Kiwanis Club News Death of Rowland Watkins Rowland Watkins, member since 2006 and Kiwanis Board member was tragically killed March 10 in an automobile accident. An educational fund is being set up to assist his son, Roschard. Details will be announced as they become available. New Kiwanis Member - Cynthia A. Johnson Meet Cynthia A. Johnson. A native Detroiter, she was a candidate for State Representative from Detroit’s 6th District. A life-long community activist, she will work to make Detroit a great place to live. She was doing Kiwanis service before she became an “official member”. The Dictionary project interested her and she spent the day with the students after delivering the dictionaries. She will be actively involved in efforts to improve the city of Detroit. Annual Club Elections – June 7 The nomination committee, headed by Jim Heymes will provide the slate of candidates for your consideration prior to the June 7 meeting. Please plan to attend. Club Dues – Club dues have remained constant as club expenses have increased. There will be discussions of this issue at upcoming meetings. Plan on sharing your thoughts about if and how we might structure a small dues increase. Call Jeanette at (248 752-7147 if you can make it. April 30 – Spring Divisional Meeting for Divisions, 1, 3, and 7. This is the annual visit of Michigan Governor Bill Gohier. If you didn’t meet him at the birthday party, this is a great opportunity. The deadline for registration is April 22. Cost is $25 per person (includes lunch). This is where the Division’s Lieutenant Governors, Lt. Governor Designate and Division Trustee are elected. Our own Pat Hampton is the current Lieutenant Governor and is a Trustee Candidate. April 30- Skillman Foundation will host a 50th-anniversay-themed Kids Matter Here Summit II on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ford Field. The Foundation will have exciting updates on the Good Neighborhoods and Good Schools work. There will be food and music. Information will be available for families about excellent schools and preparing kids for college. Kiwanians, families and friends are needed to help with distributing the books to literacy groups and also to sticker the titles. This is a great service opportunity. Presidential Volunteer Award – Kiwanis #1 is tracking hours worked. Kiwanians Derrick Glencer and Tony Monk will soon unveil a chart with hours worked.
