					I: She had the ^operating room ready .. in f-

     ten ^minutes,

     and they opened her uh--

     woman ^up,

     and they .. ^caught the bleeding `tube,

     and .. she uh was uh sewed up to^gether,

     and .. was uh uh `cured all ^right.

     And I ^saw it `happen,

     right ^there,

     under my ^eyes.

L: Mhm (3 secs)

     Yeah that ^could have killed,

     [the woman right a^way.]

I: [Oh it ^would‟ve killed] her,

L: M[[hm]]

I:     [[if]] she hadn‟t been taken ^in.

L: Mhm

I: And if they hadn‟t known what to ^do.

L: Mhm

I: Yeah.

     Well so ^my experience with `UNRA was very .. re--

     bene`ficial for ^me.

     I `learned a great ^deal.

                                                          1
L: Mhm

     That was ^after the war,

I: After the ^war.

L: with the--

     against Japa^nese.

I: ^Thirty--

     ^Forty--

     f- ^forty--

L: That should be uh [^forty--]

I: [Japanese] came in in thirty-^seven,

     this is .. forty-^eight.

     forty s--

     forty--

     forty-^six.

L: Forty-^six.

I: Forty-^[six.]

L:               [U]huh

I: The war was ^over,

L: Mhm

I: and I went to uh--

     went down to the--

     `Winnie had applied at the .. ^UNRA office,

L: [Mhm]

                                                                 2
I: [United] Nations .. Relief and Rehabili^tation,

L: M[hm]

      [in] ^Washington,

   and been ac^cepted,

   and they were ready to send ^her off to `China,

   and then I--

   I went down to see the .. chief nurse in ^Washington,

   and ^that‟s when `she said,

   you ^know,

   you‟re going to ^China,

   you‟re `working `under the United ^Nations,

   <MRC `not `under `any `other `organi^zation. MRC>

   Your ex^perience,

   and your `knowledge of the ^language,

   will be ^helpful,

   but re`member ^that.

   And I said yes ^mum.

   But,

L: [@]

I: [@] I ^got there,

   first `thing was to be sent to ^(TN),

   uh uh first t- t- to (T^S),

   and they said to ^(TN),

                                                           3
   and I went to ^TN,

   went by ^train,

   and .. ^got there

   and there was ^Winnie,

   and she had the .. place all ^organized,

   and .. I worked with Doctor Terry ^there yeah.

L: Mhm

I: For the rest of the ^year,

   and then I went back to the .. (TG) ^hospital.

   Forty-^seven,

   forty-^eight.

   Then forty-`eight the .. ^Communists were coming in,

   they had a ba--

   were going to have a `battle right ^there,

   and uh,

   we had--

   the .. ^hospital had been `organized for quite a `while,

   if there--

   if the--

   comes to a final ^thing,

   we‟ll all move to (T^F).

   And they had the same--

   that same place where they--

                                                              4
uh uh ^UNRA,

uh the Y Y YWC^A place,

and we had hospital ^beds there,

and we had hospital ^things there,

and we all `went ^there.

And after several ^days,

it seemed as though that was ^not a,

permanent so^lution.

We couldn‟t ^stay there.

Oh (JS) was `just as .. ^pig-headed as he‟d `ever been.

He said he‟d ^never leave,

but of course he ^did,

after a while he ^left.

But,

in the ^meantime,

uh the Am--

A^merica board,

sent a plane to ^get us.

Now it was only ^me,

they didn‟t know it was just ^one that was `coming.

But,

uh, the--

the uh ^Lutherans had a special plane,

                                                          5
   and we went--

   ^Lutheran plane came,

   and ^I got on,

   and uh there was nobody else to ^come,

   so,

   w--

   took--

   took s--

   took--

   ^baby organ,

   took this and ^that,

   and went out--

   out to Bei^jing.

   And that‟s when I waited--

   waited for the--

   for the .. ^Unicef,

   uh ER^C.

   Uh ^course to start.

L: I ^see.

   Um, before the Japanese ^came,

I: No no.

L: Uh yes,

   this is ^after the war.

                                            6
I: Oh [this is after the ^war.]

L:      [I meant uh--]

     before thirty-^seven--

     you worked from thirty-^three,

     to thirty-^seven,

I: Yes.

L: at uh (JN)

I: Yeah [I was--]

L:         [Right uh]

I: um

L: Uh you were ^teaching there.

I: I [was in] the school of ^nursing,

L:    [Right.]

     Mhm

I: ^teaching,

     and looking after the girl--

     girl ^students.

L: Uhuh

     Uh was that um school of nursing `inside the ^hospital.

I: Oh yes,

     yes [yes.]

L:      [Oh I] see.

I: Uh they--

                                                               7
     the ^girls,

     stayed in the--

     up- up^stairs of the--

     the `woman‟s ^end.

     [Men at] ^one end,

L: [Mhm]

I: and women at the ^other.

L: Mhm

I: And the second--

     second floor at this ^end,

L: M[hm]

        [the] nurses--

     we all lived up^stairs there

L: Mhm

I: And uh,

     I‟d been .. (GE)

     [I was just doing] volun^teer work.

L: [Mhm mhm]

     M[[hm]]

I:     [[The]] board hadn‟t ap^pointed me.

L: Mhm

I: And I did that for three ^years,

L: Mhm

                                             8
I: and then ^finally,

   this--

   summer of thirty-^seven,

   they--

   they .. ^wrote saying,

   we can .. take you ^on as a--

   as a .. regular board ^member,

L: Mhm

I: so I got `sent to Bei`jing to go to ^language school,

   I‟d never been to ^language school.

L: Mhm

I: I‟d ^studied,

   characters and things at ^home,

L: [Mhm]

I: [under] a Chinese ^teacher but,

   went to Bei^jing and .. had a,

   uh <@ ^crash course, @>

   uh th- one ^week,

   uh a whole seme--

   a whole ^term,

   another ^week,

   another ^term,

   another ^week,

                                                           9
     another ^term,

     and ^then,

     uh one of the--

     a .. Miss (W),

     who had ^also come from `(TG),

     she came saying <F we must go back ^quickly,

     uh things are happening ^here, F>

L: Mhm

I: and that‟s when the--

     (LC) &

L: Mhm [mhm]

I:       & [^incident,]

     yeah.

L: Oh.

     [I see.]

I: [And we] try--

     and there were two--

     two student ^nurses,

     who were coming from--

     uh from .. the Beijing ^area,

     and they came with ^us,

     and we drag--

     couldn‟t get the ^train,

                                                    10
   from .. Beijing it wasn‟t rus--

   running ^south,

   we went by ^donkey back,

   all the way out--

    no no we went on a ^train,

   all the way .. to the--

   uh to the .. ^coal mines,

   in the--

   in the .. western ^hills.

   And ^then we went,

   by ^donkey,

   back that--

   and ^got to,

   where the ^train was uncon--

   ^this side.

   See it went--

   didn‟t r--

   didn‟t run to Bei^jing,

   but .. it ran up ^this far,

L: Mhm

I: and then we went on the ^train,

   back to--

   back to (SS). (3 secs)

                                     11
L: [I see.]

I: [So ^that] time I was a,

   full-fledged ^missionary,

   I‟d been sor--

   supported by the ^board. @

L: @ Oh ^I see.

   So from thirty-^seven,

   to forty-^one,

   you were ^working,

   while the `Japenese was uh ^supervising--

   well--

I: Yeah.

L: w--

   occupied the ^area,

   right?

