Transfer Notes
• Business programs at four-year schools vary. Most offer areas of specialization such as accounting,
      finance, marketing, and management.
• There are usually admission requirements to business programs in addition to the college itself.
Individual schools vary as to these admission requirements.
• A variety of occupations may be available for Business Administration majors: Comptroller, Convention
Manager, Hotel Manager, Investment Banker, Human Resources, School Administrator, Retail Manager.

Course Placement Information
Placement in English and math is dependent upon ACT scores, previous courses or assessment scores.

Suggested Courses
This sample transfer planning guide meets the requirements of the A.A. degree and follows the Illinois
Articulation Initiative business administration baccalaureate major recommendations. Students will
choose a major within the business field at the four-year institution they attend. Transfer institution
requirements may vary-students should check individual college/university requirements before
completing the sample plan as outlined. Baccalaureate admission may be competitive; completion of
these courses alone does not guarantee admission.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

EIU accepts the second course if a course is repeated.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes, but if students transfer with 60 or more semester hours they risk falling behind in their business
course work if they transfer as undecided, so this is not recommended.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

Students will be denied admission to the University if they do not meet the 2.0 GPA requirement.
Business requires a 2.5/4.0 scale (2.75/4.0 scale for Accounting majors) to be accepted to the School of
Business. If a student has less than the 2.5, then they will be listed as Pre-Business until the GPA is
brought up.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

For repeated courses, ISU uses the last grade shown on the transcript for calculating the admission
GPA.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

They can, but they have different requirements for internal transfer students based on the number of
semester hours they’ve completed.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

Students will not be admitted if they do not have the minimum 2.5 GPA.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

The grades of repeated courses are averaged together.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes, but students may have to spend at least one semester in undecided status, and then they
may be able to complete an internal transfer.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

Most of the time, students are just not eligible. Students may be given the option to transfer
into the College of Arts and Sciences.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

NEIU calculates the higher grade in the GPA.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes, every student that transfers to NEIU comes in as an “undeclared” major. Once a student
has decided on a major, he/she would declare their major by visiting the College of Business
& Management.

Once the specific college or program reviews the student’s evaluation of transfer credit hours,
the department would make a decision to full admit the student into the major/minor.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

If the student does not have a minimum of 2.0/4.0 scale they will not be admitted to the
University.

                                          ADMISSION
Requirements for admission to the College of Business & Management include:

• Minimum of 60 credit hours completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
• Completion of the following eight foundation courses with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Students
must earn a C or better in these eight courses as well as all courses applied to the Business major
   or minor.
• All courses taken are factored in when calculating the GPA in the foundation courses:
  ENG 101, ENG 102, MTH 124, MTH 134, ACC 101, ACC 102, ACC 213, ECO 211
• ECO 212 is not required for admission but is required for graduation and may be completed at
   Harper
• Apply for formal admission through the College of Business & Management (this is equivalent
   to declaring a business major/minor).
• All students must pass NEIU’s English Language Proficiency Exam.
• Because of university and departmental standards, it is highly recommended that the students
fulfill A.A. or A.S. requirements and include the required Business & Management courses.

The maximum number of transfer credits that can be applied toward a College of Business and
Management major program is 24 (8 courses), and the maximum number of transfer credits that
can be applied toward a College of Business and Management minor is 9 (3 courses). Transfer
students who major in the College of Business and Management must take a minimum of 10
business courses at Northeastern.

                                                                                                   16
The College of Business and Management http://www.neiu.edu/~bschool/transfer.htm generally
accepts up to 24 transfer credits for Foundation Core and Major equivalent courses so long as -

The transferred course is at the same or higher level as its Northeastern equivalent.

• A college-level macroeconomics course will be accepted as the equivalent of ECON 215 (a
Core course), because ECON 215 is a lower division (freshman/sophomore) course at
    Northeastern.
• An introductory marketing course taken at a community college is not automatically accepted as
the equivalent of MKTG 350 (a Core course), because MKTG 350 is an upper-division
    (junior/senior) course at Northeastern.
• An introductory marketing course taken at a four-year university will generally be accepted as
equivalent to MKTG 350 if it is also an upper-division course at the school where it was taken
(for example, MKT 230 at Illinois State University).
• For some of its upper-division courses, the College offers Proficiency Exams that allow
recognition of equivalent lower-division course work. If you've taken a lower-division course in
Principles of Finance, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, Cost Accounting,
Intermediate Financial Accounting I, Intermediate Financial Accounting II, Federal Income Tax
(Individual), or Auditing, you may be able to earn a waiver (but not upper-division credit) for
that course by passing its Proficiency Exam. E-mail or phone the College's program advisors for
more information about Proficiency Exams: 773-442-6111.

