Background

What is CAS?

CAS stands for:

       Creativity Action Service
CAS is one of the three core courses the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program
prides itself on. It is a framework for experiential learning designed to involve students in
new roles. The emphasis is on learning through performing a broad range of activities with
meaningful contributions and then reflecting on these experiences over time.

Students are expected to be continually involved with this program throughout a two-year
time period. Creativity is interpreted as imaginatively as possible to cover a wide range of
arts and other activities. Action does not restrict itself to expeditions, sports, or physical
training, but may include carrying out creative activities or service projects. Service
emphasizes community or social service. Activities that lead to academic credit or for
which the student is paid may not be included in CAS.

IB students are required to complete 50 hours in each of the three areas (creativity, action,
and service) for a total of 150 hours, though all are encouraged to excel beyond the
minimum requirement. Completing CAS is a requirement for receiving your IB diploma.

The Aims of CAS

CAS aims to complement the academic disciplines of the curriculum and to counterbalance
the academics, to challenge the individual student by developing a spirit of self-discovery
and self-reliance. CAS aims to develop students who are:

 Willing to accept new challenges and new roles.
 Reflective thinkers who are able to identify their own skills and interests.
 Aware of themselves as members of communities with responsibilities towards each
       other and the environment.
 Active participants in sustained, collaborative projects.
 Balanced individuals that enjoy and find significance in a range of activities
involving intellectual, physical, creative and emotional experiences.

                                                                                         Page | 1
Learning Outcomes

IB has identified eight outcomes to be achieved through the CAS program. The emphasis is
on the quality of the CAS. As you are planning your CAS program, reflect on where you are
positioned on the following eight outcomes.

Outcome #1- Increase your awareness of your strengths and areas for growth
You are able to see yourself as an individual with various skills and abilities, some more
developed than others, and understand that you can make choices about how you wish to
move forward

Outcome #2- Undertaken new challenges
A new challenge may be an unfamiliar activity, or an extension to an existing one.
Identify new challenges that you would like to take on.

Outcome #3: Planned and initiated activities
Planning and initiation will often be in collaboration with others. It can be shown in
activities that are part of larger projects, for example ongoing school activities in the local
community, as well as in small student-led activities.

Outcome #4: Worked collaboratively with others
Collaboration can be shown in many activities, such as team sports or playing music in a
band.

Outcome #5- Shown perseverance and commitment on your activities
A student needs to attend regularly and accept a share of the responsibility for dealing with
problems that arise in the course of activities.

Outcome #6- Engaged with issues of global importance
You are required to act on at least one issue of global significance. This activity may be an
international project, but there are many global issues that can be acted on locally or
nationally (for example: environmental concerns or caring for the elderly).

Outcome #7- Considered the ethical implications of your actions
Ethical decisions arise in almost any CAS activity. Evidence of thinking about ethical
issues can be shown is various ways, including journal entries and conversation with CAS
advisors.

Outcome #8- Developed new skills
As with new challenges, new skills may by shown in activities that the students has not
previously undertaken, or in increased expertise in an established area.

                                                                                             Page | 2
What is not CAS

CAS is not a points-scoring exercise. It should be an interesting variety of activities that
you find intrinsically worthwhile and rewarding, and which is mutually beneficial to you and
to your community. Generally, CAS should not be passive; instead, take on an active role.
CAS should include interaction. Examples of inappropriate CAS activities include, but are
not limited to:

 Any class, activity, or project that is already part of a student’s diploma program.
 An activity for which the student is rewarded financially or with some other benefit
(unless this benefit is passed on in full to a worthy cause).
 Doing simple, tedious, and repetitive work.
 All forms of duty within the family.
 Fund-raising attempts with no clearly defined purpose.
 Work experience which only benefits the student.
 Any activity where there is no leader or supervisor to evaluate and validate the
       student’s performance.

 my own responsibilities.
I know who the CAS coordinator and my CAS
advisor are and where their offices are.
I know that I can always discuss CAS issues and
concerns with my CAS coordinator and CAS

I must keep this CAS handbook clean and tidy at
all time. I will always use a black/blue pen to fill
in and sign all the forms.
I am aware of the two-year KAS CAS Timetable and I
 will definitely follow it.
I know that I must try and maintain a balance between
 Creativity, Action and Service.
My parents/guardians have been informed of the CAS
 program and its requirements.
I will set myself goals for each activity and I will
reflect carefully on each activity I undertake.
I have a responsible adult supervisor (not from
my family) for each activity/project I undertake.
I will make sure that my supervisors will read A
Letter to the Supervisor and be able to perform any
 responsibility wanted.
I will keep all the written records, photos, and
newspaper or magazine clippings in this
 handbook.
I will duly maintain a tally of my hours and have
these signed by the relevant supervisors.
I should always reflect on my own
 performance throughout the activity/project.
I have the necessary evaluation forms available for
my supervisors to fill in and return to me.
I know that I must fill in an official evaluation form
at the completion of each activity I undertake.
I clearly understand without the satisfactory and