I: Well they ^came in,

   in the .. ^fall of thirty-`seven,

L: Mhm

I: see they .. started up ^north,

   and then they--

   took them a while to get down to ^(SS),

L: Mhm

I: and,

                                               12
   the--

   the day they ar^rived,

   the--

   that ^morning,

   uh,

   I didn‟t ^look,

   but--

   but uh,

   @@ (J^L),

   one of the--

   one of the graduate ^nurses,

   rushed and looked out the ^window,

   and there were .. Chinese ^soldiers,

   probably from the ^south,

   grast--

   grast-

   grass uh ^slippers,

L: [Mhm]

I: [and],

   one--

   th- thin ^clothes,

L: Mhm

I: (???) right past the ^hospital,

                                          13
     and then after a couple of hours she went and looked a^gain,

     and there were Japanese ^soldiers,

     with their ^helmets,

     and their ^guns,

     and their .. woolen .. ^uniforms,

     (???) same--

     same ^road.

     And then that ^night,

     the--

     the--

     uh Chinese as they ^left,

     had--

     had uh,

     spoiled the electric ^light plan,

     so that it [wouldn‟t ^work,]

L:             [Mhm mhm]

I: for the Japa^nese.

     But we hadn‟t--

     weren‟t pre^pared for it,

     we <@didn‟t@>--

     didn‟t have anything but just two ^lanterns,

     one in the men‟s--

     ^men‟s wards,

                                                                    14
   and one in the ^women‟s.

   And so,

   these--

   the nurses on ^duty,

   each one had a ^lantern,

   but the rest of us didn‟t have ^any,

   so I s--

   the nurse s--

   as the ^students were .. scurrying around,&

   &<F what are you ^doing? F>

   <HI Well we‟re getting ready to ^leave. HI>

   We‟re not going ^anywhere--

   staying right ^here.

   So I‟m going to ^bed,

   there‟s nothing else to ^do.

   So ^I went to `bed,

   slept <@soundly all night long.@>

L: Mhm

I: I was <@very .. easy to ^sleep.@>

   And I went back ^home t--

   next ^morning,

   and ^Mama said,

   “How ^was it?”

                                                 15
Said “oh it was all ^right,

slept all ^night.”

Oh,

we had a ^very active `night.

Because the ^mission compound,

there uh uh--

^big gate here,

a gate uh going out the ^(BL) school,

a gate out of the ^woman‟s school,

a gate somewhere at the ^(KB)‟s house,

and at ^every door,

there were .. ^Japanese,

wanting to come ^in.

Because they were being ^billeted,

in the .. local--

homes of local ^people,

had to have some place to ^sleep.

^And of course,

the ^first thing they wanted,

was a `hot ^bath,

^next thing wanted is to g--

h--

find ^girls.

                                         16
   And,

L: Hm

I: the ^families,

   they--

   the men wrestled around and tried to fix .. ha--

   heat water for a ^bath,

   but,

   they didn‟t want the--

   their women and ^children around.

   So,

   w--

   daughters and granddaughter--&

   &and .. `daughters-in-law and ^wives,

   and so,

   they .. heisted them over the ^wall,

   into our ^yard,

   they said you‟ll be ^safe `there.

   And they .. threw over some ^bedding,

   and some ^food.

   So that was ^it.

   And so from ^then on,

   we had a .. refugee .. popu^lation,

   women and ^children,

                                                      17
women and ^children,

women and ^children.

And,

the--

started--@@

children .. ^chasing each other round the yard,

making a ^rouse,

and,

got to keep them .. ^busy,

and keep them ^quiet.

So they started having ^school.

Now there were a few of the ^teachers were still there,

women--

women ^school teachers,

and,

they--

they uh,

taught--

they had--

had .. ^school in the--

in the (BL) school y--

uh ^building,

it had a big y--

                                                          18
a big uh--

uh was uh--

w- was--

had ^benches,

and a great big ^room,

and ist--

uh ^kids were there,

and they didn‟t--

couldn‟t use any--

uh didn‟t have any ^textbooks for them,

they,

had uh,

s- as I said we didn‟t have .. ^nationalist textbooks,

we didn‟t have `Japa^nese textbooks,

but we had the ^Bible.

So,

a whole ^winter,

of `teaching ^Bible,

to the ^student--

to the uh ^children,

`and to the `women ^too.

Teaching the ^Bible.

And so it was a ^wonderful chance,

                                                         19
     for .. e^vangelism.

     Un--

     Among our `own ^neighbors,

     living `right a^round us. (4 secs)

     Un course ^my job,

     was to keep the nurses ^busy,

     so they ^wouldn‟t .. uh,

     be .. uh too dis^turbed by the,

     propo^sition.

     That [Japa]nese didn‟t come in the ^yard,

L:         [Mhm]

     Mhm

I: that ^once in a while they‟d come but always,

     po^litely,

     ^knocking at the door,

     and asking to come ^in.

     And so that‟s what‟s--

     uh,

     we--

     we didn‟t play ^basketball,

     I don‟t ^think.

     Because that would be too ^noisy.

     But a--

                                                   20
   a--

   the--

   we did a lot of ^singing,

   and a lot of ^sewing,

L: Mhm

I: when they were off ^duty,

   we--

   I had--

   I had bought uh ^patterns from--

   from Bei^jing,

   when I was ^there,

   ^cross-stitch patterns,

   and uh uh ya--

   and ^thread,

   uh good fa--

   not--

   thread that wouldn‟t ^run,

   and a lot of the ^students,

   knew how to `do .. ^cross-stitch,

   and they did cross-stitch ^tablecloths,

   and they did--

   and then we made .. ^appliqué .. pictures,

   for the .. ^children‟s ward,

                                                21
and uh,

great big .. uh .. ^appliqué,

in the ^middle of the,

ma^ternity ward,

great big .. red .. uh ^(F) character,

in front of--

or was it a ^(S) character,

on the .. ma^ternity ward,

^beds.

So they ^all,

kept very--

kept ^busy,

and ^happy.

And ^also,

soon as the Japa^nese came in,

^suddenly,

we needed co--

^fuel,

we needed ^food,

and they--

two Chi^nese doctors,

Doctor (T) and Doctor--

Doctor uh uh ^(M),

                                         22
   said to Doctor ^Wilbur,

   Now,

   we can‟t go out^side,

   we‟re Chi^nese,

   <F but you can ^go, F>

   go and get us ^coal,

   from ^(MS).

   (MS)‟s school had ^moved,

   to--

   to west ^China,

L: Mhm

I: but they had already bought their ^coal,

   for the ^winter,

L: Mhm

I: So,

   doctor went and they--

   hospital borrowed a- a ^cart,

   ^mule,

   and ^driver,

L: Mhm

I: and Doctor Wilbur went every ^day,

   over to (M^S),

   to get ^coal,

                                              23
and my mother and ^daddy,

took ^turns,

going to go--

(M^S),

to get ^coal `too,

bring it ^back,

so that the--

uh uh .. people in the ^other yard,

would have c--

some ^coal to `burn.

And,

then after they‟d gotten enough ^coal,

then,

said now we need ^food.

We‟d always just bought our `flour in `bags from the ^city,

but we couldn‟t do ^that anymore,

clo--

„cause everything was ^closed.

So,

there a^gain,

it was ar^ranged,

and Doctor ^Wilbur would go `out,

with a `cart and a ^driver,

                                                              24
and,

go to ^villages,

and get .. ^wheat,

from--

from ^farmers.

They had it saved ^up.