The credits for transferred business courses are six or fewer years old.

• In general, credit for a business course that you took more than six years ago cannot be applied
toward the College's Foundation, Core, or Major requirements. Exceptions to this policy can be
granted on the basis of work or related academic experience. The course that you took ten years
ago in Introductory Financial Accounting, for example, will not meet the College's ACTG 201
requirement - unless of course you're employed as a full-time accountant!

You earned a grade of C or better for the transferred course.

• The College does not grant credit or other recognition for grades lower than C for courses taken
on a pass-fail basis, nor for incompletes.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

NIU takes the last grade in repeat situations, if it is a legal repeat.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Students can transfer as “undecided” and later apply to the College of Business if all of the
limited admission criteria are met.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

If students are not admissible to NIU, they will be denied.

courses. Students must take NIU’s UBUS 310 in the first semester in which they take 300-level
course work in the College of Business. It is highly recommended that students complete the
prerequisites for this course (listed above) before transferring to NIU.

Other courses highly recommended to be taken before transfer: ENG 101 and SPE 101.

                                ACCOUNTING MAJORS
Any student admitted to NIU can declare the Accountancy major; however, to enroll in any 300 or
400 level Accountancy courses certain criteria must be met. These criteria are as follows:

Option 1:
• Meet the requirements to enroll in UBUS 310, (Business Core Lecture); and
• Obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 ; and
• Obtain a minimum grade of B in ACC 101 & ACC 102*.
• Students who meet option #1 must formally request a review of their transcript by sending a
completed Department of Accountancy Transcript Review Request Form to the Dept. Of
   Accountancy.
Option 2:
• Meet the requirement to enroll in UBUS 310, (Business Core Lecture); and obtain a passing
score on the Accountancy Qualifying Exam (AQE).
• Students who wish to meet Option 2 should contact Testing Services at NIU at 815-753-1203 to
   register for the AQE.

*Students who do not have a B or better in ACC 101 & 102 or a cumulative GPA greater than 3.2
must successfully complete the Accounting Qualifying Exam (AQE) to be retained as Accountancy
majors at NIU.

Students interested in Accountancy should take ACC 101 and ACC 102 during their sophomore
year.

Students who wish to take the AQE should contact the NIU Department of Accountancy at 815-
753-6200, or email Rowene Linden at rlinden@niu.edu. Information about the AQE can be found

                                      MISCELLANEOUS

Due to accreditation regulations, community college business courses, which are apparent
substitutions for NIU 300 and 400 level courses, transfer as elective credit only (they will not satisfy
major requirements).

Harper College has a compact agreement with Northern Illinois University. Students must earn an
A.A.or A.S. degree.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

If it’s at the same institution, Roosevelt takes the higher grade. For example, if a student
transfers with a credit for college algebra from two colleges; for the GPA we would average it.
If it was taken at the same college, Roosevelt would just take the higher grade.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

Yes, Roosevelt would work with each student on a case-by-case basis. Minimum GPA for
admission is a 2.0/4.0. A Roosevelt admissions counselor would review and make suggestions
for applicants who do not immediately meet this GPA requirement. Roosevelt does not
automatically deny applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

For the purposes of determining admission to the School of Business, SIUE will take the most
recent grade on the student’s transcript.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes—of course the earlier they decide on the major, the better it is for the student.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

The College will review the application, but the likelihood of admission is low.

Submission of a School of Business Undergraduate Admission Application Form is required of
students wishing to apply for any major in the School of Business (Accounting, Business
Administration, Computer Management & Information Systems or Economics and Finance).

