                                                    AROUND THE LEAGUE
Part of our mission as The Marine Corps League is to provide support and assistance to all past, present and future Marines!
We, as Marines and/or family members, have experienced being away from our loved ones. We know what it is like to be
away from home whether it is at a duty base in the states or overseas in a strange land. It is now our turn and obligation to
provide the “Marine Family” support to those still in combat and those returning from harm’s way as well as all those non-
combat individuals that support our troops.
If your Detachment has a Web Sergeant to take care of your National web listing (and every detachment should), please
make sure that your listing information is up to date. I see a number of postings on the National site about perspective
members not being able to locate valid contact information. If it is your detachment, you are losing new members. If your
Detachment does not have a Web Sergeant, contact National and get one set up. It is easy to do, doesn’t cost you a penny but
can be a big help in recruiting.
                                                                                       Don Haines, Editor

                                                 7th DISTRICT COMMANDANT

Greetings to the 7th District (And to the rest of you that care to read this.)

First off I would like to thank those that voted for me to stand up as the 7th District Commandant. And to those that didn’t,
I won’t hold it against you, if you don’t hold it against me. Against me that I am not the person you chose. I ask that you give
me the opportunity to earn your vote for next year, and your trust that I can make a difference.
First off, one of the things I ran on was that I want to bring our Detachments together, along with improving membership
blah blah blah…I’m sure all of this has been heard before, how are my statements any different? Whether the 7th district or
not?
For starters I would like to see Marines from all of our detachments come out for an outing or two together. Our
detachment has been trying to make it up to Olin pistol range to shoot. I don’t suppose the rest of you know how to point a .45
or 9mm pistol downrange? How about a traveling trophy for the sole purpose of bragging rights? This was mentioned up at
convention and one of those “northern” detachments expressed that they would be more than willing to come down and take it
from us. What do you say?
Also there is an effort that started with the 3rd Battalion 24 th Marines & staff to have a November 12th Marine Birthday
luncheon. As more information with regard to time and place has been decided, I’ll pass the word. So keep the 12th of
November in mind if you’re in the St. Louis area around that date. Target number is 2000+ Marines celebrating our birthday in
downtown STL.
Some of you know that Detachment #74 has been putting on a BBQ. In addition to butcher shop meats, if you care to
partake, a bit of “you kill it, we’ll grill it” goes on. We have talked about inviting the other local detachments to this in the
past. Maybe if there is some interest shown, we could have a BBQ/Auction in the fall. Nothing says camaraderie and bringing
us together like grilled meats, some sea stories, and an adult beverage or two.
Let’s make our detachments stronger, and lessen the 10,000 League members not renewing by talking about life
memberships. Something that we’re trying at our detachment, and I believe now at Lincoln Land, is a Life membership
layaway plan. If you’re interested in hearing more about this let me know. Keeping our members in our league and on the
roster can be accomplished this way.
Another way of keeping members in our league is keeping our meeting times down or brief, as well as cutting out the petty
bickering, or droning on and on about a topic that has been discussed again and again. The key word here is being brief.
Well carry on, as you were, and Semper Fi.
                                                                                          Hlava, D

                                                 CHICAGO POLICE MARINES

On Saturday, May 1st, a contingent of Chicago Police Marine members made the annual trip to Manteno Veteran’s home to
socialize, provide lunch for the veterans there and present a check for $3000.00 to Kathy Sanzotta, the Director of
Volunteer/Activity Services. This was my first trip down to Manteno and I guarantee you that it will not be my last. The
veterans that live at Manteno and the other veteran’s homes are always happy to have visitors to sit and talk, have a bite to eat
and just spend some time with other veterans who come down. Marines, the veterans that have served before us are deserving
of the gratitude and help that we can provide for them. They have paved the way for us, just as we are paving the way for
those that follow. As your circumstances permit, please take some time to visit our veterans and thank them for their service
while we still have the opportunity to do so.