And,

get ^wheat from--

uh uh uh uh--

get uh--

and they had--

they--

and they ^borrowed a--

uh a ^mill,

you ^know,

^grind it,

^round,

and ^round,

and ^round,

and ^round.

And,

one of the ^jobs,

that the nurses could ^do,

                             25
   was to .. ^supervise the,

   the ^grinding.

   And so I had--

   was organized--

   `half a day for ^each of us,

   I did ^my half day,

   along with the ^rest of them,

   you ^pour in the wheat at the top,

   and it comes ^grinding,

   ^grinding--

   comes ^out,

   and then you .. ^dump it in again,

   `seven ^times it gets ground.

   ^Good,

   ^stone ground,

   ^flour.

   That--

   [that]--

L: [Hm]

I: in A^merica that‟s considered,

   very ^elegant.

L: [Mhm]

I: [`Stoneground] ^flour.

                                        26
   And,

   So `that‟s what we had to ^eat.

   They ^flour from that,

   and then they brought ^millet also,

   from the--

   from the ^villages.

   Uh from the ^farmers.

   So,

   Doctor ^Wilbur--

   that‟s why--

   said that doctor w--

   that little boy that ^yelled,

   [Unca Wilbur]&

L: [Mhm mhm]

I: &Grandpa ^Wilbur,

   Grandpa ^Wilbur.

   He didn‟t n--

   didn‟t really ^know Doctor `Wilbur,

   but he .. ^heard,

   that he‟s the one that keeps us ^safe.

L: I see.@ (4 secs)

   So ^that was,

   how many ^years,

                                            27
     thirty-^seven,

     to forty-^one?

I: Yeah [tuz--]

L:          [Four] ^years.

I: Well,

     thirty-`seven in the ^winter,

     to forty-one in the--

     in the ^spring.

L: Mhm

I: And uh,

     then when we ^left,

     there were--

     ordered to--

     to--

     um … had to go in the--

     we called in the (X),

     see the ^magistrate,

     you want to ^go,

     and we said no we ^don‟t want to go.

     But then the ^next day,

     an ^order came.

     To the ^hospital.

     Have your three (X),

                                            28
   they didn‟t say (X),

L: Oh,

   [I see.]

I: [Uh .. have] your ^three,

   uh … uh,

L: Me.

I: re--

   g--

   ^leave the `province.

L: Mhm

I: So,

   that‟s why ^Winnie and,

   Miss ^(X) and I,

   left (TG).

   And went--

   w- went on that ^trip,

   [down to--]

L: [Mhm]

   down to the--

   uh (X),

   down to ^Shanghai. (8 secs)

L: Well,

   would you like to take a ^rest?

                                     29
I: Okay uh-- (4 secs)

     forty-^eight,

     forty-^nine,

     no.

L: So you bore them in Bei^jing,

     in forty-^eight,

     or forty-^nine?

I: I‟m trying to ^think,

     yeah,

     ^some[thing] like `that.

L:           [Mhm]

     Mhm

I: Uh,

     when did the--

     when w--

     ^waiting for the,

     ^midwifery course to open,

     um, (8 secs)

     Forty-^nine,

     I [^guess,]

L:    [Mhm]

I: forty-^nine.

L: Okay.

                                   30
I: The--

    uh … ^Japanese had left,

    the uh .. Ko^rean war,

    hadn‟t quite ^started yet,

L: Mhm

I: And, (5 secs)

L: But in--

    that must be under the--

    the Communist ^government,

    right,

    [the People‟s Republic of ^China.]

I: [Yes that‟s so,

                     Communist ^government.]

L: Mhm

I: Well the--

    the .. government hadn‟t ^really,

    of^ficially `started yet,

    but there were--

L: [Mhm]

I: [like sort] of a--

    a ^group.

L: Mhm

I: Uh supposed to have ^other people in,

                                               31
   not just ^Communists.

L: Mhm (4 secs)

I: Now this is (X) here,

L: Mhm

I: must be a`nother little `envelope ^somewhere.

L: Mhm,

   yeah. (2 secs)

   Do you remember ^anything,

   um,

   while you were growing ^up,

   in (TG),

I: Yes.

L: Mhm (4 secs)

I: Well,

   once in a ^while,

   my ^daddy,

   always wanted someone to go a^long with him,

   when he went--

   when he went on--

   on .. uh outpatient ^calls.

L: Mhm

I: And,

   when I was in-- (2 secs)

                                                   32
   not when I was ^small,

   but when I was in .. school in ^(TJ),

   in the ^summer,

L: [Mhm]

I: [And he‟d] go--

   go to the--

   visit one of the .. ^(C) family,

   ^rich family that lived--

   ten--

   ten (L) away.

   And uh,

   he .. rode a ^bicycle,

   and ^I rode a bicycle,

   and then we ^got there,

   and `he went to see the ^patient,

   and `I‟d stay where the ^women were.

   And I remember ^that,

   they were--

   I was ^always feeling very em`barrassed.

L: Mhm

I: Uh,

   as long as I was a ^child,

L: Mhm

                                              33
I: when I was in A^merica,

   I was from ^China,

   when I was in ^China,

   I was an A^merican,

   and it never really--

   it always ^bothered me,

   never really quite ^right.

L: Mhm

I: But after I was--

   ^worked there,

   I- I suddenly didn‟t ^mind,

   it didn‟t mind ^either,

   I was--

   I was both, (7 secs) (rustling)

   I belong ^both places,

L: Mhm

I: ^before that,

   I had felt I didn‟t belong ^either place,

L: Mhm

I: but after ^that,

   I felt as though I be^longed.

L: [Well ^good.]

I: [It was n--]

                                               34
     It was a .. much more pleasant ^feeling.

L: Mhm (3 secs)

     Did you in^terpret for your dad,

     or .. did you just uh .. go as a .. com[^panion?]

I: [No no] just going on a--

     ^company for him.

L: Oh I see. (3 secs)

I: He was a very .. ^sociable person,

     he liked to have somebody a^round.

     [Here] I ^found it.

L: [Mhm]

     Mhm (6 secs)

I: Now as I ^say,

     I don‟t remember the ^story,

     well enough to be able to ^tell it.

L: Mhm

I: But uh, (3 secs)

     Here‟s (X) with his,

L: Mhm

I: with the--

     uh uh he was .. sent up to the ^north,

     as a--

     as an ^emissary,

                                                                       35
   and,

   then they didn‟t let him go ^back to s--

   ^back,

   to--

   to--

   to the ^capital,

L: Mhm

I: and,

   uh,

   they said he--

   ^have him there to be--

   to look ^after those--

   those .. ^sheep.

   Said as soon as the--

   you can ^go,

   as soon as the .. uh uh baby ^lambs are born.

   After a ^while,

   he discovered they were all ^male,

   so there ^were no baby lambs,

   which meant he had to ^stay,

   and ^stay,

   and ^stay,

   and ^stay,

                                                   36
and,

^finally,

one ^dear,

when the ^ear after `year,

they--

he--

and he didn‟t get any ^message from--

from--

from--

the ^capital,

^asking for him,

and,

finally one ^day,

he saw the ^geese,

the ^geese,

that ^fly,

^north,

in the w--

and then the--

back ^south,

and he--

^one goose,

he managed to ^catch it,

                                        37
and they put a--

they put a uh--

they were going--

going ^south,

and he put a .. ^message,

on his ^leg saying,

“this is ^(S),

I‟m still ^here,

come and ^rescue me.”

