Dear Parents and Carers

Friends of Rowdeford

Friends of Rowdeford started in the Autumn term of 2004. The aim is to raise funds for the benefit
of pupils here at Rowdeford and also to forge links between parents/carers and the school.

The Friends aim to run three events in a school year. The biggest is to help with the planning and
running of the Summer Fete. There is also an annual Quiz Night which is held in November –
details of this will be following shortly. The third event varies from year to year and has included
Christmas raffles for the pupils.

The proceeds from these events have purchased a lawnmower, helped create a quiet playground
area and raised money for the new Arts Centre. The group is small and enthusiastic and new
members are always welcome. There is an evening meeting once a term which is very informal.
The first meeting this year will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14 October in the Staff Room.

Please do come along, meet other parents and have fun whilst helping the school.

An orienteering event is being held at Rowdeford on Sunday 28 September, organised by the North
Wiltshire Orienteers.

This is designed to be fun for all the family with a number of events ranging from ‘Find the
Animals’ for young children to a 3km course for the more adventurous.

Registration is between 10.30 and 11.30am and the event finishes at 1pm.

The cost is £2 for seniors, £2 for a family group and £1 for juniors. There will also be a suggested
voluntary donation of £1 per car to be given to Rowdeford School.

Harvest Festival

Our annual Harvest Festival service is going to be held at school on Thursday 2 October. The
theme will be ‘Colours of Harvest.’

We would ask that on this day pupils bring in items from home such as fruit, vegetables, tins or
packets (all within the sell by date of course!) to put on the Harvest Table. After the service, all the
produce will be distributed to local homes for the elderly and to a hostel for homeless young people.

Unfortunately, due to lack of space, we are unable to invite parents to join us at this service but we
look forward to seeing you all at our Carol Service at Bromham Church on Friday 19 December.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Pupils in 10D are taking part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival which is an event taking place
across the whole country. Pupils from secondary schools have been working on a Shakespeare play
to perform in a professional theatre in front of a live audience.

We will be performing ‘The Tempest’ at The Merlin Theatre in Frome on Thursday 9 October. The
Merlin Theatre is on the same campus as Frome Community College in Bath Road.

Tickets are priced at £8 (£6 concessions) and are available from the box office on 01373 465949.
The performance starts at 7pm and will consist of Rowdeford and two other schools performing
different plays.

I hope you will be able to go to the Merlin Theatre to see our performance and support our pupils.

Operation Christmas Child

It’s that time of year again! For several years now we have collected shoeboxes to send to those
less fortunate than our own children. Attached is a leaflet explaining the scheme.

If you are unable to fill a whole shoebox, we would be very grateful for suitable items which the
boarders can use to make up boxes in the evenings. Useful items include toothpaste, small toys,
sweets (not chocolate), felt pens, flannels and anything else which will fit into a shoebox.

If you wish to know more about this scheme, please contact Linda Cook. She has been to deliver
the shoeboxes in the past and can provide pictures, DVDs and videos showing the joy that these
boxes bring.

Please send in your items as soon as possible and no later than 27 November.

Art Competition

The husband of one of our Teaching Assistants is organising an art competition to design some
pictures for his company and to brighten up his office at work. Pupils will be able to work on the
pictures in art lessons or in their own time.

The pictures need to show a computer being attacked by something ie a dinosaur, a dalek or a fierce
animal (no guns or weapons allowed.) Pictures should be on A4 paper and need to be finished and
given to Mrs Lakey by 2 October.

Mr Talmage will come in to judge the pictures and there will be cash prizes for the winning artists.

Youth Development Club

From Tuesday 14 October, 13-19 year olds from the Calne, Chippenham and Corsham areas are
invited to attend Calne Youth Development Centre on Tuesdays between 7.15 and 9.30 pm.

                                     Rowde, Devizes, Wiltshire SN10 2QQ
            Tel: 01380 850309 Fax: 01380 859708 e-mail: admin@rowdeford.wilts.sch.uk
Qualified Youth Development workers will be there to encourage young people to take part in
sports, arts and crafts, DJ skills, cooking and much more. It will also be an opportunity to meet and
socialise with other young people, talk about life issues with the assistants and plan projects and
trips out.

If you think your child would enjoy and benefit from these evenings, please contact
sallywillox@wiltshire.gov.uk or richardwilliams@wiltshire.gov.uk or telephone 01249 812509.

Plastic Tubs

Could you please send in any clean takeaway plastic tubs that you may have at home. They are very
useful in Food Technology lessons. Thank you.
