, all you need to access the Members side of the ESRA internet site effective October 5th. - no need to ¨Register¨ anymore. This is a new and simpler way to access the site. YEAR BOOK COVER COMPETITION Do you have design skills or are you an artist who can come up with a new design for the ESRA Year Book 2010 – 2011. If so we are running a competition for the next Year Book cover. All entries will be welcome but the only stipulation is that your design must represent ESRA and not just be a picture. All entries must be with Rosemary Bentley by 31st December. These will be judged by the Executive Committee and the top three will be passed to Districts to vote on the final winner. TRUE STORY? - John was sitting outside his local pub one day, enjoying a quiet pint and generally feeling good about himself, when a nun suddenly appears at his table and starts decrying the evils of drink. "You should be ashamed of yourself young man! Drinking is a Sin! Alcohol is the blood of the devil!" Now John gets pretty annoyed about this, and goes on the offensive. "How do you know this, Sister?" "My Mother Superior told me so." "But have you ever had a drink yourself? How can you be sure that what you are saying is right?" "Don't be ridiculous--of course I have never taken alcohol myself" "Then let me buy you a drink - if you still believe afterwards that it is evil I will give up drink for life" "How could I, a Nun, sit outside this public house drinking?!" "I'll get the barman to put it in a teacup for you, then no one will ever know." The Nun reluctantly agrees, so John goes inside to the bar. "Another pint for me, and a triple vodka on the rocks", then he lowers his voice and says to the barman "and could you put the vodka in a teacup?" Barman "Oh no! It's not that Nun again is it?"