And ^then,

after a ^while,

the ^geese got down to--

down to the--

to the uh--

to ^China,

and,

somebody ^shot a goose,

it had a--

had said something wobbling on its ^feet,

and they ^shot it,

and here was the ^message saying,

<HI I‟m ^(S),

I‟m still ^here,

                                            38
   don‟t--

   don‟t give ^up on me. HI>

   So they sent--

   went--

   sent an ^emissary up to--

   uh uh be^fore that they had sent,

   up to--

   to the .. uh (SN),

L: [Mhm]

I: [But they] .. never ^say,

   “well he‟s not ^here,

   he‟s not ^here,

   he‟s not ^here.

   Said he <F ^is there,

   we ^must have him `back. F>

   So he was .. taken ^back,

   by that ^time,

   he had gotten quite--

   quite eh- ^elderly,

   and uh,

   but he ^still was,

   considered a very .. important ^person,

   in the .. ^country.

                                             39
L: [Mhm]

I: [That‟s all] I re^member,

   [[A very]] sh--

L: [[Mhm]]

I: sh--

   <@ ab^breviated story. @>

L: Mhm (6 secs)

I: I‟m glad I ^found him.

L: Mhm.

   [Yes.]

I: [X]

   [[didn‟t]] get ^lost.

L: [[Uhuh]] (4 secs)

   When did your ^mother leave uh (TG).

I: Well,

   after--

   in nineteen-^forty,

   we‟d been to--

   to Bei^jing,

   ^Winnie was coming,

   and we ^went,

   to Bei^jing,

   to ^meet her.

                                          40
And,

on the ^way,

the--

uh,

(BL) had--

had jimmied the ^train,

so it .. wouldn‟t go ^through,

and we had to spend .. ^hours in (JN),

on the ^way,

^waiting for the `train,

from .. ^(AK) to come up,

and then ^that train was stopped `too,

they‟d been quite suc^cessful at--

at .. breaking up the ro--

^railroad,

and,

^finally,

we got to Bei^jing,

and--

and we got to ^(TJ),

and ^met her,

she came from--

from .. Ja^pan on a--

                                         41
on a little ^boat,

and came to ^(TJ).

And,

got to Bei^jing,

and ^then it was,

w--

how would we get back to ^(TG)?

The `railroad wasn‟t running ^through yet.

And,

^trouble was,

there was a^nother family there,

the ^Duttons,

they had a ^son in--

in ^(TJ),

in ^school,

and ^they didn‟t--

mothe--

Mrs. ^Dutton,

didn‟t really want to get back to ^(TG),

„cause she wanted to stay there near ^Frankie,

and,

w--

`I was very anxious to get ^back,

                                                 42
I had to get back to--

my--

the .. ^classes were supposed to be`gin,

eh s--

uh year--

year--

^year classes,

at the school of ^nursing,

and,

Mrs. ^Wilbur--

Doctor ^Wilbur had died,

and Mrs. ^Wilbur was pix--

a ^baby was being `born,

and ^wanted to be in for that,

and,

so,

^I thought,

^I wanted to go--

go down on the ^(HK) railroad,

and get ^off at,

(SF),

and ^go across,

^that way,

                                           43
   yes uh--

   a sq--

   a ^square.

L: Mhm

I: You can ^go,

   either ^this way,

   and like ^this,

   or up ^this way,

   and like ^this.

L: Mhm

I: And,

   we couldn‟t go on the ^railroad,

   ^that way,

   but we would go the ^other way,

   so we went--

   and--

   we didn‟t talk to ^many people,

   but we talked to one or ^two,

   and they said well there‟s some ^other people here,

   `they want to go ^too,

   people from the Church of ^Brethren,

   Mr. ^Wompitur,

   and Miss .. ^Somebody,

                                                         44
an--

^Oberg,

and ..^they wanted to get back to--

to--

to--

to--

to uh .. their ^stations,

so th--

^all the th--

Winnie and ^mother and I,

and the two of ^them,

and then there was a young .. ^teacher,

going to ^(FJ),

to teach in ^(FJ).

^He hadn‟t gotten `in.

So the ^six of us,

we went uh--

train down to ^(SD),

and got ^off,

and .. spent the ^night,

with the missionaries ^there,

and then,

^they hired,

                                          45
^donkeys for us,

to go a^cross,

to the ^mountains.

And the--

Mr. ^Dutton who kept saying,

but when you get .. from .. ^Japanese territory,

into .. ^Communist,

and then ^Communist,

into Japa^nese,

you‟ll get into ^trouble,

one--

one way or the ^other.

But we w--

we said we‟ll get ^through.

And so we .. went from ^(SF),

we started a^cross,

we got to the .. edge of the Japanese ^territory,

and the ^man there said,

<HI What do you want to ^go for? HI>

And Mr. W--

^Wompitur said,

I ^have to go,

„cause there are ^churches there,

                                                    46
  that need my ^leadership,

  Miss ^Oberg,

  we need her ^too,

  and then,

  Bob ^Longley said,

  and I need to go ^school,

  I‟m supposed to be ^teaching there,

  and I‟m not ^there yet.

  He turned to ^me.

  Well,

  I have to get ^back,

  there‟s schud--

  school of ^nursing running,

  the ^patients need attention,

  I must get ^back,

  Now how bout ^these,

  well this is my aged ^mother,

  (X),

  and my baby ^sister.

  ^Okay,

  can we all go.

  So we went ^through.

L: [Mhm]

                                        47
I: [<@ that] was no ^trouble for us. @>

L: Mhm

I: And then we went ^on up,

   and it was going ^up the mountains,

L: Mhm

I: ^up up up,

   and you had to .. cross the little .. ^stream,

L: Mhm

I: ^over,

   and ^over,

   and ^over,

   and ^over,

   ^First we took off our `shoes,

L: [Mhm]

I: [^Momma] rode a `donkey,

   and the man--

   uh ma--

   the .. `donkey .. ^driver was very,

   (MR) (MR) (MR),

   and he‟d hold ^on to her,

   while we crossed the ^rivers.

   They--

   the ^streams.

                                                    48
     But the re--

     week--

     ^Winnie and I,

     ^first we took off our shoes and `socks,

     but ^then we decided to just .. `walk through,

     with the shoes ^on,

     so we `slap `slap `slap through the--

     through the ^water.

     And we had .. crossed that little stream a ^hundred times,

     going ^up--

     up the--

L: M[hm]

I:     [up] the s--

     uh uh ^valley.

     But it went ^up `up `up `up,

     and there were .. uh .. per^simmon trees.

L: Mhm

I: Now,

     per^simmons here,

     are [little] ^tiny things,

L:       [Mhm]

     Mhm mhm

I: well `those had all been .. ^grafted.

                                                                  49
     They‟d had--

     down in the--

     in the ^trunk,

     ^cut off,

     and a ^graft of the,

     (knocking) ^big per`simmons,

     put on ^there.

L: M[hm]

I: [So] they had ^big persimmons,

     like ^this.

L: Mhm

I: And the per^simmons were--

     the .. ^donkey driver‟d go,

     “(X)”,

     and get `down a per^simmon.

     But they were ^still very--

     weren‟t ready to ^eat yet.

L: Mhm

I: Uh uh ^gray,

     uh uh uh ^furry,

L: Mhm

I: had to be ^frozen first.

     Uh bu--

                                        50
     went down ^up `up `up `up.

     And it was almost ^straight up.

L: Mhm

I: These--

     uh .. the .. edge of ^(SS),

     is a .. ^very,

     pre`cipitous ^mountain,

     up--

     going ^up in the--

     and then ^gradually,

     down in the other [^side.]

