Since this was the National Team, an announcer came along and kept things lively during the match with commentary that also served to help those of us unfamiliar with the sport to understand what was going on. Although our local team acquitted themselves well, they did go down in defeat to the visitors, but, the match was enjoyed by all and a fair amount of money was raised by the Rotary Club that will go towards projects in our community. We plan to continue to sponsor these matches in Placencia and also hope to help to send our local team to play an away match in 2010. Our thanks go out, as always, to Polo and the members of the Placencia team. MEDICAL UPDATE Last month we reported on the Medical Clinic provided by the School Bells organization working with the Rotary Club of Placencia. In early December, Greg and Wanda were returning from a visit to the U.S. and ran into David and Martha Shepard, who were here in November as pharmacists for the clinic. David and Martha were back in the country as part of the team for another clinic in Belize and turned over a significant quantity of adult vitamins for our clinic in Placencia Village. These vitamins have been turned over to Dr. Alexis for distribution as he sees fit. We wish to thank David and Martha Shepard for their generosity and look forward to seeing them down here again soon. SCHOLARSHIPS The Rotary Club of Placencia currently provides a scholarship for one student to attend high school, but, more will soon be available. Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic, represented by Dr. Wayne Warnica, a contribution has been made to provide for several additional scholarships. During the coming weeks, we will be working with Dr. Warnica to define the parameters for the awarding of these scholarships and we will let everyone know when this is completed. We thank Dr. Warnica (who, working with Honorary Rotarian Ralph Capeling, made a significant contribution to the Medical Clinic in Placencia Continued on pg 8 SEA Dates in 2010 to remember 11 & 12 February – Whale Shark Guide Training 26 February – Deposits due for Lottery 11 March - Information due for Whale Shark Id’s - Whale Shark meeting and Lottery drawing The Placencia Breeze January 2010- Page 5 Student of the Month Discover the 'sensitive' plant December 2009 By Barbara Fahs The holidays are over. It's a stressful time for some people, so now that normal life has resumed, it's the perfect time to clean out your closets, make a big pot of hearty soup and just kick back and relax. And if you are so inclined, maybe you'd like to indulge yourself and your partner with a massage using an oil you can make from one of our common weeds. Mimosa pudica is best known in Hawai'i as "sleeping grass" or "sensitive plant" because of its habit of closing up its little leaves when you touch them. In Hawaiian it is called Pua Hilahila, which translates to "ashamed" or "bashful." The Hawaiians of olden times used its leaves and flowers to make a tea to promote restful sleep. They also St. John’s Student of the Month for December - Front Row: Infant I - made massage oil from the roots, which are thought to have Dominic Tut, Infant I - Le-andra Lemus. In addition to its aphrodisiac effects, it has been used for insomnia and central nervous system disorders. The Mayans in Belize, Central America, prepare the plant as a sleep aid by toasting the leaves and stems, reducing them to a powder by passing the mixture through a sieve, then sprinkling the powder into the last meal of the day. Others smoke the powdered leaves. If you don't already have Hilahila growing on your property, you might think twice before you purposely introduce it because it's a pesky weed whose small thorns make it hard to pull out of the ground. But if you want to grow it, gather some dried seedpods from a friend's yard. Soak them in hot water for 12 hours and then plant the seeds that have swelled up. Cover the seeds with one- quarter inch of soil. You can start them in a flat full of potting soil or plant them directly into a sunny spot in your garden. Relaxing tea Gather 10 fresh sprigs of Hilahila, 6-inches long, then chop them into 1-inch pieces. You can include the flowers and seeds if there are any. Place your plant material into a teapot, then cover with boiling water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink it hot or chilled. Continued on page 7 THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST 1. The second Annual Placencia Village Christmas Parade was a rousing success, with three vehicles participating on this year’s Christmas Eve Parade, including the new fire truck. The parade again organized by Mr. Jose Fuentes amused and entertained villagers and visitor alike, with wailing sirens, music, the second appearance of the dancing Christmas Tree. Two Santa’s, and festively gowned Christmas ladies, dispensing goodies to the kids, of all age. The parade staged at the Placencia Water Tower, and proceeded down the length of the