          Angolan cuisine is distinctive,
             varied – and delicious

      n the introduction to one of the first Angolan cookery books,
      Cozinha Tradicional de Angola , Ana da Costa Cabral writes that
      “Angola is a land of fascination, colour and happiness; a vibrant
  nature, an affable people and beautiful landscapes. But amongst her
  greatest riches we encounter some real pearls for the palate. Angolan
  gastronomy is delicious and varied.”
       The preparation of food and cuisine plays a significant part in
  defining our collective identities: we become who we are as we sit
  around the table eating together.
        As part of the ideology of nationalism, every country is sup-
  posed to have its own distinctive cuisine which all its citizens can
  enjoy together, but it is only in recent years that African countries
  have started defining their own national cuisine and national dishes.
        In those countries which were part of the former Portuguese
  empire, such as Angola, cuisine has become an important part of the

                                                                                          gala ceremony attended by
                                                                                    President José Eduardo dos Santos.
                                                                                    Towering above downtown Luanda, the
                                                                                    95-meter-high building was inspired by
                                                                                    the shape of an oil platform and has two
                                                                                    gyms, a restaurant and a library, as well as
                                                                                    office space.
                                                                                         The landmark building means that
                                                                                    Sonangol staff can move out of the
                                                                                    cramped offices in the old headquarters
                                                                                    across the road and into the most mod-
                                                                                    ern office block in Angola.

The world’s largest subsea separation
system will soon be installed in Angolan
waters, using brand new technology that
is both cheaper and more efficient.