L:                        [Mhm]

I: And on ^one side,

     the (HB) houses were like ^this.

     The `(SS) houses were like ^this,

     made ^different ways.

L: Mhm

I: And,

     we‟d stop in ^villages,

     and ^one village there was--

     there was (BS),

     great big ^celebration,

L: Mhm

                                         51
I: the--

   they were ^celebrating,

   partly the--

   the--

   the uy--

   eighth ^moon,

   uh the `wonderful big ^moon,

   but ^also,

   because the Japa^nese,

   we‟ve--

   we‟ve .. ^kept them--

   w--

   w--

   they had a ^rail,

   uh uh uh uh train ^rail,

   that they‟d tag ^all the way from--

   from wherever they‟d ^gotten it,

   and brought it ^up here,

   in the ^mountain.

   And ^then,

   it--

   we ^know it‟s true,

   „cause ^these people,

                                         52
   couldn‟t get--

   get ^through,

   that‟s why they‟re coming this ^way.

L: Mhm

I: So `there we ^were.

L: Mhm

I: And,

   the--

   they were a `good many uh uh .. Chinese ^soldiers there,

L: [Must be the Communists.]

I: [while we were X,]

L: Uhuh uhuh

I: and they‟d been .. uh uh mal^nourished,

   and their p--

   ^faces were pale,

   and they .. didn‟t have much ^energy,

   because they hadn‟t had proper n- nu^trition.

   And,

   we went ^on,

   and finally got down to a ^river valley,

   and followed that a long ^way,

   and while we were `walking in that ^river valley,

   a group of--

                                                              53
     of uh off--

     Chinese ^officers,

     came from the other di^rection,

     and,

     the very ^last one,

     looked at `Winnie and ^said something.

     He heard us talking ^English,

     and so he said something in ^English,

     and he‟d come from Hong ^Kong,

L: [Hm]

I: [he‟d--]

     or Indo^nesia or somewhere.

     He was an overseas Chi^nese,

     he‟d come to help the .. Chinese [uh uh] ^there.

L:                                     [Mhm]

     Mhm

I: And,

     they‟d been uh--

     but it was .. not ^time,

     his group was going the ^other way,

     and we were going ^this way,

     didn‟t have ^time,

     to really ^speak to each other,

                                                        54
     and we went ^on.

     And then ^later,

     when Winnie was down in that--

     in that ^(SD) area,

     when she was there with the--

     with the .. uh uh UNRA ^group,

L: Mhm

I: they met in uh uh a ^group,

     with some uh .. Chinese of^ficials,

     ^local ones,

     and one was that ^man.

     He said [do--]

L:           [Huh]

I: she said where were ^you,

     in the .. Oc^tober,

     ^nineteen what`ever it was,

     and he said .. <HI why I was in (TN) ^mountains. HI>

     Said so were ^we.

     Didn‟t we--

     didn‟t I--

     didn‟t we ^see you?

     <HI Yes they had seen each other ^there then HI>.

     ^That ti[me.]

                                                            55
L:            [M]hm

I: Well we went ^on,

     and we got .. to .. ^(PD),

     w--

     no to .. ^(LJ),

     where the--

     where the Wompu--

     Mr. Wompitur and Miss Oberg were going to ^stop.

SIDE 2

I: And we--

     we spent six ^days on the way,

     ^walking almost all the way.

     There were ^donkeys,

     so ^once in a while,

     Winnie and I would ^ride for a while,

     take ^turns,

     but .. uh .. the young ^teacher,

     going to ^(FJ),

     ^walked,

     he said I want to be able to tell my ^grandchildren,

     I `walked for six days ^straight,

     and they‟d say why didn‟t you ^ride?

(Both laugh)

                                                            56
   Well,

   just this ^year,

   I had a ^note from him.

   He‟s a ^doctor,

L: Mhm

I: works in .. ^someplace or other,

L: Mhm

I: ^Oregon or somewhere,

L: Mhm

I: and he said,

   we--

   did you happen to be in--

   in--

   in (SS) at ^such and such a time?

L: Mhm

I: Said ^yes yes,

   well I ^think,

   and said what happened to their other ^people?

   Are they still ^there?

   And so I .. wrote and ^told him about--

   `Winnie was ^here,

   and,

   `mother had ^died,

                                                    57
   and,

   after all how many years ^later,

L: [Mhm]

I: [And uh,]

   uh .. he ^asked about,

   one of the Oberlin ^teachers that was there,

   I told where--

   her--

   she‟s ^at.

   So,

   years ^later,

   we can get a .. a con^nection.

L: Mhm (3 secs)

I: Oh and we got ^back,

   to ^(TG),

   we didn‟t go into the ^city of course,

   the Japanese were ^there,

   but we .. ^stopped in the--

   oh--

   in the .. ^(HN),

   stayed with the .. s--

   ^teachers there,

   ^next warning went over to the `hospital,

                                                  58
   but ^first thing I asked,

   has Mrs. Wilbur had her ^baby yet?

   No she ^hasn‟t.

   I was ^so pleased,

   I hadn‟t ^missed that.

L: Mhm

I: And,

   uh,

   school clas--

   nadz--

   started--

   so we .. started the ^classes,

   and Mrs. Wilbur had her ^baby,

   and ^then,

   the next ^spring,

   the--

   the ^councilor,

   U.S. ^council,

   kept ^saying,

   women and children ^out,

   women and children ^out,

   women and children ^out,

   but .. Winnie had just ^gotten there,

                                           59
   ^she didn‟t want to `leave,

   but,

   they ^said,

   ^momma you‟d better go `home.

   You have ^Addy,

   and ^Alfred is there,

L: [Mhm]

I: [and he] needs you ^too,

   so,

   she ^left in--

   in the ^spring of fort--

   forty-`one.

   Now whatever this ^is,

   yeah,

   forty-^one yeah.

L: Mhm

I: So ^she wasn‟t `there,

   when uh .. Pearl ^Harbor came along.

L: Mhm (2 secs)

I: And she never went back to ^China.

L: Oh. (4 secs)

   It was ^wonderful,

   that you managed to come ^back,

                                          60
   to go back to ^China,

   ^after,

   the ^war,

I: Yeah.

L: the Japanese ^war.

I: Well,

   once with ^UNRA,

L: Mhm

I: once with ^UNICEF,

L: Mhm

I: and then the `(TG) `hospital in be^tween.

L: Mhm mhm (3 secs)

   Did you re^member,

   any of the ^patients,

   at the (TG) ^hospital.

I: Not the ^patients,

L: Mhm

I: ^workers I--

L: Mhm

I: yeah.

   ^Patients come and `go.

   Oh yes there was ^one patient,

L: Mhm

                                               61
I: uh ^(WS),

     the little .. jade ^fairy,

     who .. ^came with a--

L: Mhm

I: she had a .. uh uh dr--

     dripping ^wound from his,

     one ^hand,

L: Mhm

I: and,

     the,

     the uh--

     the ^rich family she‟d worked for,

     she was a little ^slavie,

L: Mhm

I: uh ^paid for her in the `hospital,

L: Mhm

I: and Dr. Wilbur ^operated,

     had to take off two ^fingers,

     [but] she‟d--

L: [Wa--]

I: the ^rest were still good,

L: What ^[hap]pened to her?

