In 1999, he was sentenced to six years for being found guilty of the offense of abuse of power. In
2000, nine years for alleged unnatural offenses (sodomy). However, in 2004, the court, the Federal
Court of Malaysia has to drop the sodomy conviction because prosecutors failed to produce
evidence without any doubt that the act of sodomy had occurred. As such, he was released. In July
2008, he was arrested again on charges of allegations that he sodomized his personal assistant. The
case was referred to the High Court of Malaysia.

On August 26, 2008, Anwar won Permatang Pauh by-election, defeating a candidate who is also BN
assemblymen Seberang Jaya, Arif Shah Omar Shah with Akim candidate Hanafi Mamat, then return
to parliament as opposition leader of Malaysia. He stated the need for liberalization, including the
judiciary and the media, to fight the endemic corruption that he claims it as a reason for the
rejection of the status of a country which failed [1].

Anwar is the only Malaysian who has listed the 100 most influential people alleged in the world by
Time magazine in 2008. [2] [3]
