MALA Board Meeting Minutes
Wednesday June 10, 2009 1. Girls Meeting: Discussion regarding the season and decided committees would be formed to discuss logistics for next year's state championship game and the 2010 schedule. Future topic of discussion for upcoming girl's meetings: - MAYLA girls joining MALA (July) - All Conference & All-American voting process (August) - State Championship (September) - 2010 schedule (TBD) - City Championship weekend with the boys - Field lining and conditions - Promoting girl's lacrosse in Madison-area schools with local AD's 2. Call to Order at 7:02PM. Attendees: Wollin (MALA Ref Coord/Webmaster), Pflaum (Verona), Spencer (Verona), Hoeft (Waunakee), Teschendorff (Ump. Coord), Bahr (MAYLA Girls), Coelho (MALA Girls VP), Peterson (Regents), Showers (LaF, MALA Treasurer), Haney, (MALA President), Irving (Stoughton), Darcy (MALA Scy), Kinzler (Waunakee), Shaub (LaF), Shea, Berberet (Sun Prairie), Maki (Sun Prairie), Jackson (Stoughton), Konkol (Middleton), West (Sauk) 3. Elections Ballots distributed:13 a. President: Jackson (Stoughton) Final tally 12 For. JACKSON elected. b. Treasurer: Ballweg (LaF) 12 For. Tibbetts (Janesville) 1 For. BALLWEG elected. c. Jackson and Ballweg will commence their respective terms in July, 2009 in accordance with MALA’s Bylaws. 4. Treasurer Update: All fees and bill are paid and current. 5. WLF Update: a. US Lacrosse (USL) will probably host a Level TWO instructional clinic in December, 2009. There is a possibility of USL also hosting a Level ONE clinic in February 2010. Locations for both are TBD. b. Next WLF Board meeting is TBD; elections are planned for September 2009; details to follow. 6. General Information: a. Bylaws Discussion: There was discussion about the formation of a committee to review the existing bylaws for possible updates and changes. The incoming MALA president (Jackson) will form the committee based on those who volunteer for the effort; it is probable the committee will be formed in July. b. Team Points of Contact: Haney stated that this effort should be part of the Bylaws review

Wednesday June 10, 2009 c. All-Conference Voting: Several suggestions were discussed to improve the system used this year. For example, the girls system needs to be improved; there needs to be a better format for capturing editorial comments for players nominated; statistics reporting needs to be standardized using either Madlax’s system or the MaxPreps system; and finally there was discussion about having some kind of “statistics” training conference-wide before the start of the 2010 season. d. Playoff Review: Wollin advised that the current system of playoffs is difficult to manage from a referee perspective especially when JV and V games are often in different places. This led to a brief discussion about going to a “Festival Weekend” type of play-off tournament system. e. 2010 Scheduling: The “Festival” concept was discussed for a short period of time. It was decided that the best way to gauge interest in this concept as well as other schedule-related issues (length of season, season start date etc) was to conduct a survey of team reps within MALA. West and Wollin will work up an online survey which will be promulgated soonest; hopefully results will be available by the July MALA meeting. 7. Officials: From Teschendorf: a. To avoid future payment issues, umpires should be paid by the home team; umpires will push hard for that for 2010. b. All umpires within MALA are USL certified. From Wollin: a. Please provide feedback regarding referees to Wollin soonest so that improvements can be made for 2010. b. Referees are forming an “Officials’ Association” 8. Camps/Clinics: There are several camps, clinics and leagues in the area this summer for both girls and boys. Most up-to-date information regarding camps and clinics can be found on www.madlax.org. 9. Events: a. Badger State Games set for 20-21 June in Appleton. b. Brewtown Showdown (Milwaukee) scheduled for June 27-28, 2009. c. Sun Prairie Youth Tournament slated for June 20-21. d. Madison Visitors and Convention Bureau is looking to host a USL National Youth Festival regional tournament (U11 and U13) and has submitted a bid to USL for these; more information later. 10. New Business: a. The board formally recognized the Conference winners in all categories for both boys and girl. Results are on www.madlax.org b. Haney expressed his thanks to all board members for their efforts during his term. c. Wollin was presented a plaque honoring him as “MALA’s Person of the Year 2009”. d. Bahr (MAYLA Girls) expressed some concerns about moving toward WIAA status for lacrosse and stated that the girls’ game needed continued support to grow if WIAA status was ever to be seriously considered.