                                                                  15

                                                   COLLINSVILLE DETACHMENT

Greetings from Collinsville Detachment #74, after a couple of these notes not being turned in by “Yours Truly” it
was decided to get a letter up to Marine Haines no matter what it takes. So here it is…
Quite a bit has happened since the last report, several BBQ’s, Toys for Tots, and recently an officer installation both at
Department, and here at the Detachment. Marine Hanser, one of our Commandants from years past (1960’s maybe) performed
the installation. Once again I have to say I’m honored to stand in front of the fine group of Marines, both young and old that
makes up our detachment. But taking a page from the Navy, A captain of a ship is only as good as the men, and now women
that actually do the work. Thanks for doing the work and helping keep our “ship” out of troubled waters, and helping to
navigate out of them when we were there.
If I called out every Marine or Associate that “did the work” I could fill pages, (this is not exactly brief anyway.) so let me
hit some high points and efforts. TfT required all of our work, as well as prospects that hadn’t even finished their MCL
applications. Welcome to prospect, now member Craig Miller, who recently help Lovey out at Department. (Ask someone
that was there, or get there next time;-) Similar to other detachments; at the helm for TfT, were a Marine and his wife, in our
case Marine Kee. With little to no direction last year, scuttlebutt has it that the Kee’s will be able to take this battle to the next
level; the battle being, kids without toys.
I’d say take warning if you get in the way of these 2. Last years’ parade had jeeps, a Hummer, Fire truck, EMT, Police, a
Brass band, Veterans bikers, you name it, and not quite as cold as the first years attempt. I wonder if the streets of Collinsville
can hold up to an Abrams?
The kids, what about the kids and toys you say? Like probably the rest of the detachments, in this “recession” many more
were helped than last year. Toy’s R Us collected many, monies were spent for toys, and trailers were filled, as well as dining
rooms, garages, and VFW halls. The effort was expanded greatly over the year before. Great job!
As I noted earlier one of our pervious Commandants has returned to our active members, if you will. And a warm welcome
to the return of our only WM, from Korean service no less, Loretta, or Joan as she prefers. She returned with a somewhat
tattered Detachment flag that will hopefully be restored to bring up to Department. If only that flag could give us some sea
stories and history of the Detachment, or Department.
Speaking of Department and older members, Marine Cable has been by my side for Department Staff meetings and
convention, many thanks for the help Claude. Unfortunately “Y’all” have to hear about him being “stove up” when he rides in
my car to these Marine gatherings. Maybe I can sneak the wife’s vehicle, like another Marine in our detachment, for the
Sandwich meeting. Hers has a little more cushy ride.
This letter would not be complete without some rambling about the spring BBQ. Previous to the BBQ another Marine
joined our ranks, this Marine with tracks, tanks, amphibs or something. He did perk when the venerable YATYAS was
uttered. But that is not what is unique about Udell. At our BBQ, a silent auction was halted, as this once Captain of Marines
stepped on top of a picnic table and began auctioning off items in traditional auctioneer style. I dare say the highlight of
the day!
And finally, notes on Memorial Day. Four from the Detachment participated in the Collinsville parade. Many members
had a prior commitment elsewhere, which is understood. There were 2 that rode, and 2 that carried stainless ‘03’s at shoulder
arms for duration. And since the 2 that rode were both out of the Corps over 50 years ago, my measly 24 put me ditty-bopping
on the block with weapon in hand.
Keep up the great work all y’all, and if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, get there, even if you’re with or at another
detachment besides #74!
    As always Semper Fi,
                                                                                          HLAVA, D

                                                                 16
                                                  FOX VALLEY MARINES

The Fox Valley Marines held a Pancake breakfast on May, with a great turnout of both volunteers and hungry guests.
Scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, fruit, pastries and of course, biscuits and gravy were served and consumed at a frantic
pace. Thanks to all the volunteers that worked so tirelessly slaving over hot griddles and serving KP duty in the kitchen.
At the June meeting a Detachment Guideon was dedicated to Marine Lee Dungey, one of our departed members and a
WWII veteran. June 10 th saw the installation of our new officers with many thanks to the installing team of 2 nd District
Commandant Marty Smith, Department Judge Advocate Mike Ruffner and Department Chaplain Troy Walker.
                                                                                        Semper Fi,
                                                                                        Don Haines

