Quotable Quotes...
“The Fall Of The Roman Umpire is magnificently performed by Dennis Coard. The play, a one-man
show, is an autobiographical piece depicting his early life in Ireland, emigration to Australia and his
young adulthood as a Telecom technician before “throwing away a good career” to go to drama school
at age thirty-five. Dennis’ play is witty, poignant and hilarious with superb timing... his portryal of the
ageing ANZAC particularly inspiring. The huge repertoire covered during this hour-long performance
is testament to Dennis’ immense talent”
                                Wendy McMahon, theatre reviewer, MRSS.

“A wonderful show. Beautifully performed by Dennis Coard. Thoroughly enjoyable”
                             Sigrid Thornton, actor.

“There is something rich and rare here. Dennis has the capacity to transport you to a place where you
laugh and cry and secretly never want to leave”
Kerry Armstrong, A.F.I winner, Lantana, Sea Change.

“This is a show not to be missed—tremendous humour balanced by pathos. A remarkable piece from a
versatile performer.”
Melanie Beddie, director, Melbourne Theatre Company.

“...with impressive acting ability, Coard captivates the audience... he fascinates and delights, weaving
magic from everyday existence”.
                                Jeff Northam, The Age

“...really good fun... a great performance and very funny.”
                                  Chris Keogh, Sunday Arts, 3LO

“... this is a charming and cheeky one man show... his characters are delightful and believable and his
Irish accent is flawless... Coard is a consummate comic performer.”
                                 Kate Herbert, Herald-Sun

“It is a long time since I have been in a theatre when everyone was shouting with laughter. Dennis is a
truly funny man — I’m so glad I married him.”
Debra Lawrance, actor, Home And Away, Blue Heelers.

“If you don’t laugh you get your money back.”
                            Dennis Coard, actor.

Magic from everyday life
     By Jeff Northam
     April 12

THE FALL OF THE ROMAN UMPIRE,
Written and performed by Dennis Coard, La
     Mama, Carlton, until April 14

The Fall of the Roman Umpire is Dennis Coard’s one-
person, intimate portrait of his journey through life,
and the audience is there beside him, sharing his joys,
     hopes and pain.

The show meets its responsibilities to humour with
Coard’s recollection of his childhood in Ireland.

Displaying impressive acting ability, Coard adopts
the roles of the people in his life and captivates the
audience with his raw emotion. A stand-out is his
impersonation of his grandfather as he waves a young
Coard and his family off to Australia from an Irish port.

A deathly quiet engulfs the theatre as the audience
soaks up the sorrow of an old man seeing his family
disappear over the horizon and out of his life.

Then, bang! Coard is up and running about the theatre
as he returns to his childhood and the wonder of a small
boy on an adventure to a new land.

It is a show of contrasts, but the one constant is Coard’s
     narrative skills.

As he follows his life’s story to Australia and his
journey into acting at the “ripe old age of 35”, Coard
continues to fascinate and delight, weaving magic from
     everyday existence.
