Place of birth: Paris (75) France

Summary:

I am a French doctor specializing in Diabetes and Nutrition. I completed my residency
and my fellowship and became an Assistant Professor in Paris. I completed a master’s degree in
Nutrition.
The subject of my thesis was Treatment for 2 mo with n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids
reduces adiposity and some atherogenic factors but does not improve insulin sensitivity in women
with type 2 diabetes: a randomized controlled study. We show that this kind of supplementation
was without deleterious effects on insulin sensitivity and could improve some parameters of
adiposity. This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in December
2007.
During my residency I was particularly interested in the relationship between nutrition
and diseases, such as chronic renal failure or diabetes, As a resident in endocrinology, I was in
charge of explaining to patients the role of nutrition in disease management and instructing them
in nutritional aspects of healthy eating.
During my fellowship as an Assistant Professor, I was responsible for the supervision of
an in-patient hospitalization unit (10 to 15 patients) as well as weekly lectures to patients who
were hospitalized on topics such as: how to eat when you are diabetic; what are fats and which
ones are good or not. We worked to develop methods to change eating behaviors of diabetic
patients, because we believe that this is the best way for patients to improve their glycemic levels
(when combined with physical activity).
As a Fellow, I was also in charge of lectures for medical students, discussing Nutrition
topics such as: how to make a prescription diet; what kind of diet is ideal for diabetic patients;
what kind of diet is ideal for patients that are currently taking corticoids; and denutrition and the
way to treat it.

Narrative Report of Research Contributions:

1) Title:
Two month n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid treatment reduces adiposity, atherogenic factors and
some inflammation-related genes in adipose tissue but could not improve insulin sensitivity in
women with type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled study

 2) Abstract:
OBJECTIVE - Effect of a moderate dose of fish oil supplementation on adiposity and
inflammation-related markers are insufficiently clarified in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Beneficial
effects on adipose tissue function and morphology as well as on insulin sensitivity could be only
detected in insulin-resistant rodents. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects
of n-3 PUFA on insulin sensitivity, adiposity and adipose tissue inflammation-related genes in
 diabetes.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - Twenty-seven women with T2D were randomly
allocated to two months of 3 g/day of either fish oil (1.8 g n-3 PUFA) or placebo (paraffin oil), in
a double blind parallel design.
RESULTS - Although energy intake and body weight were unchanged by both treatments, total
fat mass (p<0.01) and subcutaneous adipocyte diameter (p<0.05) were reduced with fish oil.
Insulin sensitivity measured by the euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp was similar after the fish
oil and placebo treatments. By contrast, atherogenic risk factors, including plasma triglycerides,

                                                 3
triglycerides/HDL-cholesterol ratio (atherogenic index, p<0.05) and plasma PAI-1 (p <0.01) were
reduced and plasma adiponectin levels tended to increase (p<0.08) in response to fish-oil. In
addition, a subset of inflammation-related genes was reduced in subcutaneous adipose tissue after
fish oil treatment.
CONCLUSIONS - Two month n-3 PUFA reduced atherogenic and adiposity markers and
adipose tissue inflammation-related genes in T2D women, without deterioration of insulin
sensitivity. These effects could postpone atherogenic and cardiovascular complications in
diabetes. The beneficial effects of n-3 PUFA might be linked to adipose tissue morphological
and inflammatory changes.
