A lot of activity took place over Veterans Day with the posting of the downtown flags,
breakfast at the VFW Post, the Vet's Day Parade, flag presentations, and a special Vet's
Program presented by the WAHI JROTC cadets. Special thanks to all members who partici-
pated and to the Scouts and parents of Troop 305 for assisting.
Mr. Simean Francis, US Army Corps of Engineers, presented an interesting and informative
program describing the Corps' work in Iraq at our November Post Meeting. Mr. Simean has
served there for four years and provided tremendous insight into the nature and diffi-
culties of the tasks at hand. It's not an easy job!
Have an enjoyable Thanksgiving and don't forget to make your reservations for the
Christmas Dinner.

                                          AMERICAN VETERANS—AMVETS
A leader since 1944 in preserving the freedoms secured by America's Armed Forces, AMVETS provides, not only sup-
port for veterans and the active military in procuring their earned entitlements, but also community services that en-
hance the quality of life for this nation's citizens 1-877-7AMVETS

To provide veterans, military personnel and their families with important health information on
serious medical conditions and ailments that disproportionally affect those who have served.
This is our second in our series of “Faces” for this monthly
newsletter and sadly this month is about Mary Pat Atchison
who died on November 6th.
I like to tell this story about Mary Pat and the valuable lesson
she taught me, but first a little history. I first met Mary Pat
and her husband Terry in about 1995 when a committee was
formed to build the statue of General Wainwright and re-
name the VA Medical Center. Both were very active and
community minded people and Terry jumped right in to help
with the project. After completing that project we seemed
to be a committee without an organization so in 2000 we
formed the AMVETS Post #1111 and Terry being a veteran
became a charter member.
In 2001 we were an organization looking for a community
project and the day after Flag Day I received a call from Kath-
leen Obenland of the Union Bulletin, asking why there were
no flags on Main Street for Flag Day. I found that the organi-
zation that had been doing the project for years had been
dissolved so I presented the opportunity to our membership
and we had a project.
We were starting from scratch and needed to raise lots of
money to purchase all the flags and poles and a trailer, I
needed to write a letter to the Walla Walla merchants re-
questing donations. This is where Mary Pat comes in and vol-
unteers to help write the letter. Actually, I think Terry volun-
teered her. In the letter she suggested we ask for contribu-
tions in amounts of $50.00 to $500.00 levels. I remember
saying you have got to be kidding, five hundred dollars! I was
thinking more like $10.00 to $50.00. She said it never hurt to
ask for more.
A week went by after mailing the letters and I checked the
box every day looking hopefully for something to arrive when
finally three envelopes arrived with checks. The very first
envelope contained $500.00 and the second contained
$250.00, I knew then we had a winner. We have used
that same letter every year since, with minor changes .
The Downtown Walla Walla Flags program has been a
great success for our post and the City of Walla Walla.
                  Thank you Mary Pat!

A beautiful new WWI Memorial stands at the Myra Road Entrance to Fort Walla Walla Park.
Ninety one years have passed since these French made cannons were silenced and they have now found a
new home at a very appropriate location at the entrance to Fort Walla Walla Park off Myra Road. On Vet-
eran’s Day November 11, 2009 the dedication of this World War I Memorial took place in honor of the men
and women of that war and the Walla Walla Guardsmen of the 146th Field Artillery Regiment, a Washington
National Guard unit, who brought them home from France.

Thanks to the “Loose Cannon Committee” Doug Saturno Chairman, and the City of Walla Walla Parks Dept.