Requirements to Apply for Undergraduate Admission to the School of Business
An applicant to the School of Business will be considered ready to be reviewed for admission when
all of the following criteria are met:

1. Admission to the University.

2. Submission of a completed Application for Undergraduate Admission received by the School of
Business Student Services Office by the stated deadline. Applications are available from the
School of Business website http://www.siue.edu/BUSINESS/UGAPPLICATION.doc or in
Business Student Services, located on the third floor of Founders Hall. An application file is
considered complete when the application form, essay, and a record of current course
enrollment are in the applicant’s file. Applicants must also ensure that all transcripts from
community colleges and four-year institutions have arrived at the Service Center, Registrar’s
Office, Box 1080, Edwardsville, IL 62026-1080. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that
their materials are received by February 1 for Summer and Fall admission and by September 15
for Spring admission. All materials must be in the applicant’s file before the deadline in order
for the applicant to be considered for admission. Early completion of the application file is
   strongly encouraged.

3. Students must apply for full admission to a business program once they have completed at
least 7 of the 12 courses listed below and will be completed with all 12 courses by the end of
the term in which the application is submitted. All prerequisite courses must be completed
with a grade of C or higher.

Prerequisite courses (Harper College Course Numbers):
               • ENG 101 & 102

                                                                                                 30
Admission Decisions
Admission decisions will be based primarily on the student's performance in collegiate level work
and the required essay. Other factors that may be considered in the admission decision include, but
are not limited to, number of prerequisite courses completed at the time of application, courses
taken, pattern and trend of grades, institutions attended, co-curricular activities, contribution to the
diversity of the student body, as well as career or work related experience. The School of Business
intends to admit students who demonstrate the greatest likelihood of academic success. Applicants
are reviewed by the Undergraduate Admissions Committee of the School of Business and notified
of their status within 45 days of the application deadline for the term for which they are seeking
admission. Admission to School of Business programs is competitive and not all students who
apply to the School of Business will be admitted. Since the number of students being admitted
depends on the capacity of the School, applicants cannot be given a guaranteed grade point average
to gain admission to the School of Business.

Transfer and Pre-Business Students
Transfer students will follow the application process described above and may contact the School of
Business Student Services Office with questions regarding transferability and equivalency of
business course work completed at other institutions. The School of Business accepts lower-division
courses taken at other institutions only as lower-division (100- and 200-level) courses. Pre-business
students must be accepted into the School of Business before full admission to a major will be
granted. Students who are not accepted by the School will not be allowed to enroll in 300- or 400-
level business courses.

Orientation
All students who are accepted into the School of Business are required to attend an orientation
session. Students who are admitted for summer or fall semester will attend an orientation in the
preceding spring semester. Students who are admitted for spring semester will attend an orientation
session in the preceding fall semester. Several different sessions will be scheduled in order to meet
the needs of students. The exact times and locations of those sessions will be communicated in
students’ acceptance letters. Students will not be allowed to register for 300-level business courses
until they have attended an orientation session.

Transcripts
An official transcript is required from every college or university at which you have taken courses
that you would like to use for credit towards Southern Illinois University Edwardsville General
Education Requirements or Business Admission Requirements. This includes summer sessions and
night school classes. Students must request from the institution where classes were attended an
official transcript to be sent directly to the following address:
         Service Center
         Registrar’s Office
         Box 1080
         Edwardsville, IL 62026-1080
Some schools require the student’s signature and a fee to release a transcript to another school.

                                          COURSES
Students are encouraged to complete a maximum of 60 semester hours prior to transferring.
Although the College does not limit the number of hours that can transfer, the last 60 hours of the
degree must be completed at a four year institution.

Business core courses that can be completed at Harper include (not required for admission):
  ♦ ACC 101, 102
  ♦ CIS 101
  ♦ ECO 211, ECO 212
  ♦ MGT 225 or MTH 165
  ♦ MGT 270
  ♦ MKT 245.

Accounting majors must earn grades of C or better in accounting courses to receive credit. All
transfer students who plan to pursue the accounting major must pass the Accounting Qualifying
Exam in order to be eligible to enroll in accounting major courses.

The College of Business Administration requires two years of a single foreign language in high
school or one year of a single foreign language at the college level.

