    Student Ministry

The weekend our student ministry was
  dragged through the mud
Ingomar Church’s Route Sixty8 student ministry
recently got involved in some mud slinging during
their annual weekend retreat at Laurelville in
Mt. Pleasant. Sixteen youth in grades 6–8 joined
forces with hundreds of other teens from across Western PA
for a romp in the mud, a sloshy game of flag football, and a
40-hour funfest centered around our awesome God!

“Our kids were highly involved in the weekend worship and all
the alien-themed games, entertainment and activities,” beams
Meg Mountain, Ingomar Church’s interim youth leader. “In front
of hundreds of other youth and adults, Chris Piccoli chugged Coke
through someone else’s stinky sock. Jacob Gill made himself a
date, which he named Patricia, and accompanied her to the Alien
Dance, where he participated in a dance-off with her.”

“Patricia was a broomstick with an aluminum-foil head and multiple
arms,” laughs 11-year-old Rani Pietryzk. “It was one of the funniest
parts of the whole retreat! I felt close to God throughout the whole
weekend, but I really, really, really felt close to God when we sat on
a hillside under the stars. This weekend was one of the best of my life!”

For Autumn Hunkele, 12, the mud was the best part. “What could
be more fun than literally swimming in the mud?” she asks. “It was
like chocolate milk, except it didn’t taste as good!”

Alyssa Hunkele, 13, admits she really wasn’t up for the whole ‘get-
ting dirty’ thing, but was willing to make the most of the retreat.
In the end, she walked away feeling more open to God. “One
of the speakers, named Ben, talked about how God considers
everything we bring to Him important simply because we’re
coming to Him with it and it’s making our relationship to Him
stronger. That was really awesome. I always was embarrassed
to talk to God about stupid things, but Mud Weekend made
me so open that I now feel I can pray to God about anything.” ■
