Parks and Recreation Mission:
The Department provides the residents and visitors of Los Angeles County with
quality recreational opportunities that promote a healthy lifestyle and strengthen
the community through diverse physical, educational, and cultural programming,
and enhances the community environment by acquiring, developing, and main-
taining County Parks, gardens, golf courses, trails and open space areas.
Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation
The Los Angeles County’s Parks and Recreation system includes 63,000 acres of parks, lakes, trails, natural ar-
eas, and gardens, including the Arboretum and Descanso Gardens, and a public golf course system. These in-
cludes 145 regional and community parks where children are introduced to outdoor play, organized sports, and
individual skill development, and where families can stay active and maintain higher quality of lives. Los Angeles
County parks contain 344 miles of horse and hiking trails and 31 public swimming pools. The County has teamed
with the private sector to offer additional amenities at its parks, including boat and bicycle rentals, hot tubs, rec-
reational vehicle parks, equestrian rentals and boarding, and the Raging Waters water park. A series of Nature
Centers, Natural Parks and Habitat Preserves provide education on the native flora and fauna of Los Angeles
County, while four arboreta and botanic gardens introduce visitors to plants from throughout the world. The de-
partment also features the world’s largest municipal golf course system, with 19 courses featuring beautiful vistas
from the mountains to the sea.
The Role of the
Assistant Director,
Parks and Recreation, Unclassified
These unclassified positions report to the Chief Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation and have responsibility
for planning and directing, through subordinate managers, the work of staff engaged in the operation and main-
tenance of park and natural area facilities providing a wide range of recreational and outdoor activities and ser-
vices to the public. Incumbents are responsible, within departmental guidelines, for directing the development
and implementation of recreation, education, maintenance, construction, and facilities planning programs
through effective utilization of staff and other available resources. Incumbents must exercise knowledge of the
principles of personnel administration, planning, and budgeting, and a thorough knowledge of park and recrea-
tion administration and the policies and procedures of the department. Incumbents must also have the ability to
plan, assign, and direct the work of others through subordinate managers, deal effectively with other govern-
mental agencies, elected officials, the public and community groups, and coordinate operations within the de-
partment and with other departments and agencies.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Directs, plans, assigns and evaluates, through subordinate managers, the work of a staff responsible for the op-
eration and maintenance of community and regional park facilities, and natural areas and for the development of
recreation programs within an assigned regional agency.
Participates in the development of departmental objectives, policies, programs and procedures and coordinates
their implementation within an assigned regional agency.
Directs the management activities necessary to administer a region, including preparation and control of the
budget, deployment of the staff and resources, monitoring of private contractors, and preparation of reports.
Directs the preparation of studies to identify and assess the need for existing and proposed recreational services
and to evaluate program effectiveness and costs; implements program changes to meet identified needs and
priorities; conducts and implements studies to solve problems.
Maintains effective relations with other public agencies, organizations, and the public and promotes interest and
participation in parks and recreation, and natural areas programs.
Coordinates regional agency activities with other organizational units of the department, other County depart-
ments, and public and governmental agencies to ensure that program requirements are met.
Represents the department before community groups and individuals to discuss matters related to the establish-
ment, maintenance, and improvement of parks and recreation services and programs in the region.
