The international Council of Monuments and sites (iCOMOs) nominate a theme each year for celebration on 18 April and chose water for 2011. We are thrilled to work closely with Australia iCOMOs in promoting a celebration of our cultural heritage in victoria. From Steam to Surf recognises the importance of steam power in the nineteenth century, and the tangible and intangible significance of surfing in post-war victoria. From Steam to Surf succinctly link the past to the present. ‘steam’ is symbolic of engineering and railways, and ‘surf’ represents the tangible and intangible culture of surfing in Australia. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the Bells Beach Classic surfing competition at Torquay, and the international significance of Bells Beach was recognised by the National Trust when it classified Bells Beach more than ten years ago. The Surf World Museum at Torquay has a special exhibition to chart the world’s longest running surfing contest. On 8 April there will be a formal launch of the Festival at Maryborough by the Central Goldfields Shire. The same day we are pleased to present in partnership with National Carpentry Day a community breakfast BBQ at our reopened historic farm property gulf station at yarra glen. The festival builds on our highly successful Geelong & region festival of 2010 and incorporates the rushworth easter heritage festival and City of Ballarat heritage festival, We conclude with the Blues train - a unique experience that combines live music and the beautiful scenery of the Bellarine peninsula from a steam train - a mini-festival in one night! More events are likely to be added to the program so please check our website www.nattrust.com.au for the latest news. i would particularly like to acknowledge our partners in local government – the City of greater geelong, the City of Ballarat and the Central goldfields shire for their work in bringing this event together.
