Afternoon Session Stream A - Liquid Phase & Inorganic Analysis Session 2.00pm - 2.45pm Solving problems in food laboratories with LC coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. A review of possibilities with QQQ LC/MS/MS and Q-TOF LC/MS/MS, because of the capability to deliver Multiple Residue Monitoring, has rapidly established itself as the definitive technique for measuring (LC favourable) trace compounds in foods. The technique is very effective for known target compounds, however the reduction in sensitivity in scanning mode and the potential for chemical noise to drown out the analyte signal means that MS/MS isnt as effective for the identification of unknowns. Also, it can be difficult to build useful LC/MS spectral libraries because of the problems of standardising fragmentation energies. The LC Q-TOF delivers MS/MS functionality, however the TOF component also brings with it accurate mass measurements. With accurate mass comes the ability to narrow a search to a lower number of possible molecular formulae that can be catalogued in a robust and reliable database. While pesticides are problematic around the world, veterinary drug residues in meat are also compounds that are closely monitored. Measuring drug residues in human sampe also stretches the capabilities of the laboratory. All of these examples share two common issues: 1) There is a need to measure them at very low concentrations; 2) The matrix in which the measurement is to be made is often complicated, contributing hundreds of peaks to a chromatogram.
