BARCODE
TREND Q1
REPORT 2011

         FEB

   JAN
     INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Mobile Barcode Trend
Report, which looks at the latest data and analysis from
barcode scanning aggregated across 30 countries around
the world. Mobile barcode scanning consists of the
traditional UPC or EAN barcode which is found on virtually
every package, or the newer 2D or two-dimensional formats
including QR Code, Datamatrix, and EZcode which are
placed on marketing or media material.

The growth in mobile barcode scanning was significant in
2010 as traffic increased over 1600%, and doubled in the
fourth quarter. This report takes a deeper look at the specific
data from the 1st Quarter to provide insights around what
type of people are scanning and what they are interested in.

Unless otherwise indicated, the data was collected globally
from the ScanLife platform from January 1st, 2011 to March
31st, 2011. The data is a cross-section from the ScanLife app,
and a variety of other 3rd party apps that are able to scan
     standard QR Codes.

     OVERALL GROWTH OF
     MOBILE BARCODE SCANNING:
     KEY TAKEAWAYS:
     • Traffic increased over 800% from this time a year ago
     • 2D barcodes saw more scans than 1D (upc codes) for the first time since Q2, 2010
     • Retail and media industries generated some of the most scanned 2D barcode campaigns
     • Android OS continues to generate the most scans, but more come from the iPhone
       than any other single device

p3
     RATIO OF 1D AND 2D
     BARCODE SCANNING:
     KEY TAKEAWAYS:
     • The 1st quarter saw more 2D scans than 1D as UPC scanning subsided from the holiday
       shopping surge.
     • This may also show that 2D barcodes, like QR Codes, are becoming more commonly
       adopted by end users.
Note: 2D traffic includes 3rd party apps while 1D traffic is only sourced from the ScanLife app

                                                                                                       1D
