Plans for the Barefoot in the Park Festival, May 9-10, 2009 Featured Book: What NOT to Do When You Find a Spaceship Author: Drake Highlander Drake Highlander’s desire to write for children came alive while teaching middle school reading and social studies. Many of his ideas are inspired by his own childhood experiences growing up in a large, close-knit family, and all the outrageous things that went on in that wonderful chaos. Drake lives in Atlanta. Illustrator: Dee Densmore-D’Amico Dee Densmore-D'Amico’s work has appeared in publications such as Cosmopolitan, Women's Wear Daily, and Modern Dog Magazine. She has sketched in the design studios of well known fashion designers, including Diane von Furstenberg. In addition, she has received numerous awards from Parenting Publications of America. Dee’s major influences are Picasso, Antonio Lopez, Hirschfeld, Erte, and Dr. Suess. Dee lives with her family in central New York. Presentations & Activities Reading Time: What Would You Do If You Found a Spaceship? Drake will engage the children, gaining their attention and interest with questions to spur their imagination. Then he will read one or more excerpts, and answer questions about the story and his experience writing this book. Art Activity: Drawing Characters Dee will demonstrate how to draw the main characters from the book and coach the students in the process. Basic drawing supplies will be provided. She will also answer questions about her experience creating illustrations for the book. Display Area Two banners will feature the book with art from the book cover. Free bookmarks will be available while supplies last.
