Optical Illusions

• An optical illusion
     is an optical
   phenomenon that
   results in a false
  or deceptive visual
      impression
How many tigers are in this picture?
     Where They Started
•Optical illusions were first
 used by the Greeks. They
 built their temples so that
 the roof was slanted. This
 gave the illusion that the
 temple was actually
 standing straight.
Stare at the dot on the left side for 15 seconds.
  Then glance at the right side. What do you
                      see?
•The history of optical
 illusions lie back in 450 B.C
 when Epicharmus and
 Protagorus all had different
 visions of what they call now
 optical illusions.
Stare at the black dot and see what happens!
• A long time passed until
  someone got into optical
  illusions again. In 1826, a
  psychologist Johannes Mueller
  wrote two books about visual
  illusions but many people
  thought he was crazy and didn’t
  know what he was talking about.
• There was some talk about
  optical illusions around the time
  of 1965 but since then Optical
  illusions have not been that
  popular at all.
• The study of optical illusions
  did not engage the attention of
  scientists until a comparatively
  recent period.
• An optical illusion does not
  generally exist physically but it
  is difficult in some cases to
  explain the cause.

•The study of illusions
 includes both how we
 perceive what is around
 us and how we project
 our own concepts onto
 what we see.
