                                                           December 11, 2008
Commencement
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by John Ceisel.

Present:        Scott Baskin, John Ceisel, Andrew Czyszczon, Tim Devine, Jon Feiger, Vicki McMannon, Martha
                Mulligan, Cathy Quigley, Barry Rodgers, Mary Lou Schmidt

Absent:         Marnie Gielow, Meredith O’Connor

Guests:         Ellen Youniss, Michael Paulius, Jean Franke

Approval of Agenda
To approve the Agenda for the meeting (see Motion #1).

Approval of Minutes
To approve Minutes from the previous meeting (see Motion #2).

Public Report
    Discussed parent teacher conferences.

Principal’s Report
     Artificial coyotes have been purchased to keep the geese off the athletic field.
     The bus barn is changing their cleaning procedures so it will not impact the air quality of Northside.
     Northside was awarded a gold medal by U.S. News & World Report as being one of the top 100 schools in the
       country.
     Arne Duncan has reported a potential shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year.
     Andrew Miller (Northside ’09) won the prestigious Marshall Award.
     The entrance exam test will begin this weekend. There will be three more test dates in January.
     Both the Celestial Garden and the solar panel project are moving forward and it appears that they will come to
       fruition in 2009.
     Northside was inducted into the Illinois Environmental Hall of Fame.
     The Jazz and Band concerts were last week. The Choral and Orchestra concerts are next week.
     Peggy Murphy, Nicole Flores, and Robert Albritton went to a Professional Learning Community in Washington,
       D.C.
     Korean will not be offered next year because the federal grant expires.

Teacher’s Report
     Congratulations to Johan Tabora and Chris Pellikan on earning National Board Certification.
     The January 14th All-School Colloquium focusing on American music is being planned. Students will
      register for their music experiences on-line. A terrific line-up of performers is being put together.
     A new interdisciplinary course—Sustainable Innovations—will be offered next year.
     Alumni Speak will be held next Thursday after school. The list of speakers includes:
          o Adam Gottlieb, Hampshire College
          o William T. Hagen, University of Miami
          o Abijith Kowligy, Northwestern University
          o Rana Marks, Lawrence University
            o John Mussman, Harvard University
            o Matthew Nemeth, University of Chicago
            o Katherine Nunes, Wellesley College

Student’s Report
    The Fall play was a success.
    The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors had meetings regarding programming with the department chairs.
    Congratulations to the women’s varsity swim team who won the city championship.

Finance Committee/Friends of Northside
    In light of the current economic situation, we want to ensure that Friends has enough cash on hand to support the
       start of the 2009-2010 academic year.
    The Annual Fund has raised $162,000.
    State of the budget meetings will be coming in January 22nd, 27th, and 29th at 6:15 and 7:15.
    The Friends of Northside and Parent Network met with Payton and Lincoln Park to exchange ideas about
       fundraising and parental involvement in the schools.

Northside Parent Network
    The Network has been very generous with their time this Fall.
    There will be a teacher appreciation event will be held on Tuesday.
    There will be a parent education night focused on adolescents and technology.

Building and Facilities
    The CPS does an annual building review.
    The Engineer’s budget has not been increased since 1999.
    There are a few areas of concern from the Engineer:
           o Degrading bricks on the front of the building and degrading sidewalks.
           o Upgrading security cameras and locks.
           o Concern about the lighting in the gym.
           o Discussed the driveway hump on Bryn Mawr.

Curriculum
     The 1:1 committee met with the Technology Coordinator from Burley Elementary School to learn more
      about their experience with 1:1. The Vice President of North American Sales from Fujitsu will be
      visiting campus on Friday.

Principal Selection and Evaluation
     The process and timeline for the evaluation will be discussed at the January meeting.

New Business
    To approve, $9,900 (Musical Instruments), $2,250 (Debate Team), $13,035 (Printer Contract), $3,000 (Smart
      Board), and $8,511.35 (Furniture for the Language Lab) (see Motion #3)
    Mary Lou has been mentoring a Northside graduate who is in UIC’s pre-Med program.

Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Next Meeting
The next meeting of the LSC will be on January 8th at 7:00 p.m. Public participation is welcome.