I:           [and,]

                                          62
     Uh she put a--

     they put--

     he put--

     well he didn‟t put the .. ^fingers on yet,

     but he--

     he .. put uh .. a .. sort of a ^cast on,

     with--

L: Mhm m[hm]

I:              [with] the .. ^medicine on it,

L: Mhm

I: and,

     she ka--

     and then,

     when the--

     when I had the ^children have a--

     a ^swat the flies--

     see who can .. p--

     ^swat the most flies,

     ^she could,

     „cause she could just ^stick her hand out,

     ^fine like this,

     they‟d all .. like the ^smell.

L: <@ Oh [uh]-- @>

                                                  63
I:           [And] so she‟d get--

     get a ^great many s--

     [uh ..] flies ^that way.

L: [Mhm]

     Mhm

I: Well,

     she stayed in the ^hospital,

     and he stayed--

     after two ^years,

     and the ^family said,

     we can‟t af^ford to s--

     ^keep her anymore in the `hospital.

     But Dr. ^Wilbur said,

     well we--

     we‟ll take her ^on,

     at free ^care.

     And so she ^stayed on,

     and ^stayed on,

     and she learned to ^read,

     she learned to ^sing songs,

     she learned to ^sew,

     she made herself a--

     you know those days they wore lo--

                                           64
   long ..&

L: Mhm

I: &dr- ^dresses,

   she made herself a long ^dress,

   and some of the ^nurses,

   spent ^time with her,

   and taught her how to .. ^do things,

   and,

   then jit--

   went from her--

   TB .. ^travels,

   it went from her ^hand,

   to her ^back,

   so she had TB of the ^spine.

L: Oh

I: And she had to lie on a,

L: Mhm

I: on a--

   on a--

   in a ^cast,

   for a long ^time,

L: Mhm

I: but ^that--

                                          65
     she kept sh--

     ^itch itch itch itch,

     ^itch itch itch itch itch,

     it was full of ^bedbugs,

     „n .. [kept] ^biting her.

L:          [Mhm]

     Mhm

I: So finally took the cast ^off,

     and,

     uh,

     oh Dr. ^Wilbur,

     had gotten her a .. ^brace,

L: Mhm

I: like she ^first had the trouble with her `back,

     and she ^wore that brace,

     and she could run around ^fast,

     doing ^everything,

     and then ^gradually,

     she got less and less ^label,

     and as `long as she could have the ^sunshine,

     in the ^summer,

L: Mhm

I: she‟d get ^better.

                                                     66
     Then the ^winter,

     she‟d get ^worse again.

     But she ^never was able,

     to ^quite over`come that.

     And,

     when the--

     when--

     after we had ^left,

     and when the hospital was--

     was ^burned,

     and when the s--

     city--

     hospital had to move into the ^city,

L: Uh [that was uh--]

I:       [they took her a^long,]

L: that was under the Japa^nese,

     ^ruling right? (3 secs)

I: I ^guess so.

L: Uhuh [okay]

I:            [Yeah I ^guess so.]

L: Mhm

I: And,

     then,

                                            67
   we got ^back,

   when it would--

   with--

   with ^UNICEF,

L: [Mhm]

I: [No with] ^UNRA,

L: Mhm

I: I got back in .. ^June I guess,

L: Mhm

I: and went--

   the very first thing I--

   ^job I had--

   of^ficial job was to .. (TG) hospital graduating three--

L: Mhm

I: three ^nurses.

L: Mhm

I: So I went down to ^(TG),

   went by ^train,

   there was a regular ^train,

L: Mhm

I: and,

   they said (WS) just died the day be^fore that.

   They‟d kept her going all those ^years,

                                                              68
L: Mhm

I: when ^they were hard up,

     they didn‟t have quite enough to ^eat,

     they said,

     as we said we had to ^scrape,

     the bottom of the--

     of the ^(G),

L: Mhm

I: to get e^nough,

     to uh ^eat.

L: M[hm]

I:     [And] divide it ^up.

L: M[[hm]]

I:     [[But]] they ^kept her,

     ^all that `time,

     looking ^after her.

L: Mhm

I: So ^she‟s the only `patient,

     that I .. ^knew anything a`bout.

L: What ^happened to her finger?

I: Well the ^finger was a minor `matter,

     the ^back was much more im`portant--

     I ^think,

                                              69
     f- ^finally,

     had to ^operate on it--

     take it ^off.

     But the [back] was much more--

L:           [Mhm]

I: you ^can‟t,

     cut your ^back off.

L: So,

     she had tuberco--

     tub--

     well T^B?

     [Tubercu]^losis.

I: [TB ^yes.]

     Tu^bercular--

     tis.

L: Mhm

     That was very ^nice of them,

     so they ^kept her there,

     for ^free,

I: Yeah.

L: all these ^years.

I: <MRC ^Year after `year [after] `year MRC>

L:                              [Mhm]

                                               70
     Did she have a ^family?

I: ^No no.

     Little ^slavies don‟t have--

     I mean he .. [^must‟ve,]

L:                   [Mhm]

I: ^given her to the--

L: Mhm [mhm]

I:            [^given] her to the ^landlord.

L: Mhm

     [Hm]

I: [And,]

     <`nobody of anybody ^fa[[mily]]>

L:                               [[Mhm]]

     And ^Winnie was there,

     uh supervising a ^kindergarten,

     right?

I: [Yeah.]

L: [Was] that a .. local Chi^nese kindergarten?

I: Well [[in the]] ^church.

L:          [[Or in--]]

     Oh in the [^church.]

I:                [Uh um--]

     F- forty--

                                                  71

W: It wasn‟t being ^used as a `church.

I: Well it was in the ^yard,

   it w- wasn‟t off a--

   out a--

   out in the ^village.

W: It wasn‟t in the--

   wasn‟t in the `compound where we ^lived though.

I: I don‟t re^member.

   It wasn‟t out in the ^village somewhere.

W: No.

   It was in the--

   It was at`tached to the ^hospital actually.

   I could go right ^through. (4 secs)

   That‟s (X.) (4 secs)

L: Okay uh

W: (X)

L: Oh ^no,

   no. (3 secs)

I: (TG) ^hospital,

   and .. ^UNICEF,

   Bei^jing,

   (TJ),

                                                     72
   and uh,

   ^midwifery group in--

   in--

   in ^church group in .. Peking ^City.

L: Mhm

I: Oh I‟m ^going--

   somebody asked did you have uh any un^pleasantness,

   under the Japa^nese.

   Well ^only,

   after the--

   what was this ^Japanese--

   no ka--

   ka--

   ^Communist `government.

   As we were ^leaving Beijing,

   uh we‟d gotten per^mission to--

   to ask to ^leave,

   and we were already to--

   in the .. ^railway station,

   and there were big ^signs saying,

   Mc^Arthur,

   Bei^jing,

   toward the (YL),

                                                         73
L: M[hm]

I:     [And] ^then,

     the in^spector came round,

L: Mhm

I: I- I opened up my--

     uh my t--

     uh ^trunk,

     and there was a--

     a uh a .. cer^tificate,

     saying I was a .. registered ^midwife,

     in--

     in Beijing ^City.

L: Mhm

I: And he said ^here,

     you don‟t ^need that.

     And he took it out--

     <HI O^kay,

     you gave it to ^me,

     you can take it ^back. HI>

     And then he went down to Mr. ^Galt,

     and Mr. Galt had a great big .. ^rubbing,

L: Mhm

I: of a--

                                                 74
     something from (PS).

L: Mhm

I: With a big (T) character,

L: Mhm mhm

I: and somebody ^leaning on it.

L: Mhm

I: (X)

     And the [ins^pec]tor said,

L:            [Uhuh]

     ^you know that‟s not `true.

     We don‟t .. depend on ^heaven to eat,

     you--

     you .. depend on “hard ^work,

     (LD).”