village to the road’s end, at Placencia Point. The occasional blast of the new fire truck siren, and the loud horn and flashing lights, hailed boys and girls from all over the village to come to the road, where bags of candy, cookie, balloon and water were handed ou t by Santa and the Tree’s, happy princesses and helpers. Mr. Fuentes worked tirelessly securing donations, organizing; packaging treats for the kids’, making decorations, building and decorating the dancing tree and decorating the floats. The parade offered an opportunity to introduce the community to the new fire truck, which carried two Santa’s look alike’s. Mr Fuentes thank’s all the donors, and volunteers, who helped made this second annual event successful. A follow through. resolution is a promise to yourself to do something different, whether 7. Choose a resolution that is important to you. If it doesn't mean it is to quit smoking, lose weight or much, then it is likely you will not follow through. go back to school. Here are some tips to stick to your "resolution". 8. Visualize your goal. See yourself in the future and how you will feel once you have achieved what you set out to do. Visualization is 1. Don't make it impossible. If you a strong motivator for most people. plan to lose weight, set a reasonable goal, perhaps 1 pound per week A New Year's resolution does not have to be undertaken on New until you reach your goal. In other Year's Eve. It can be any day of the year. All you need to do is to words, make it something that you can actually achieve. make a solid promise to yourself that you will achieve a goal within a set time frame. If you need to, write a letter to yourself and 2. Don't punish yourself for any transgressions. Everyone slides off outline the pros of reaching your goal. Keep these tips in mind to the rails occasionally, that is why we are human and not help you decide on a goal and stick to it superheroes. No one is perfect and the sooner you stop beating yourself up, the sooner you can get on with your goals. 3. Enlist a friend who has the same resolution as you. Work together on a buddy system to keep each other in check. Be supportive and seek support, two heads are better than one. 4. Keep a journal to track your progress. Write down your thoughts each day about how you are feeling and the steps you have taken to reach your ultimate goal. 5. Reward yourself. Set mini-goals and when you reach those, reward yourself with something great. It could be a day at the spa, a day out with friends, whatever it is that you like to do. Don't reward yourself with something that is not in line with your resolution. This means if you are trying to lose weight, don't reward yourself with a giant piece of cheesecake. Buy yourself a piece of clothing instead. 6. Don't make more than one resolution. If you have too many, it will be a recipe for disaster and disappointment. There are many things you can do to fall asleep * Herbal remedies that can help include valerian root, kava tea, more easily, but this article will focus on a few simple, quick fixes suntheanine, passion flower and melatonin (technically a hor- that'll nudge your body into slumber mode when you're already in mone). If you can't make the room pitch black (cover the digital alarm clock, obscure any light coming in through the windows or door) then use a blindfold (preferably dark and thick). Your body is more receptive to sleep when it's dark. 3.Keep it quiet. Background noise is fine, if it's the kind of back- ground noise you don't even notice. But any other kind of noise should be stopped, if possible. 4.Recreate boredom. This varies from person to person, but what- ever that activity is, it should lull your brain, not engage it. Slow, calming music lends itself well to this. Reading something that is completely uninteresting to you is good as well. Some types of puzzles or games may work as well, such as sudoku or solitaire. 5.Perform breathing exercises. Inhale and count the seconds, then exhale double that amount. So if you inhale for 4, exhale for 8 full seconds. This slows your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure -- so don't do this one if you have low blood pressure. 6.Try to visualize something relaxing and repetitive. For example, small, warm waves washing over your body at regular intervals to coincide with your breathing. 7.Try using an Environmental Air System air filter). Then start from your toes back up your body until you get back to your hands. Before you know it, your body will be relaxed and ready for sleep. Tips * Practice a little non-attachment. In other words, don't stress out about falling asleep, thinking "I have to sleep now or else..." This creates anxiety that prevents sleep. Instead, be laid back about it: "It'd be great to sleep right now, but if I don't, no big deal. At least I'll get some rest, and have a chance to relax." * If you must often sleep in a room that cannot be entirely dark- ened, an eye shade can help you sleep better.
