                                                       Pre-Nursing
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
For the Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN), students complete a list of pre-requisite courses at an accredited college or university and then apply
for admission into a professional nursing school to complete up to 2 years of coursework that includes classroom, laboratory, and clinical education.
Completion of the pre-requisite courses can be completed in as little as 2 years or as part of a degree plan in any major. Pre-Nursing is not a
degree/certificate granting program at the University of M aryland, nor does the University offer a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
Applicants considering the University of M aryland, School of Nursing, can apply as a 2+2 dual admissions applicant or as a traditional applicant in
the general applicant pool:

Dual Admission Applicants: The University of M aryland and the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), School of Nursing (SON) offers a dual
admission program. This program guarantees admission to the UMB School of Nursing for eligible applicants upon successful completion of a set of pre-requisite
science and non-science courses set by the School of Nursing. Courses are listed below.

University of Maryland Baltimore S chool of Nursing Dual Admission Program
S tudents participating in the 2+2 Dual Admission Program must meet the following criteria to apply:
     1. You started ALL course work at the University of Maryland College Park directly from High S chool OR
     2. You transferred in coursework from an accredited institution to the University of Maryland College Park within your first 30
          credit hours.
     3. You are applying for FALL admission to the University of Maryland Baltimore S chool of Nursing (Baltimore campus or Shady
          Grove campus).
     4. You have completed or are in the process of completing all coursework prior to Summer Session 1.
     5. You meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 in all required courses with no grade below a C in a prerequisite course.
     6. You must maintain a 3.25 GPA or higher in prerequisite science course work (Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and
          Microbiology) to be considered.
     7. You must contact the Health Professions Advisor in 0129 Chemistry Building before the end of the fall semester of your sophomore
year to complete a brief application for guaranteed admittance into UMB SON.
     8. After guaranteed admission, you must maintain a 3.0 in all remaining required courses

Traditional Applicants: Students who do not meet the criteria above are still eligible to apply to the University of M aryland Baltimore, School of
Nursing (UM B SON) as a traditional applicant. Traditional applicants are required to complete and submit the entire applicat ion package as found
on-line at http://nursing.umaryland.edu. Traditional applicants will need a minimum 3.0 Overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 Science GPA to be
considered for admission to SON. However, please note that the average traditional applicant being accepted at UM B SON has a 3.5 to a 4.0 GPA
and the traditional application process is highly competitive. *Please note that although the minimum required GPA is 3.0 overall and 3.0 in the
sciences (Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology I/II), the 2+2 Program requires a higher minimum GPA for Maryland
Baltimore S chool of Nursing.

The science GPA includes four science courses: Chem 131/132; BSCI 201; BSCI 202; and BSCI 223. Only the most recent grade for any required
course is counted: Repeated grades are not included in this GPA calculation, but repeated courses are noted by the admission personnel. Students
must complete a total of 59 credits in prerequisite courses: Only 6 advanced placement credits may be applied toward these prerequisites.
Traditional applicants who want to make themselves eligible for other nursing programs outside of Maryland, such as Johns Hopkins and
Towson—in addition to the coursework below—should take an Organic Chemistry I course (CHEM 231/232).

Some prerequisite courses usually required by most professional phase Traditional Nursing programs include, but are not limited to:
General Biology Human Anatomy and Physiology
