Author's Note
A play about one woman, before and after she made it. The nun-mind - what she imagines
herself to be. The whore-flesh - what the world saw her to be. Taking place from the time
she commits suicide, by strangulation on her asylum room cross, to the time she actually
dies, ten seconds later. The play being all the flashes that appear in clear view of death
- and the inevitable struggle (once she knows she is going to die) to live. A play about
one woman who didn't quite make it.
"The White Whore and the Bit Player" was first presented by Ellen Stewart at the La Mama
Experimental Theatre Club, New York City, on August 28, 1964. The original cast (under the
author's direction was:
White Whore ....... Mari-Claire Charba
Bit Player ........ Jacque Lynn Colton
In subsequent productions at the Caffe Cino Helen Hanft performed the role of Bit Player
and J. P. Dodd created the lighting.
Time: The ten seconds between the act of suicide and the actual
physical surrender of a body.
Place: A sanitorium room of a famous image, a washed-up blonde, before and after. Before,
as she saw herself and after, as the world saw her.
