     The changing rainfall patterns of
     Australia’s apple growing districts

     BY DR GORDON BROWN

     Climate change is a natural
     phenomenon that has been
     occurring ever since the
earth was formed. It is a
     result of both natural causes
     as well as human influences.
Natural causes of climate change include
Southern Oscillation (El Nino), Pacific Decadal
     Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, volcanic
eruptions, fluctuations in solar output and
orbital cycle and polar ice variations. Human
influences on climate include changing land
uses, urban climate effects, production of
greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane as
well as aerosols and other air pollutants.

While the records and models are well
developed for climate change effects on
temperature, the impact on rainfall is poorly
understood. It is known that large areas of
Australia have become drier since 1950 and this
reduction in rainfall has become more severe in
recent years (figures 1 and 2).

In the previous article, however, Perry Wiles
states that “trends in rainfall are complex as
Australian rainfall is highly variable on a year
to year basis but, as we are beginning to
understand, also on a decade to decade basis,
with abrupt ‘step-like’ changes apparent in
the records”. At the recent ITFA conference
in Hobart earlier this year, the Queensland
Department of Primary Industry presented a
paper on the current observed climate changes
with some detailed information on rainfall for
the past 80–100 years for the Stanthorpe,
Batlow, Bacchus Marsh and Huon regions
(figures 3 to 6). This data clearly shows the
‘abrupt step-like’ changes referred to by Perry The rough guide to climate change
