            Death of Rowland Watkins
            Rowland Watkins, member since 2006 and Kiwanis Board member was tragically killed March 10 in an
            automobile accident. An educational fund is being set up to assist his son, Roschard. Details will be
            announced as they become available.

                                     New Kiwanis Member - Cynthia A. Johnson

     Meet Cynthia A. Johnson. A native Detroiter, she was a candidate for State Representative from Detroit’s 6th
     District. A life-long community activist, she will work to make Detroit a great place to live. She was doing
     Kiwanis service before she became an “official member”. The Dictionary project interested her and she spent
     the day with the students after delivering the dictionaries. She will be actively involved in efforts to improve the
     city of Detroit.

      Annual Club Elections – June 7
     The nomination committee, headed by Jim Heymes will provide the slate of candidates for your consideration
     prior to the June 7 meeting. Please plan to attend.

     Club Dues – Club dues have remained constant as club expenses have increased. There will be
     discussions of this issue at upcoming meetings. Plan on sharing your thoughts about if and how we might
     structure a small dues increase.

     Kris Marianne’s father, John Jay Bateman, passed away on March16. Kris has requested that memorials be
     made to the Michigan Humane Society.
     Kim Walsh, stepfather, Richard White passed away on April 5th.
     Marcia Ford’s father, Richard P. Ford, passed on March 17th. Her family has requested that memorial
     donations be made to the Michigan Kidney Foundation

April 30 – Spring Divisional Meeting for Divisions, 1, 3, and 7. This is the annual visit of Michigan
Governor Bill Gohier. If you didn’t meet him at the birthday party, this is a great opportunity. The deadline for
registration is April 22. Cost is $25 per person (includes lunch). This is where the Division’s Lieutenant
Governors, Lt. Governor Designate and Division Trustee are elected. Our own Pat Hampton is the current
Lieutenant Governor and is a Trustee Candidate. Come out and support her. If you can attend, call Pat at (202)
257-2950. The meeting starts at 11:00 and will be done by 2:00. Location: American Polish Cultural Club, 2975
E. Maple, Troy, MI.

April 30- Skillman Foundation will host a 50th-anniversay-themed Kids Matter Here Summit II on Saturday,
April 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ford Field. The Foundation will have exciting updates on the Good
Neighborhoods and Good Schools work. There will be food and music. Information will be available for families
about excellent schools and preparing kids for college. Joe Lentine Sr. will be getting more information out

May 1 March of Dimes Walk for babies – We are a sponsor. Sign up online at If you can’t walk, collect funds. Donate
online. Call Thom at (248) 202-0804 or Jeanette at (248) 752-7147 if you plan to walk. Park free at Woodward
Public School Academy which is located at 951 E. Lafayette. Vehicles can enter and exit from the Chrysler

May 2 – Kiwanis International Canada/USA Goodwill Banquet – 6:00 p.m. Black River Country Club, 3300
County Club Drive, Port Huron. Cost $25. Secretary Jim is planning to attend. Please call him at (517) 349-
7589 if you can make this event which promises fun and fellowship.

Books for Kids New titles are still coming in. Kiwanians, families and friends are needed to help with
distributing the books to literacy groups and also to sticker the titles. This is a great service opportunity. Give
Joe Lentine, Jr. a call at (313) 972-1400 x225 if you can help. Books are distributed on the 1st and 3rd
Mondays of the month from 3-6PM.

Presidential Volunteer Award – Kiwanis #1 is tracking hours worked. Kiwanians Derrick Glencer and Tony
Monk will soon unveil a chart with hours worked. Please forward your service hours to Tony at Awards will be presented at next year’s birthday party.

Dictionary Project -
Help is still needed to deliver dictionaries to 3rd graders in Detroit Public Schools. This is a great project. You
meet 3rd graders and share the love of words. Thanks to those who have been working to deliver these
dictionaries. Soon we will be doing charter schools in Detroit. Contact Joe Lentine, Sr. at (248) 212-3812.

Community Service Food Collection – Please remember to bring nonperishable food to the first meeting of
each month. Dr. Kris Miranne will collect the food from your car.
