Working title: DeLaveaga Elementary School

Brief Profile of Users
Three individuals participated in the usability test: one DeLaveaga (DLV) parent, DLV’s librarian, and the Dos Alas (DA) Two Way Immersion program coordinator. The librarian, who maintains the school’s current web site, will assume ownership of the DLV portion of the website upon completion of this project. The DA program coordinator and I will continue to develop the DA portion of the site going forward.
Think Aloud task
I asked all testers to complete the tasks listed below then return to the home page. Locate the October 2007 Dos Alas Parent Advisory Committee meeting notes. Find a teacher’s contact information. Find the page created especially for teachers.
Summary of Think Aloud
The parent, a tester with limited experience seeking information online, was not able to locate the meeting notes but found faculty contact information and the “For Teachers” page of the site easily. The librarian and the program coordinator successfully navigated through all three tasks. The parent commented that the small text size on the “Quick Links” section of the home page stymied completion of the first task. Two testers commented that some information is located on the wrong page. One misspelled word and one capitalization error was identified as well.
Summary of Post-test
The school staff noted several design and content fixes. The school staff’s greatest concern is that the size of the pages appears small in the browser window.
Findings to be Implemented
The following action items resulted from the post-test interviews: Increase the text size of all links found in the “Quick Links” section of pages Dos Alas link should be more prominent on the DLV home page Move English Learners Advisory Committee information to the page with Parent Teacher Committee and Site Council Notes Change “PTA” to “PTC” throughout the site Make pages appear wider in the browser window Convert all meeting notes to portable documents Link to the district calendar from the DLV homepage Create forms for volunteer sign-up opportunities Add David's welcome message to DLV homepage Add a calendar to the Dos Alas Two Way Immersion Program homepage Add paragraph describing the Task force and Dos Alas Parent Advisory Committee (DAPAC) on the meeting notes pages Change heading on DAPAC parent committee page to read “Dos Alas Two Way Immersion Program Meeting Notes”
Findings that will not be Implemented
I am not sure that there is time to redesign the pages to appear wider by the deadline for this project’s completion. A few pages will continue to present information in word document form until there is time to create parallel HTML versions.
