					                                Section on Medical Schools
                                     2009-2012 Strategic Plan



The American Medical Association (AMA) Section on Medical Schools provides all
LCME- and AOA-accredited medical schools and their faculty a voice in AMA House of
Delegates deliberations and offers a forum for discussing and developing policies on
medical education and national research and health care issues.


Continue to influence AMA policy and directives.
    •   submit resolutions to the House of Delegates (HOD) addressing issues important to the academic
        medical community
    •   review and discuss reports and resolutions being considered by the HOD
    •   provide testimony to the various HOD Reference Committees
    •   ensure that the importance of the Section’s policy setting role within the HOD is communicated
        to the academic medical community

Collaborate with the Council on Medical Education in its Initiative to Transform Medical Education
(ITME) as well as the monitoring of current issues, such as the ones listed below, that are impacting
medical education and assist in the implementation of appropriate advocacy plans.
   • medical education reform
   • financing of medical education
   • professionalism
   • medical student debt
   • impact of duty hours changes on the educational environment
   • physician workforce

Assist with the AMA Innovative Strategies for Transforming the Education of Physicians (ISTEP)
Initiative.
     • provide expertise
     • disseminate program information

Partner with other Councils and Special Groups within the AMA House of Delegates to make our AMA
an effective agent for change in the U.S. health care system.
    • work with the Council on Science and Public Health on issues relating to clinical research
    • work with the Council on Long Range Planning and Development to provide input into AMA’s
        strategic direction
    • work with the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs to advance physician professionalism and
        ethics
    • work with the Council on Medical Services regarding meaningful health system reform
    • work with the Council on Legislation regarding legislative relief for issues impacting medical
        education
    • work with the Minority Affairs Consortium to address issues of underrepresented U.S. physicians
        and improving the health of minority populations

Increase collaboration with the Medical Student and Resident and Fellow Sections to provide a more
unified voice representing medical education and academic medicine within the AMA.
    • develop joint programs, resolutions, and positions to influence AMA policy
    • continue to participate in the HOD Candidate Forum to interview candidates for the Board of
        Trustees, Board Officers, and Council on Medical Education

Develop a formal outreach program to encourage academic physicians to participate in Section activities.
    •   communicate the Section’s policy setting role within the AMA House of Delegates
    •   identify AMA delegates who have faculty appointments and meet with them
    •   contact Section representatives who do not participate in Section activities

Assist the AMA Foundation in its mission to advance health care through support of programs in medical
education, research, and services.
   • support Foundation activities
   • respond to requests for Section input into the Foundation’s selection of awardees
   • disseminate scholarship and program information

Continue to work with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to pursue common
initiatives.
     • schedule yearly meetings with the Council of Deans Administrative Board

Explore, with members of the AMA BOT Membership Task Force and Membership staff, ways to
increase academic physician membership.
    • investigate faculty/group practice and institutional membership options
    • develop specific recruitment materials highlighting the AMA advantage for academic physicians
        and AMA’s advocacy role in the improvement of medical education

Assist in the establishment of a task force of staff and representatives from the Governing Councils of all
Sections and Special Groups, to develop a formal mentor program.
    • send out a call for mentors of all ages
    • pair medical students with senior physicians or medical school faculty, and resident physicians
        with senior physicians or young physicians

Provide assistance to the AMA Board of Trustee Representation Outreach Program.
    •   coordinate and/or participate in medical school visits when appropriate

Partner with other organizations, as appropriate, to further the Section’s goals.

AMA Health Systems Reform Bulletin
A new weekly electronic newsletter is updating physicians and medical students about the AMA's
efforts to work with lawmakers in reforming the nation's health care system in a way that
provides quality, affordable health care for all. The Health System Reform Bulletin summarizes
the AMA's work on this essential topic in the public and private sector, including meetings with
the Obama administration and Congress, public initiatives and key dates.
