    How to Access CINAHL Plus with
               Full Text
   Go to the HSU Library home page at
    http://library.humboldt.edu
   Click on Articles and Databases
   Click on C in the Databases A to Z Listing
   Click on CINAHL Plus with Full Text
   Note: If you are using a computer from off campus, you
    will be prompted for your campus web email login and
    password

   Search by word, word root, or phrase; e.g.,
     diabetes

     gastro*

     patient   controlled analgesia
   Use truncation/wild card symbols to
    search word root(s) and variations in
    spelling

   Asterisk (*)
     Unlimited number of characters may follow word
      root
     gastro* searches for gastroenteritis,
        gastroenterology, gastrointestinal, etc.
   Question Mark (?)
     One character may follow word root
     needle? searches needles, needled, etc. but does
      not search needle or needlestick

   If you do not specify a field, you will search Title,
    Abstract and Subject Headings (both Major and
    Minor)
   If you wish to search the entire record (all fields),
    choose TX All Text from the pull-down menu
   You may browse the terms or words in a field by
    clicking on the        link above the search box. This is
    especially recommended when searching by author.

Combine Your Search Terms

AND, OR, NOT
   Use AND to narrow a search – both terms
    must be present, e.g., deafness AND
    patient*

   Use OR to expand a search – either term will
    be present, e.g., children OR infant?

   Use NOT to exclude a term – second term
    will not be present, e.g., infant NOT
    newborn
      USE NOT WITH CAUTION

   NEAR (N#)
     Terms must appear within # words of each other
     Terms may be in any order
     Narrows a search
     Example: elder N2 abuse

   WITHIN (W#)
     Terms must appear within # words of each other
     Terms must be in the order entered
     Narrows a search
     Example: delirium W2 cancer

            Limiting Your Search
   Limit your search by year, language, peer-reviewed
    articles, full text articles, etc. by scrolling to the Limit
    your results: section of the search screen
   BEWARE: If you check the Full Text box, only full
    text items in the CINAHL database will be
    retrieved. You will eliminate all other items
    available in full text through HSU Library
   You may expand your search by clicking on the
    Expanders link on the Limit your results: section of
    the search screen

              Subject Searching
   The easiest and best way to search for
    information on a particular topic is to search the
    CINAHL Headings by clicking the
    link above the search box(es)
   Type your term or phrase and click
   You will go to that term or phrase in the list of
    CINAHL subject headings

   Note that Sepsis is the preferred subject
    heading
   Roll cursor over the Scope link to get the
    definition of the heading
   Click on the heading of interest to get the
    narrower/broader terms (tree view) around
    Sepsis

   If you wish to include all narrower headings
    (bacteremia, fungemia, neonatal sepsis, shock
    septic) in your search, check the Explode box.
   If you want Sepsis to be the major focus of the
    article/reference, check the Major Concept
    box.
   Use the Qualify Subheadings to refine your
    search if desired. Click on the Scope link to get
    the scope note/definition.

   Once you have the desired heading (with
    subheadings, if desired), select AND, OR, NOT
    from the pull-down                menu and click
                 to include it in your search.
   The heading will be added to the search.
   You may now browse for additional CINAHL
    heading(s) and add them to your search.
   When done, click

        Getting the Search Results
   When you click the Search button, a list of records will
    appear with the author, title, source fields displayed.

   Display the complete record by clicking on the
    title link
   You may reduce the number of results by
    clicking on any subject(s) on the left hand side
    of the Result List
   Go through the Result List and click      to put
    items of interest in a folder

   When done, click on               to view the
    folder contents
   Now you may click on         ,      ,
   If you want to access the folder after you leave
    CINAHL Plus with Full Text, click on “To store
    these items in the folder for a future session,
    Sign In”

   Click on any full text links
       PDF Full Text
       Linked Full Text
   If there is no full text link, click on
    If you are no longer in CINAHL Plus with Full
    Text, search the Journal and Newspaper Finder
    (for electronic and print journals & serials)
    and/or the Library Catalog

      If the Full Text is not available
    through CINAHL or HSU Library
   You may request it from another library using our
    Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL)
   There are links to ILL when no full text is found using
    the          button or you can go to the ILL web page
    from the HSU Library home page
   This takes time! Please begin your research early so you
    have time to get any needed articles, etc. through ILL

Please be SELECTIVE when
   requesting items from
     Interlibrary Loan !
Be aware that although there is no cost
 to the student who requests articles
through ILL, the Library often has to
pay copyright fees which can be costly
    for medically-related journals.
