Client Installation - TCM 8.2 - Synergy 8.3.1
Note: Throughout this document, “?:” refers to the drive letter that you want to install the client on.
It must be a physical drive on the workstation.
Before you install Synergy on the client:
Make sure that the Internet Explorer version on the client is at least 5.5 with Service Pack 2
Windows 2000 workstations should be at Service Pack 4 or better
Windows XP should be at Service Pack 2 or better. If not, you can download the upgrade
from the Microsoft website.
1. (Optional) Shutdown virus scanner.
If the client is running a virus scanner that can be shutdown easily, you may want to do this if
clients are taking a long time to install. Virus scanners (depending on how they were set up)
can greatly increase the amount of time it takes to install a client.
2. Check to see if Synergy is installed.
If the client did not have a previous installation of Synergy on it, or if the previous Synergy
version was 7.5 or later, skip to step #8.
3. Remove any ODBC data sources that refer to WorkWise ISAM data.
Start the Control Panel.
Select Data Sources (ODBC).
Go through each tab and remove all xfODBC and/or Synergy driver entries.
Note: Only some of the tabs have a Remove button. If you find some synergy driver entries on
tabs without Remove buttons, close the window and check again after a few seconds.
The Removes in the first 2 tabs take a few moments to affect the rest of the tabs.
4. Run the old installation program
From the Add/Remove icon on the Control Panel, if no Synergy DE components are listed
then run the old installation program:
Double-click on setup.exe in the \Products_V82\SynergyDE folder) and select to
remove the old version of Synergy.
Otherwise, select and remove the Synergy programs (if they exist) in this order: (if
asked about delete of shared files, answer NO)
o Synergy xfServer
o Synergy SQL Connectivity
o Synergy License Manager

5. Confirm that all the Synergy/DE components are no longer present in the list of applications.
Clean up any remaining Synergy folders and system environment variables if they exist.
Delete the old Synergy directories (named something like C:\SynergyDE and/or
Remove any xfODBC files (VTX*.* or TOD32*.*) files that were not removed from the
windows system directory (C:\Winnt\system32).
From the Control Panel, double-click the System icon and select the environment tab.
Click the PATH environment variable and remove any references to Synergy/DE
components or any reference to other system variables that point to SynergyDE.
Remove any system environment variables that point to SynergyDE.
Check for a folder in the WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs folder called
SynergyDE or Synergy. If found, delete it.
Note: Do not remove the Synergy folder under the TCM or EMS folder that resides in the
Programs folder. Only remove any Synergy program group in the Programs folder.
Windows installation processes will not remove certain files until a reboot occurs.
7. Check to see if this workstation has .NET Framework version 1.1 and version 2.0 installed.
Go into Add/Remove programs from the Administrative Tools selection in the Windows
If they are both there, go to step 11.
If only 1.1 is there, go to step 10.
Use Windows Explorer and navigate to the Products_V82 share on the TCM
Drill down to the Microsoft folder and execute the dotnetfxV1.1.exe program.
Accept all defaults. If it tells you that Microsoft Framework 1.1 already exists on
this machine, exit from the install.
8. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 patch
This is located in the Microsoft folder in the Products_V82 share.
If the client is being installed on a Windows 2003 server, run Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1 SP1_WindowsServer2003.EXE.
Otherwise run Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.exe.

9. If Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is not already installed, using Windows Explorer, go to the
Products_V82 share on the TCM server.
Drill down to the Microsoft folder and execute dotnetfx_v20.exe.
Note: If it tells you that you need to install the Windows Installer 3.0 version first, you can get
that from either the Microsoft folder on CD1 or from the Microsoft website.
10. Install SynergyDE using the following steps.
Note: To do a Synergy client install on a terminal server, you must be on the console. It will
not work from a terminal server client.
From the Products_V82 share on the TCM server, drill down to the
\Synergyde\windows folder and execute 101SDE831d.exe.
At the Save files in Folder prompt, use the default. This is a temp folder and is deleted
after the installation.
When prompted for which
components to install, select
Change to change the default
Do NOT accept the default.
Change the folder name to:
as the top level.
Select to install all
components and sub-
-Files for shared installation
Click “Next” to continue.
Note: If a message displays saying Synergy Products may be running, select yes to continue.
If Synergy was never installed on this machine before, you will see a window for the
Synergy License. Select Network Client, enter the name of the TCM License server,
and click Next.
If the system requests a reboot, select No.

11. Install Synergy .NET from the \SynergyDE\windows folder in the
Products_V82 share on the TCM server
At the Save Files in Folder
prompt, use the default. This
is a temp folder and is be
deleted after the installation.
Change the default folder for
the installation. Do NOT
accept the default.
Select Change to change
the default installation folder
12. If you are installing the TCM client on Windows 2003 or XP, skip this step.
Install the Microsoft MDAC patch (ENU_Q832483_MDAC.EXE), located in the Microsoft folder
in the Products_V82 share.
Note: If you get an error running this patch, it means that it was already installed or it cannot
determine the version currently installed, skip this step.
13. Adjust Zone .NET Security, using Start / Programs / Administrative Tools / Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1 / Configuration.
In the right-pane, click

Select Make changes to

Click the Local Intranet icon
Move the slider to Full Trust.
14. Install the TCM client from the install\win_client folder in the V82_TCM share on the TCM
Double-click TCM V8.2 Client.msi
15. If a TCM client exists on this machine for a version prior to TCM 7.0, copy the following lines
to the emsenvset_lcl.bat file in the \V60_TCMENV folder
NOTE: In TCM V5.3, this folder is called EMSENV.
o set DBLDIR=
o set DBLBINDIR=
o set SYNERGYDE=
Make sure these variables are not set in the SYNERGY.INI file in C:/winnt or C:/windows.
16. If you stopped the virus scanner program in step 1, you should re-start it.

17. If the TCM client is being installed on a 2003 server (or 2003 terminal server) other than the
TCM application server, you must allow the client to execute TCM setup files remotely by
doing the following:
On the 2003 client machine, open the Group policy Editor (Start | Run | gpedit.msc).
o Drill down to the security selection for the Internet Explorer (Local Computer
Policy | User Configuration | Windows Settings | Internet Explorer Maintenance |
o Open Security Zones and Content Ratings.
In the Security and Privacy Settings Tab, select Import the current security zones
and privacy settings.
o You should see an Internet Enhanced Security Configuration box.
o Choose to Continue.
Click Modify Settings.
From the Security Tab, select Local Intranet and click Sites.
Click Advanced. In the Add this Web site to the zone: add the name of the TCM
application server (ex: TCMServer). Do not include any slashes in your entry.
Exit from the Group Policy Editor.
19. Test the client by running TCM from the Start button.
If installing on XP, you may see the following message when executing TCM the first time.
Select Unblock. Do NOT select Keep Blocking.
Note: Various other TCM applications may display a similar window the first time they are run.
You should also unblock each of these.

Note: Make sure to test all versions of TCM installed on the client.
If you get a license failure error when starting TCM 8.2, you need to re-add the license keys
from the server at the V8.2 TCM command prompt as follows:
Change the date on the client to 4/1/02.
From the TCM command prompt, type: lmu -k D0XP-4498-PDBP
This removes your license information, continue Y/N? y
From the TCM command prompt, type: lmu -d
Note: You are installing License Manager. Once installed on this system, it may not be
transferred to or used on another system.
