VOTER INFORMATION
Any resident who is a citizen of the United States and is 18 years of age, or who will reach that
age prior to the next election, may register to vote. There is no residency requirement in order to
vote in New Mexico. Voter registration closes 28 days before an election takes place.

To register, you may call the County Bureau of Elections to request that a registration form be
mailed to you. Or, you may register in person at the County Clerk's office, the Motor Vehicle
Division, a public library, Santa Fe Community College, or at any state office providing public
assistance to those with disabilities. If your voter registration card does not arrive within 3
weeks, contact the County Clerk. To check your voter information, www.voterview.state.nm.us.

You must re-register to vote if you:
1. Legally change your name by marriage or otherwise
2. Change your residence
3. Change party affiliation
In primary elections, only registered members of major parties may vote for party candidates, and
only within their own party. Independents and minor-party members may not vote in a primary
election. New Mexico does not allow crossover voting in primary elections.

Primary Elections are held on the first Tuesday in June of even-numbered years and are open to
registered members of the major parties. All other elections are open to registered voters
regardless of party affiliation. Those who "decline to state" can not vote in the primaries.

Early Voting is allowed in New Mexico for three weeks prior to a primary or general election.

Absentee Voting is allowed for all county and state elections upon application to the office of the
County Clerk. Absentee ballot applications are available at the County Clerk and through
www.sos.state.nm.us. The time to make application to vote by absentee ballot varies from
election to election. Contact the County Clerk for further information.
