                                                OF THE

                                MAINE PRINCIPALS' ASSOCIATION

                                      BASEBALL COMMITTEE

                                         JANUARY 13, 2011

A meeting of the Baseball Committee was held on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at the MPA
office.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Jeff Benson, Larry Malone, and Steve Ouellette.

MEMBERS ABSENT: Ryan Enman and Gordie Salls (chair).

LIAISON PRESENT: Kevin Joyce.

LIAISON ABSENT: Al Livingston.

STAFF PRESENT: Michael Burnham.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On a MOTION by Ouellette/Malone, the minutes of the June 23, 2010
meeting were UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED.

CORRESPONDENCE: The following correspondence was reviewed and placed on file.

      A memo from NFHS discussing the moratorium placed on composite bats.
      A proposal from a coach outlining a preseason strength and conditioning program for high
       school baseball and softball players.
      An email from Dennis Crowe, Technology Coordinator for the Gorham School Department,
       identifying possible dates for the mandatory coaches’ clinics using the Tandberg Equipment.
      A copy of the 2011 NFHS Baseball Rule Changes.
      A memo from NFHS identifying baseball bats that were submitted and passed the Ball-Exit
       Speed Ration (BESR) and Batted-Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) certification tests for
       the NCAA.

COACHES' REPORT: None

OFFICIALS' REPORT:

      The officials are willing to conduct the mandatory rules clinics electronically using the Tandberg
       Equipment.
      A memo will be developed and sent to all schools explaining the new NFHS Bat Rule.
      There was some confusion surrounding the NFHS Concussion Rule. Copies of the Power Point
       Presentation along with the Concussion Guidelines developed by the MPA Sports Medicine
       Committee will be provided to the officials.

2010-2011 BULLETIN: The bulletin was reviewed and updated.

OTHER:

        The committee confirmed that batting practice will continue to take place in the batting cages at
         all championship sites.
        The dates and times for the regional and state championship games were reviewed.
        The committee asked that a letter be sent to the coach that had submitted the preseason
         conditioning program thanking him for taking the time to send along his proposal and to inform
         him that discussion with both the MPA Softball Committee and the MPA Sports Medicine
         Committee regarding the issue will continue this spring.
        Dates for the Mandatory Rules Clinics were set:

              o   Saturday, February 5, 2011          9:00am         Holiday Inn – Westbrook
                                                                     (part of coaches’ clinic)

              o   Thursday, March 10, 2011            6:30pm         Gorham Middle School
                                                                     (Electronic Sites TBD)

              o   Wednesday, March 23, 2011           6:30pm         Gorham Middle School
                                                                     (Electronic Sites TBD)

NEXT MEETING DATE: The next meeting of the Baseball Committee will be Thursday, June 2, 2011
at 9:30 a.m. at the MPA office.

ADJOURNMENT: On a MOTION by Ouellette/Malone, it was VOTED UNANIMOUSLY to adjourn at
12:40 p.m.
