					Qualities of English teacher and learner
Task 1 - List 5 qualities that a ‘good’ teacher should have and give reasons for your choices. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why? The 5 most important qualities that a good teacher should have are mentioned below: i- Love Teaching We must love what we are doing. If we do not like what we are doing then it is impossible to get desireable results. We will soon get bored of teaching if the love for teaching is not there. Therefore, only those people should come in this field who really love teaching. ii- Kind and Patience A good teacher should be able to sit patiently with a frustrated student and explain him/her kindly the solution of a problem or how to go about completing an assignment. Sometimes a student does not understand simple explanation of a lesson, therefore a good teacher should be patient and kind enough to explain the things unless he/she is satisfied. iii- Deep knowledge of the subject Good teachers should possess a deep knowledge of the subject they teach and are able to manipulate and make simpler the teaching material because they are a master of it. These teachers should have a passion for the subject and they should be able to explain complicated and confusing information in a way that makes it understandable for the students. students are dependent on teachers, they believe what teachers say and write, therefore it is most important aspect of teaching that teachers should have good command on the subject they are teaching. iv- Able to motivate students Sometimes students are discourage to learn by different problems encountered during their studies. These problems could be related to difficulty in learning grammatical rules or pronounciation. In such a situation a good teacher will always motivate them through various ways e.g. they could be motivated to work hard if they realize the importance and results of hard work .

v- Involve equally all the students throughout the lesson A good teacher will envolve all the students from begininng till the end of the lesson. This quality demands other qualities to be built in a teacher. In order to gain the involvement of the students, the teacher should have good sense of humour, can judge which students are getting bored during the lesson and should also know the weaknesses of the students. In my opinion first three qualities of a good teacher are most important. Love teaching is the first most quality to enter in the field of teaching because without love you can not excel in any field. It is just like a mother witout love can not take care of her children, same is the case with teaching. A good teacher should always be patient and kind. Teaching students is a long-term process and require patience and kindness to achieve desirable results. A teacher without good knowledge of the subject is like a tree without fruit. Therefore the students can really benefit from the teaching and guidance of the teacher, if a teacher is knowledgeable. Task 2 - State what you consider to be the five most important roles of a teacher. Describe each role and say why you think it is important. The five most important roles of a teacher are described below: i- Organizer This is the most important role of the teacher. In the classroom involves the careful organization of tasks and activities that the learners are to be engaged in, direct the learners in the roles and tasks they will undertake, to tell the students exactly what they need to do and how they should do it. If this role is not done properly then there will be chaos in the classroom. ii. Assessor A good teacher is always a good assessor. The students wants to know where they stand in the process of learning and what are their weaknesses, so that they can overcome them in future. A teacher could be able to assess the students on the basis of their performances in the classroom and give them feedback. iii. Tutor Tutoring implies a more personal role for the teacher. This role should be carefully handled in the classroom, so that equal attention is given to all students. It is important to give individual attention where required, guidance and helping students to learn more efficiently.

iv. Facilitator Sometimes the teacher has to act as a facilitator to encourage students to communicate with each other. The facilitator should be skilled in evoking participation and creativity, releases blocks to the process and adapts to the changing situation. A facilitator should ask rather than telling, pay personal compliments, listen without interrupting, ask for other's opinions rather than always having to offer his/her own and act like a counsellor rather than a sergeant. v. Observer The role of a teacher as a observer is very important in judging the progress of the students. while observing the progress of the students, it is important to keep a distance. The teacher should observe how the students work in groups and individually. This will be very helpful in removing the weaknesses of the students. The teacher has to play different roles according to the situation he/she faces during the course of a lesson. Some stages of a lesson require teacher to be more dominant in the form of tutor or organizer. In other cases a teacher may act less dominent or leading like a facilitator or observer. A good teacher plays all these roles efficiently when required. Task 3 - List 5 qualities you would expect to find in a ‘good’ learner. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why? There are many qualities that a good learner should possess, but the 5 most important qualities that a good learner should possess are mentioned below: i. Desire to learn ii. Willingness to listen iii. Asking questions iv. Acceptance of error correction v. Ability of working out their own learning process and methods. The first three qualities mentioned above seem to me more important than others. The qualities like desire to learn, willingness to listen and asking questions are interrelated to each other. A learner could not be a good learner without these 3 qualities. Desire to learn is the essential quality for anybody to enter in the process of learning. As we know that desire of something give us the energy and ability to achieve it. After desire to learn comes the quality of willingness to listen. To learn a language it is important to listen what the teacher is saying. The prerequisite of

learning and understanding is listening. To progress in any field especially in the field of language is only possible through asking questions. Therefore to enter in the process of learning, maintain existence in the process and to make progress in the learning require desire to learn, willingness to listen and willing to ask questions. Task 4 - What are some of the major differences you would expect to find between adult and young learners? Task 5 - List the levels of language ability that learners are often grouped into and give a brief summation of each level:

The learners of language can be grouped into 6 levels. i- Beginners Have no knowledge of language or have very basic knowledge. The students in this group require especial attention and guidance. ii- Elementary At this level students can make simple sentences and their communication is limited. iii- Pre-intermediate The students at this level can understand and communicate on different topics but lack in fluency and in-depth knowledge of the language. They have the tendency of making errors in the simple language structure. iv- Intermediate The students at this level can understand and communicate on various topics with their limited vocabulary. They are lacking in fluency and accuracy. v- Upper-intermediate The students at this level can communicate almost all topics with wide range of vocabulary and understanding. However, they still lack accuracy. vi- Advanced Students at this level have very good knowledge of the english language and can communicate fluently. At this level, they learn more advance and complicated aspects of language. Task 6 - Give as many reasons as possible why students are motivated to study English. The reasons that you give do not have to be in the unit reading material. Following are some of the reasons why students are motivated to study english: 1. Learning english language gives a wider understanding of world affairs. 2. Language learning promotes equal opportunities. 3. English is a global language, therefore it keep you in contact with rest of the world. 4. Learning english language is one of the requirements of the citizenship/residential permit of english speaking countries. 5. English language learning makes traveling easier, more enjoyable and more

enlightening. 6. English language helps to make friends all over the world. 7. It helps you to become a translator. 8. In some countries Learning english language is a matter of honour and pride. 9. Some people want to Learn english to built better relationship with their international business partners. 10.
