Drinking Facts
The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Survey results suggest that
between 1996 and 2005, Oakland County students who drank over the
previous month have declined for every survey group: eighth grade
students (-28.6%), tenth grade students (-16.2%), and twelfth grade
 students (-7.9%).

The 2005 survey suggests that between one-half and two-thirds of all
the drinking in the past month was binge drinking (5+ drinks in one
 sitting) for every reporting grade.

Oakland County students perceived that the availability to easily obtain
alcohol increases with age and is extremely high (95%) with twelfth
grade students. This has decreased slightly over time.

Over 18% of high school seniors identified their first use of alcohol
 taking place in ninth grade.

                                                                            2

Drinking Facts

While both riding with someone who has been drinking and driving
while drinking declined for each age grade over the decade of the
survey, a significant number of students are still riding with or
driving after drinking. In 2005 for high school seniors:
7% reported driving after binge drinking,
14% reporting driving after some drinks,
9% reported riding with a driver that was binge drinking, and
22% reported riding with a driver that had some drinks.

During the decade between 1996-2005, student alcohol use is most
likely at a friend’s house, at home, or at a party and least likely at a
 school or school function.