L: Mhm

I: He ^took it out,

     put it ^back.

     Well then he went ^on,

     Mr. ^Galt,

     picked it ^up,

     put it ^back <@in his truck,@>

L: Uhuh

I: Tha--

                                             75
   that was ^it.

L: Mhm

   Uh were you able to take back your .. cer^tificate.

   Were you able to take back your cer^tificate.

I: My what?

L: ^Registered,

   [^nurse,]

I: [No.]

   No,

   I didn‟t--

   I didn‟t ^want it.

   ^Midwifery I mean,

L: Uhuh

I: ^didn‟t mean any`thing,

   uba--

   cer^ficates in ma--

   ^midwife in Bei`jing.

   I mean,

   „cause we were ^teaching,

L: [Mhm]

I: [^teach]ing mid`wifery,

   so,

L: M[hm]

                                                         76
I:     [`that‟s] why we had cer^tificates.

     And they--

     minister of ^health,

     was a ^woman,

     very .. ^favorable to us,

     I think she was (FJ)‟s .. ^wife,

     name was .. Li ^something or other. (6 secs)

L: Yeah of ^course,

     she should--

     would .. under^stand,

     what you were ^doing.

I: Yeah

L: You were actually ^helping,

     all the Chi^nese.

I: Yeah. (2 secs)

     „Cause on--

     there‟d been a big ^celebration,

L: Mhm

I: May ^twelfth--

     May ^twelfth--

     Florence Nightingale‟s ^birthday,

     and it had been .. celebrated for ^years,

     [in .. ^hospitals,]

                                                    77
L: [Mhm mhm]

I: and so there was a big cele^bration,

    in Beijing ^City,

    and all the--

    all the ^health workers,

    uh ^midwives and `whatnot,

    were uh in^vited,

L: [Mhm]

