A hero in the making
    David Ortiz was born in the Dominican
republic on November 18, 1975 and graduated
from Estudia Espallat High School. He was a
very athletic boy growing up. He played
basketball baseball and soccer. His two favorite
sports were baseball and basketball. He always
hoped to turn pro in one of these sports. Finally,
in 1992 he was signed to the Seattle Mariners as
a back up designated hitter.
       ACHIEVEMENTS
• Hank Aaron award for best all around
  hitter in the A.L.
• Led American league in runs batted in in
  2005 and 2006
• Had two homeruns in the A.L.C.S. and 1
  homerun in the World Series
• Led A.L. in homeruns in 2006
• Homerun total increased each year from
  2000-2005
                 Challenges
•   Torn meniscus in his right knee (2007)
•   Shoulder and quad injuries (2007)
•   Irregular heart beat (2006)
•   Broken wrist in 1998 and 2001

    All of these injuries negatively affected his
    performance. He had to go to rehab and
    work very hard in order to overcome these
    challenges.
                 Timeline
• 1992 Ortiz was signed to the Seattle Mariners
• 1996 he was traded to the Minnesota Twins and
  made his debut for the Twins in September 1997
• Twins released him in 2002
• Boston Red Sox signed him in 2003
• 2004 Boston won the world series and broke
  Babe Ruth’s curse
• 2007 won the world series

1.   Why is David Ortiz famous? What were the important actions this person
     took
        David Ortiz is famous because of his success in Major League baseball. He
     helped the Boston Red Sox win the world series and is a four time all star 2004-
     2007.
2.   What are two or three challenges David Ortiz had to overcome? How did
     they overcome those problems?
         Some of David Ortiz’s challenges were a torn meniscus in his right knee and
     an irregular heartbeat. He overcame these problems by going to rehab.
3.   What personality traits enabled David Ortiz to realize personal goals and
     dreams?
         David Ortiz’s hard work and dedication played a big part in him realizing his
     goals and dreams. For example, he couldn’t afford bats or balls so he used sticks
     and oranges.
4.   What do you admire or dislike about David Ortiz? Explain the thinking
     behind your conclusion.
         I admire David Ortiz because he is a team player and is always lifting his
     teammates spirits. He also demonstrates hard work and dedication.
