IMPERIAL COUNTY CLASS TITLE: ELECTRICIAN II BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor II-Mechanical, perform journey-level electrical work in the repair, maintenance, alteration and construction of County buildings and facilities; install, repair, service and maintain electrical systems and equipment; perform complex and varied electronics repair and installation tasks for the County. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Electrician II class performs journey-level electrical repairs and installations and must be certified to perform complex and varied electronics tasks. Electrician I incumbents perform journey-level electrical work. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Inspect, repair, install, service and maintain electrical systems including conduit and duct systems, lighting and power circuits, transformers, control equipment, switches, switchboards and fire alarms. Perform complex and varied electronics repair and installation tasks for the County; install, modify and maintain various equipment requiring knowledge in electronics. Install or replace necessary interior and exterior wiring for equipment, appliances and lighting. Respond to emergency calls such as computer failures, repair low voltage, lighting controls and relays, electrical switches, plugs, fuses, breakers and ballasts; replace lighting fixtures; assist in the repair of heating and air conditioning systems; troubleshoot electrical power for telephones. Repair small electrical appliance such as toasters, garbage disposals, coffee pots, steam pots, electrical ovens and food warmers; repair large appliances such as washing machines, dryers and water heaters. Service emergency generators by changing oil filters and oil, changing fuel filters, fan belts or other parts. Build brackets with arc welder and torch for motors, pumps, coolers and light fixtures. Observe and comply with federal, State and local electrical codes. Climb power poles and light poles to repair power lines and parking lot lights; operate a hydraulic hoist lift. July 2011 Electrician II - Continued Page 2 Operate a variety of tools and equipment such as drill press, metal saw, arc welder, gas welder, power snake, lathe, power press, pick-up truck, jackhammer, rotohammer, pipe threader, steam cleaner, backhoe trencher, boom truck, hack saw, wire puller snake, telephone, screw driver, hammer, volt meter, wire cutter, pliers, wood saw, metal saw, soldering iron, electrical grill, grinder and electrical testing equipment. Maintain routine records of work performed; purchase supplies and materials according to established guidelines and procedures. Repair water pressure or sewer pumps by changing motors or repairing pump seals and impeller. Plan and lay out tasks; interpret electrical plans, diagrams, blueprints, sketches and specifications; design and layout circuitry systems; work from sketches, plans, drawings, blueprints and specifications. Diagnose and resolve difficult electrical problems; observe safety of others and recommend precautionary action while repairs are in progress as necessary. Maintain and repair security doors and gates; adjust warning lights in housing control; adjust and grease inner and outer gates. Provide work direction and guidance to other maintenance personnel as assigned to properly and safely complete work orders; assist other maintenance personnel as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: National Electrical Code, Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety, and local electrical ordinances. Repair maintenance and installation of electronics equipment. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Basic electrical theory and calculation of formulas. Health and safety regulations. Record-keeping techniques. Materials, methods, tools and equipment used in electrical work. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled electrical work in the repair, maintenance, alteration and construction of County buildings and facilities. Perform complex and varied electronics tasks. Make arithmetic calculations related to specialty quickly and accurately. Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work independently with little direction. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Provide work direction to others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: four years journey-level electrical experience. LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license; certificate by CAL/OSHA to operate a stud gun within three months of employment. Incumbents in this classification must pass a law enforcement security check. Incumbents must be certified to perform electronics tasks within six months of assignment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work includes indoor and outdoor environment; subject to seasonal heat, and driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical abilities required include climbing structures, electrical poles, ladders and stairs up to 50 feet, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or dragging items up to 100 pounds, standing for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools. Incumbents are exposed to electrical power supply and high voltage, working on ladders or electrical poles, and working at heights. July 2011
