THRICE	IS	NICE	—	March	18,	2000
It	may	not	be	the	most	publicized	national	champion	in	his-
tory,	but	the	Washington	University	women’s	basketball	team
certainly	can	lay	claim	to	being	one	of	the	greatest.
With	a	79-33	win	over	the	University	of	Southern	Maine,	the
Bears	became	the	first	team	in	NCAA	Division	III	history	to	win
three-straight	national	championships.	Washington	U.,	which
also	wrapped	up	a	second	straight	30-0	season,	became	just
the	second	team	in	NCAA	basketball	history	—	any	division,
men	or	women	—	to	post	back-to-back	undefeated	national
championship	seasons.	Only	the	UCLA	men	of	the	early	1970s