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

All grades for repeated courses are used in calculating the admission GPA.
Grades from all transferable coursework attempted will be averaged together.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

No.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

The college will utilize a holistic review process which will assess the entire student record
(academic performance, demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills, leadership
ability, work experience and Personal and Professional Essays). Ultimately, the criteria for
admission (grade point average, etc.) will be determined by the pool of applicants. Fall 2006
transfer students accepted by the College of Business posted an average transfer GPA of 3.30
and it is expected that for Fall 2007 the average GPA will be similar. Most programs require a
minimum of 60 transferable hours to be admitted. The best candidates are selected for the
spaces available. Admission criteria are 1) completion before transfer of appropriate course
work for your major; 2) GPA; and 3) Personal and Professional essay information on the
application. Eligibility of transfer applicants with fewer than 30 semester hours is based upon
high school percentile rank, ACT or SAT test score, GPA, and content of transferable courses
attempted.

                                          ADMISSION
The College of Business at the University of Illinois will utilize a holistic review process which will
assess the entire student record (academic performance, demonstrated analytical and critical
thinking skills, leadership ability, work experience and Personal and Professional Essays). Transfer
applicants are strongly encouraged to include a résumé with their application in addition to their
Personal/Professional Statement. Personal and Professional Essays really give the college a better
indication of why you want to study business at UIUC and the goals you have for your future. Your
statements might include:

o Interest or experience in business
           o Employment or volunteer activities
o State or national recognition for talent, creative ability, leadership, or academic
             achievement
o An ethnic or cultural background or an age group that will add diversity to this
             campus
o Extenuating circumstances that significantly affected an otherwise exceptionally
             good academic record
o Any other information that you feel would complete your profile

The criteria for admission (grade point average, etc.) will be determined by the pool of applicants.
Fall 2008 transfer students accepted by the College of Business posted an average transfer GPA of
3.80 (A=4.0).

Although the College will review applicants with less than 60 hours completed, prefer will be
given to junior transfers. The required hours and courses listed below must be completed or
in progress by the term of application. (Applicants will not be permitted to complete
admission hours or course requirements during the summer prior to enrollment).

Transfer applicants with six or more semesters or 90 or more semester hours completed or in
progress at the time of application are subject to review based on available space.

Priority is given to students who can complete the College of Business degree requirements in no
more than nine total semesters of college (excluding summer sessions).

                                            COURSES
The following prerequisite courses should be completed prior to transfer:
• ACC 101, 102
• ENG 101, 102
• ECO 211, 212
• MTH 200 and 201 or MTH 134 and 124 or MTH 200 and 124
• CIS 101 or CIS 168

It is recommended that all business majors (especially accounting majors) take MTH 165 or MGT
225 (UIUC’s ECON 202) prior to transfer.

                                                                                                     35
Accounting majors are encouraged to apply for summer to continue fall so they can complete
UIUC’s ECON 203 in the summer and then begin their 300-level accountancy sequence in the fall.

Business Administration majors are strongly encouraged to complete PSY 100 prior to transfer
because PSYC 201 – Introduction to Social Psychology (UIUC course number) is a degree
requirement.

All transfer applicants must have completed either three years of one language other than English in
high school or through the second level (2 semesters) of one language other than English in college
prior to the desired term of entry. It is strongly encouraged that transfer applicants complete the
Language Requirement for this college prior to transfer. For this UIUC college, the graduation
requirement is satisfied by completion through the fourth year of one language other than English in
high school or though the fourth level (4 semesters) of one language other than English in college. If
this UIUC college’s Language Requirement for graduation has been completed, additional
transferable coursework should replace each of the Language Requirement courses listed.
Consultation with the transfer institution’s advising staff is strongly recommended.

Most majors have prerequisite courses which must be completed prior to the desired term of
entry. Refer to the UIUC transfer handbook, which can be found on-line at
http://admissions.illinois.edu/apply/requirements_transfer_handbook.html (see red italics
courses)

Transfer students are also encouraged to visit the College of Business web site at:

Does this school average, or take the higher grade with regards to repeated courses?

The university policy is to respect what the sending institution reports on their transcript, so
whatever Harper reports as hours earned and GPA is what WIU uses.

Can students transfer as undecided majors, and then later be admitted to the Business major?

Yes, all students apply to the university and not to a specific dept at Western. Everyone has a
chance to change their major including undecided students. Students should be mindful of
the required prerequisite courses, however.

If students fall below the required GPA at Harper, will the College still review their application for
consideration? Or, are students automatically not eligible for admittance?

Students must have a 2.0/4.0 GPA to be considered for admission to the University. Students
who do not have the required GPA from Harper still have a chance to become business
majors while working on their GPA at Western.
