Job Description Job Title: Occupational Therapy Service Manager
Main Purpose of Job To be directly responsible for the delivery of an effective Occupational Therapy Service and associated budget. To provide professional leadership to all Occupational Therapy staff employed by the service taking overall responsibility for staff management including recruitment, appraisal, CPD and discipline. To be responsible for strategic and operational management of the service.
Location/Base Amulree Day Hospital St Mary’s Hospital. Grade/Salary Hours 37½ per week Type of Contract Full/Permanent Accountability Line managed by the Associate Director – Older Peoples Directorate.

The Occupational Therapy Service Manager will directly supervise: Senior clinicians leading the following Occupational Therapy teams: Elderly Mental Health. Medical Rehabilitation. Ward-based rehabilitation for stroke and general rehabilitation. Rapid Response Occupational Therapy in the community. Clinical Specialist/Senior clinicians. 1. Scope and Authority To be professionally and operationally accountable for the delivery of Occupational Therapy Service. To strategically plan and develop the service in line with national and local drivers that are service and profession specific. Translate and transform national policies, directives and guidelines into service specific local policy and action. To work across locations and community settings to represent the Occupational Therapy Service within the Health and Social Care Arena. To work with other Health and Social Care Managers/Leads within the PCT and neighbouring trusts to ensure equitable and effective service delivery. To ensure that services are evidence based, protocol driven and client centered. To ensure that the Occupational Therapy Service contributes to clinical governance structure of the PCT and meets professional clinical governance requirements.
To be actively involved in the Older People and Promoting Independence Directorate Management team. Qualifications Diploma or Degree of the college of Occupational Therapy/BSC Health Professions Council Registration. Masters degree in relevant field or evidence of post graduate management training in relevant field. Proof of clinical updating via portfolios.

Knowledge and Experience Minimum of 10 years post-graduate experience. Experience of managing staff within a diverse service. Operational management experience. Experience of business planning. Skills and experience in influencing, communicating with, facilitating and networking across a range of services. Advanced knowledge in a particular area or specialty. Experience of audit/research activity. Key Responsibilities To be professionally accountable for the practice and competence of all Occupational Therapists working within the service ensuring the service meets the agreed professional standards of practice. To prepare, produce and execute business plans and operational policies. To take a lead role in developing new services and initiatives affecting Occupational Therapy Service provision within the PCT. To contribute to the PCT business plan and local delivery plan. To provide specialist professional advice to the Primary Care Trust and internal and external stakeholders. Active involvement in the Older People and Promoting Independence Directorate management team. To assume the lead role in the development of multi-agency strategy, working with and alongside colleagues in other statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure a seamless service provision to clients. To work as a senior representative of the profession to determine Trustwide Occupational Therapy policies and standards and ensure their successful implementation. To take the lead on risk management ensuring systems are in place to improve service provision through risk event reporting and problem sharing. To deal with complaints and grievance procedures. To act autonomously and with freedom in strategic areas of the service to ensure clinical effectiveness. To lead on the skill mix, recruitment and retention strategies for the Occupational Therapy Service To be responsible for and effectively manage the Occupational Therapy Service budget. To develop and maintain robust and efficient communication systems both within the Occupational Therapy Service and the wider Health and Social Care arena. To use in-depth analytical and judgement skills when problem solving within all areas of the service to identify complex issues and their resolution.

To be proactive in formulating long term strategies which may impact across other organisations and therefore imply uncertainty, but still need to be identified and worked towards. To be responsible for the cascading of complex or sensitive information to staff in a timely manner using highly developed interpersonal skills to manage resultant anxiety or hostility appropriately. To undertake on-call duties as part of the on-call managers rota. To ensure high quality clinical placements for Occupational Therapy and New Generation Project students To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal in line with local guidelines. To apply specialist skills and knowledge in order to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Head Occupational Therapist. Demonstrate skills to manage exposure to unpleasant working conditions e.g. unavoidable hazards, body fluids, challenging behaviour etc.

This includes data relating to patients and other members of staff. Data must not be disclosed to any unauthorized person and must be regarded as strictly confidential at all times. Failure to adhere to this instruction will be regarded as serious misconduct and could lead to dismissal. 10. Confidentiality The jobholder will be in possession of personal details of staff and clients and other confidential information. This must not be discussed or divulged to any unauthorized person. Any such instance would result in dismissal. 11. Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 This post is subject to an exception order under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This stipulates that all previous convictions, including those that are ‘spent’ must be declared. Previous convictions will not necessarily preclude an individual from employment within the PCT but must be declared in writing at the appropriate stage during the recruitment process. 12. Substance Misuse Policy This PCT operates a Substance Misuse Policy. 13. No Smoking Policy This PCT operates a no smoking policy within all its premises and their grounds.