I: [we were] `there for ^that. (12 secs)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~background noises throughout~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I   So in the (clears throat)--
    in the small ^area,
    near ^(TG),
L: Mhm
I: there‟s a .. ^festival,
    they call the `iron ^pole festival.
L: Mhm
I: (X)
L: Mhm
I: (X)
L: Oh.
I: And it ^has--
L: Mhm
                                                                      78
I: the--
     the--
     the ^origin of it is that,
     `many years a^go,
L: Mhm
I: the .. ^enemies came `down,
L: Mhm
I: from the ^north,
L: Mhm
I: and,
     they surrounded es--
     one of the ^cities,
L: M[hm]
I:     [And,]
     the ^people inside,
     couldn‟t get ^out,
     and they were ha--
     what in the `world‟ll we ^do,
     and ^then,
     ^some of the young `women,
     in the--
     in the com^munity,
L: Mhm
                                     79
I: said ^come.
     And they st- stood on one--
     ^one side of the city wall,
     and ^danced,
     and .. looked so at^tractive,
     waved their ^handkerchiefs,
     and all the .. ^enemy,
     came right to that ^side,
     while there were ^that side,
     the in^habitants,
     of the ^city,
     es^caped,
     from a different ^side.
L: M[hm]
I:     [So its--]
     `course the girls got ^raped probably,
     but the .. city was ^saved,
     the people r--
     other .. rep--
     in^habitants,
     were ^saved.
     Well,
     in--
                                              80
     in ^(TG),
     evry--
     evry--
     everyone--
     they didn‟t do it ^every year,
     but every ^once in a while,
     there‟d be a--
     have the (X).
L: M[hm]
I:     [And,]
     one ^year,
     uh .. people came to--
     came to uh--
     uh .. ^visit,
     ^neighbors of ours,
L: Mhm
I: and,
     they always said ^oh,
     ^come,
     w- we‟ll go visit (X).
     She‟s so (X),
     and she‟s so--
     you ^know she--
                                      81
she--
she likes ^people.
So,
I happened to ^be there,
and,
this (X) said,
have you--
have you come to see the .. iron ^pole festival?
<HI oh ^yes they said,
and this little girl was ^in it. HI>
There was a little ^girl,
about this ^big.
And .. what do you ^mean?
Yes ^yes,
she was up on the ^pole,
and they pulled up her ^pant leg,
to show where they‟d .. ^fastened her on,
with--
with uh .. very tight ^bandages,
and m--
and how did she ^stay?
well she ^stays on there,
and they lift her up ^high,
                                                   82
   and they ^dress her up in--
   in long ^clothes,
   ^she‟s way up in`side,
   but the ^clothes,
   would hang way ^down,
   and then she has ^handkerchief in her `hand,
   and she .. ^waves it like this,
   ^back and forth,
   and ^back and forth,
   and so that was the .. iron ^pole festival.
   And they had not only come to ^see it,
   but the--
   the little girl was ^in it.
L: [Hm]
I: [For] that year.
L: [[So that was--]]
I: [[I don‟t know]] whether that .. ^custom goes,
   very far a^way,
   but it--
L: Mhm
I: it was ^right,
   they .. ^celebrated it,
   in (TG) ^city.
                                                    83
L: So that was in ^memory,
     of those ^girls.
     ^Was it?
     Was it in ^memory,
     of those ^girls?
     Who saved the ^city?
I: ^Probably,
L: [People--]
I: [^probably.]
     Yeah.
W: I‟d see if they ^have it,
     I don‟t think they ^have it X.
L: Oh .. mhm
I: And then the ^other thing,
     was talking about a--
     a little golden ^statue that‟s--
     sat inside of a ^spring,
L: Uhuh
I: at one of the--
     one of the .. ^foothills,
     where there [was a] little ^temple.
L:                [Mhm]
     Mhm
                                           84
I: And the story about ^that was,
   she was ^sitting there,
   with a ^comb in her hand,
   and going like ^this,
L: Mhm
I: and,
   you couldn‟t ^see it very well,
   „cause it was--
   it--
   it--
   it had to go down a .. ^cave,
   and then ^look in,
   and you see this little .. golden ^creature,
   ^sitting in there,
   and they ^said the,
   origin of ^that was,
   there was a--
   a very fussy ^mother-in-law,
   and when her daughter-in-law went to get ^water,
   she said ^don‟t--
   she carried it ^home,
   with a .. `bucket at each ^end,
   and said--
                                                      85
just use the ^fronts bucket,
^throw the other bucke--
bucket a water--
water a^way.
And,
for a while the .. daughter-in-law ^did that,
and then she got so ^tired,
of going to get ^water,
and only .. putting ^half a bucket,
in the--
in the ^gong,
and--
and uh--
she met a--
it was really a ^fairy,
uh uh met uh a old ^woman out--
out^side somewhere,
and said--
uh I‟m so ^thirsty,
well,
have a ^drink,
but `won‟t you use the `water at the ^back,
„cause I have to throw that out ^anyway.
                                                86
   And so she said what‟s the ^trouble,
   so she told her about the .. fussy ^mother-in-law.
   Said well I can .. ^fix that for you,
   here,
   and she gave her a little ^stick,
   and said when you--
   when your .. `water gong gets ^low,
   you go a^bove it,
   and you ^wave,
   gona--
   ^water,
   ^water,
   ^water,
   ^water,
   ^water,
   wave the ^stick,
   and it will start ^coming,
L: Mhm
I: then when it‟s e^nough,
   you say .. `water `water ^stop.
   And it ^stops.
   So the--
   and the .. ^mother-in-law noticed the w--
                                                        87
   the gong was ^never empty,
   but--
   and the .. ^daughter-in-law,
   didn‟t seem to go get ^water,
   what was the ^matter.
   So she ^watched her one day,
   and .. here she ^was saying,
   `water `water `water ^come.
   And,
   she e‟en had the little ^stick in her hand,
   and,
   the da--
   the ^mother-in-law,
   rushed and ^grabbed the stick,
   and said ^now you‟ll have to go for more `water.
   But it--
   the water was ^coming,
   welling up out--
   out of the g--
L: [Mhm]
I: [up in--]
   in the ^gong.
   But,
                                                      88
     ^mother-in-law didn‟t know what to do with the `stick,
     she‟d just ^dropped it,
     and ran a^way,
     and so from then ^on,
     the water would kept--
     dr--
     coming out of ^there,
     that was where that .. ^spring was.
     And [then,]
L:          [Mhm]
I: ^mother-in-law--
     the ^daughter-in-law,
     is just combing her ^hair,
     so ^there she is,
     that little .. golden ^statue,
     combing her ^hair,
     and the ^water‟s coming,
     ^rushing from out`side,
     under^neath her.
L: ^I see.
     Neat. (3 secs)
     O^kay so,
     ^Izzy?
                                                              89
I: Yeah,
L: So this is the little ^boy,
    whose hand was uh .. damaged by the hand gre^nade.
I: That‟s right.
    And he .. could just use ^thumb,
    and two ^fingers.
    He holding an a--
    uh hard-boiled ^egg in his--
    in his ^hand.
L: ^I see,
    that‟s the ^summertime.
    And the other ^picture is,
    the ^wintertime.
I: No ^no,
    it‟s ^all the same `time.
L: [Oh]
I: [^One] time--
    ^one time he had the--
    had the (X) on,
    one time he ^didn‟t have--
L: Mhm
W: [X]
I: [So was in the fall]--
                                                         90
    winter--
    ^winter. (11 secs)
    After .. Pearl ^Harbor were--
    weren‟t allowed to--
    go out--
    out too ^far,
    so .. she--
    she came to the ^hospital,
    quite ^often,
    and she used to always ^visit,
    that little ^boy,
    bring him something .. special to ^eat.
    Sometimes a ^hard-boiled egg,
    sometimes a ^cookie,
L: Mhm
I: and he‟d be so ^pleased to,
L: [Mhm]
I: [sit and] ^eat it.
    And I think when the ^family came,
    to take him--
    to take him ^home,
    he was--
    he--
                                              91
   his--
   his ^hand,
   was perfectly ^good,
   ^this part.
   I ^mean,
   it had ^healed alright,
   just uh .. three ^fingers.
   But m--
   the three im^portant fingers,
L: Mhm (6 secs)
X: (X)
L: This is an--
   an ope^ration right?
W: Well .. yeah I think they ^staged it.
L: [Oh I ^see.]
W: [I don‟t think] it was the real ^thing.
X: (X)
L: So the ^women all set up,
   for the ^picture.
   And the men all lied ^down,
X: (X)
L: (X)
                                                                92
P: Forty-`five or forty-^six?
W: Forty-^six.
P: Forty-^six.
W: „Cause we ^both got there,
   about ^there,
   on the first of .. ^January,
   and ^you got there,
   three days ^later.
P: In forty--
   beginning of forty-^six,
   ^oh yeah,
   because I was in ^Shanghai,
   at East--
   at ^Christmas time.
   And I had gone a^round to the,
   FA^U.
                                         94
   The ^Stokes,
   Henry ^Stokes,
   had ^been there,
   (X),
   and I saw ^them,
   they had invited ^me. (4 secs)
   I thought I took „em ^off.
W: Well we‟ll put them ^on again,
   if you ^want.
P: @ Okay,
   let me ^have it,
   [over ^here.]
W: [No .. no] ^you do it,
   it‟ll get ^this taken.
P: O^kay.
W: I can X,
   not as expe`ditiously as ^you can.
L: Okay I‟m not videotaping ^you,
   so@--
W: No,
   ^no no.
L: Okay.
P: You‟re already set ^up?
                                        95
L: Uhuh,
   yes.
P: Very ^good.
   Well,
   um,
   nineteen forty-^six,
   in ^January,
   uh no De^cember,
   of nineteen forty-^five then,
   that I--
   that I arrived in ^China,
   uh having ^traveled,
   by ^train,
   across the ^country,
   then by ^airplane,
   um,
   ^somebody told me,
   the uh Minister of ^Agriculture,
   was sleeping on the floor ^next to me,
   I didn‟t--
   I didn‟t pay at^tention.
   ^Anyhow,
   we got to ^China,
                                            96
     uh `Christmas was around the ^corner,
     uh I was .. given my first as^signment,
     as the .. ^Regional,
     ^Agriculture,
     ^Rehabilitation officer,
     for ^UNRA,
L: Mhm
P: for the province of (SD).
     And [^probab]ly shipped off to,
L:        [Mhm]
P: uh (S).
L: Mhm
     Oh just .. one ^minute please,
     uh
P: Um,
     now it‟s working.
D: X
P: uh so we‟re in De^cember,
     December of nineteen forty-^five,
     having ar^rived in,
     Shang^hai,
     the ^only,
     people I ^knew there,
                                               97
before--
aside from ^UNRA people,
I‟m--
I was ^hired by UNRA--
UNRA,
was ^Henry Stokes,
who‟s a ^cousin,
and uh--
he in^vited me to,
Christmas uh ^party,
so I--
I ^met people there,
but ^basically,
my as^signment was to be,
the ^Regional,
^Agricultural,
^Rehabilitation officer,
um for (SD) ^province.
And having um .. ^got that assignment,
it wasn‟t very long before I was .. on a ^boat,
uh to (S).
In (S),
I was ^there for,
                                                  98
     oh a couple of ^weeks,
     and it was quite ^obvious,
     that the--
     it was a Nationalist ^area,
     of ^course,
     but .. ^none of (SD),
     except (S),
     um,
     was in Nationalist ^hands,
     in the [hands of] the ^government.
L:            [Mhm]
P: Of ^China.
     Which ^meant that,
     what was I to ^do,
     in a ^city?
     I was an ^Agriculture,
     Rehabili^tation officer,
     so I--
     I said to myself this is ^foolish,
     I took myself on the next ^boat,
     to Shang^hai,
     and X
     and said ^look,
                                          99
   give me something to ^do,
   this is no ^good,
   I mean this is just uh .. wasting ^money,
   wasting ^time.
   Well,
   they ^said,
   you can--
   you can uh--
   we have an ^opening,
   in--
   in uh (SD),
   um in that ^area,
   but you have to volun^teer.
   We can‟t ^force you.
   And I said ^goodness,
   ^send me.
   And so I ^was sent--
   and actually I was sent to ^(CF),
   [o^riginally.]
L: [Mhm] mhm
P: Uh in ^(CF),
   there--
   there were a ^lot of things,
                                               100
   that needed ^doing,
   of ^course.
   ^Over the course,
   of the time that I was ^there,
   they--
   I--
   I had .. ^sent,
   to the area I was ^in,
   which was Communist area of ^course,
   a `boatload of ^cattle.
   The `cattle had all been con^tributed,
   by uh farmers in the United ^States,
   um they were .. for ^milking of course,
   they were ^dairy cattle,
   and ^each animal,
   ad a little a^luminum,
L: Mhm
P: uh ^capsule.
L: Mhm
P: And inside the ^capsule,
   was the ^name of the `farmer,
   who donated the ^cattle.
L: Mhm
                                             101
P: The ^cow.
   Um
