                         networks and SJ5
               Key Objectives of SJ5

      • A highly reliable network service over a resilient
        infrastructure.
      • Keep pace with capacity demand quickly and cost
        effectively
      • Separate network services for research and
        development
      • A flexible network to respond quickly to
        requirements

               Key Objectives of SJ5

These objectives are only achieved if delivered to
         insititutions across the regional networks

           - and, ultimately to end-user desktops and
         laboratories, etc.

                            networks and SJ5
                         Reliability

      • Reliability is complex. It depends both on:
         Individual components
               • Links, Routers, Switches, etc
               • Environment, expecially Power Supply
               • Accommodation - fire, flood, theft/vandelism

28 June 2005 Janet Strategic Briefing - Regional 5
                                    networks and SJ5
                            Reliability

and also on architecture - how the components are
        assembled and operated:
               • Alternates when components fail
               • Single points of failure
               • KISS
               • Testing
               • Staffing

28 June 2005 Janet Strategic Briefing - Regional 6
                                     networks and SJ5
                         Reliability

      Reliability at the longer term:
               • An occasional break of hours is irritating
               • A break of days or more can do institutional
                 damage
                  – Think Fire/Flood/Theft

28 June 2005 Janet Strategic Briefing - Regional 7
                                    networks and SJ5
                         Reliability

      Reliability at the shorter term:
               • An occasional break of minutes or even
                 seconds can disrupt time-critical applications
               • Frequent breaks of minutes can threaten time-
                 critical applications
                  – VOIP, Videoconferencing

                                    networks and SJ5
                    Reliability

For the best reliability we need no single
        points of failure anywhere
i.e. Dual connections, etc right to every
         institution’s doors (and within)

but is this affordable, or even possible?

                              networks and SJ5
                 Reliability

      The present prospect for SJ5:
      Dual entry into RNs √
      Resilient backbone √
      Dual instututional connection sometimes

                            networks and SJ5
                  Reliability

      Dual instututional connection:
      • Probably for institutions that are regional
PoPs, or possibly within favourable urban
        areas
      • In more challenging areas even bandwidth
is a problem - true diversity is a delusion

               Capacity and Separable
                    Bandwidth

      Bandwidth demand forecasting
      • Simple exponential growth?
      • Will escience deliver step increases in demand?
      • Will such traffic need separable bandwidth?
Both the RNOs and UKERNA need help with
       this from institutions

28 June 2005 Janet Strategic Briefing - Regional 13
                              networks and SJ5
               Capacity and Separable
                    Bandwidth

      Achieve this by:
      • Subdividing capacity - e.g. by MPLS
               • But extra complexity - KISS
      • Wavelength division multiplexing over dark fibre
               • Dark fibre availability and/or cost
               • WDM cost

28 June 2005 Janet Strategic Briefing - Regional 14

               Capacity and Separable
                    Bandwidth

      Sometimes only expensive managed services
       are available.
Getting a good deal depends on developing
a good relationship with a willing telecoms
       supplier who doesn’t feel threatened.

               RNO Funding - England

HEFCE has allocated ca £5m per year for 5 years.
English RNOs have submitted 5-year plans
These have been vetted by a panel
The money will be paid to the RNO as the
        expenditure is incurred

                              networks and SJ5
           RNO Funding - Scotland

The needs of the RNOs were surveyed in 2004
HE needs were broadly in line with English RNOs
RNOs are preparing 5-year SJ5 upgrade plans for
       the end of June
Plans will be evaluated in July
All the regional networks, including UHI, face a
        reprocurement in 2009.

                              networks and SJ5
           RNO Funding - Scotland

      FE needs are less clear-cut:
      • Needs are primarily bandwidth, but 5-year
        extrapalation is an uncertain process
      • Bandwidth (and even dual connection) is simple
        for some fortunate urban colleges
      • Some colleges are in areas where bandwidth is
        both challenging and expensive

                              networks and SJ5
           RNO Funding - Scotland

      FE needs:
      • Planned to fund upgrades as the need arises -
        year on year
      • Expected that the price/performance ratio will
        improve for more challenging destinations
      • Widespread Ethernet services would be a boon.

It is expected that the present Northern and
Southern regional networks will merge to form
         WREN.
It is hoped for synergy by combinging the needs
with those for the Life Long Learning community
A newly procured all-Wales network “fit for
        purpose”.

NIRAN has only recently been established
UKERNA is working with NIRAN to produce an
       appropriate upgrade plan for SuperJANET5
NIRAN will discuss this with DEL in early August

    Regional Networks Summary

Regional networks are working hard to deliver the
SJ5 key objectives of reliability, bandwidth, etc
Funding has been identified in England and
Scotland, and being sought in Wales and Northern
        Ireland

    Regional Networks Summary

Not all institutions will be reached with all the new
        services.
If your institution needs the new services, ensure
that both UKERNA and the RNO know about this
If your institution needs dual diverse entry from the
regional network, you should engage with both
         the regional network and UKERNA
