the violence: “no foreign propagandist bent upon blackening
Germany before the world could outdo the tale of burnings and
beatings, of blackguardly assaults on defenseless and innocent
people, which disgraced that country yesterday.” Of course, this
was nothing more than well meaning bluster. The nations of the
world chose the path of appeasement. Rather than marking in
the end of a petty dictatorship, Kristallnacht is remembered as the
beginning of the Holocaust.
Now, nearly 60 years later, the Night of Broken Glass is both a
reminder of the past and a warning for the future. The Jewish
people have a mandate beginning with Abraham to respond to
injustice in the strongest possible way. As those who suffered the
horrors of the Holocaust it is unthinkable that we would be silent
to the suffering of the stranger in our day.
