					              Professional Development at AEA 267
Professional Development (PD) Learning Opportunities at AEA 267 provide
direction for designing a professional development experience that ensures
educators acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to improve classroom
instruction so that students potentially are achieving at higher levels. Our belief is
that professional development must be results-driven, standards-based, and job-
embedded. With that belief in mind, AEA 267 has structured professional
development learning opportunities to meet that belief. Offerings are provided
through the following venues:
 Self selected courses whereby the participant can garner relicensure
credit or graduate credit from any of our three partner institutions
 In-district professional development that is aligned to identified student
        needs
 Centralized professional development where a district sends in a
leadership team with the intent to learn the material and provide that
information back to the local district.
 AEA 267 required professional development credit which certified staff
must take as part of contractual requirements and/or may take as part of
        the Iowa Teacher Quality legislation

All professional development at AEA 267 follows the Iowa Professional
Development Model if relicensure credit, graduate credit or AEA 267 PD credit is
attached to the learning opportunity. Guidance is provided by the Bureau of
Educational Examiners (BOEE).

 It is supported by research.
 It is supported by need derived from analysis of the data.
 It has potential for addressing additional identified student-learning needs
       (math, science, reading, technology, culture/climate).
 It has potential for impacting student-learning goals such as collaborative
worker, effective communicators, information processors, responsible
       citizen, etc.
    Offered over time.
 Includes implementation and student impact data collection.
 Follow-up meetings are required to share that data.

Selecting Content

Determine if the content fits with agency goals and resources. Describe the content
to be studied. Read the studies and select one or two studies that support the
practices/strategies that you will be teaching during the learning opportunities in
professional development.

Checklist

   1. Does the content fit with agency goals and resources?

   2. What was the research question? Were the authors trying to solve the
              same problem we are?

   3. What were the results of the study? Were they reported in Effect
Sizes? If not, how were they reported? Did the intervention benefit the
sample studied? In your opinion, were the benefits substantial? Why?

   4. Compare and contrast the sample studied with our student population.
Has this intervention benefited other students in previous studies?

   5. Is this intervention practical for our staff?