NEWS FROM THE WEST CENTRAL ILLINOIS LEATHERNECKS DETACHMENT AND AUXILIARY UNIT
Our detachment continues to grow. Three new members joined our ranks since my last report. Congratulations and a big
OOH RAH to Associate Member Brian Coe and Regular Members Melvin Jones and Ken Stark. Melvin and I graduated from
high school in the same class and went to MCRD San Diego together. Ken was a Charter member of our detachment but had
other priorities at that time and dropped out. We are glad to have all three aboard!
Members Leroy Garrison, Jerry Lowe, Dick Matthews, Jess Meado, Carol Smith, and I spent a day sprucing up the grounds
of the Vietnam Memorial in Nichols Park just prior to Memorial Day. There were more weeds than flowers along the pathway
leading to the Memorial so we decided to dig out the bulbs, till, spread a weed barrier, and replace the areas with gravel. We
also mowed, cut tree limbs, and trimmed shrubs. Thanks to all who helped!
Our Memorial Day raffle was a huge success this year. We sold out of tickets after a slow start, thanks to manning a station
at Midland Farm and Home on Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The drawing was won by Shawn Force of
Jacksonville. He opted to take the $500 cash prize. Thanks to all who supported our campaign.
The West Central Illinois Leathernecks were well-represented at the Department Convention in Quincy. On the Auxiliary
side, Carol Smith was elected Senior Vice President, and Jan Carleton was elected Chaplain and 4 th District VP. Connie Bryant
will join Carol on the Advisory Council at the Quincy Veterans Home. Jim Carleton will serve again as 5 th District
Commandant and was elected Junior Vice Pack Leader of the Devil Dogs. Tom Wilson advanced to Devil Dog. Warren
Musch was selected 2010 Pack Dog of the Year. Members Bob Komnick and John Waltrip were also in attendance. Yours
truly will complete another term as Junior Vice Commandant and serve as Pack Leader for the IL Pack. Thank you, Marines,
for honoring me as your 2010 Marine of the Year.

Letter from 1-May-2010
Marines and FMF Corpsmen:
The Marine Corps League across our great nation currently has a shortfall of 10,000 members. The reason for this dilemma is
delinquent dues. While recruiting new members is important, retention is also vital.
There are many reasons why members do not renew their memberships. Among these are:
     They may have set aside their renewal notice and forgot to send in their dues;
     They may be experiencing financial hardship because of job loss or health issues;
     They may have had negative experiences while attending meetings or assisting with projects;
 They need the assistance of other Marines/FMF Corpsman to offer transportation.
Whatever the reason, every effort must be made by the detachment to welcome these members back!!!
Please allow me to offer some suggestions which I hope you will share with your members at your next meeting:
 Make personal contact with each delinquent member. Ask him/her if they simply forgot to renew their dues or if there
is another problem. This could be a shared responsibility. If a member has a special connection to the delinquent
member, a personal phone call or visit by that comrade may be in order.
 If the delinquent member has had a personal crisis, such as job loss or illness, the detachment should offer to pay the
member’s dues until he/she is in a better position to do so. Each detachment should have a Veterans’ Assistance Pro-
gram in place which allows for funds to be used to help fellow members in need.
 Once the member’s dues are current, find out if transportation to meetings and/or special events is needed. Then ask
another member who lives in the same vicinity to pick him/her up.
 When a delinquent member does attend another meeting or event, make a point of talking to that member and involve
him/her in the meeting or activity. Every member needs to feel welcome and needed!

                                                              17
I would also like to offer a few suggestions on conducting meetings and holding events to help keep members involved:
 Have an agenda ready for every meeting and make copies available to all members prior to the meeting. Informed
members are more likely to stay interested and active.
 Set a time limit for each meeting. As Commandant of my detachment, I always try to keep monthly meetings under
one hour. If they run any longer, I guarantee that you will lose some members!
 Speak up! As members age, many of them have don’t hear as well as they once did. If you have a microphone avail -
able, use it. And ask members for their input; don’t just assume they will offer it.
 If you have an upcoming fundraising event or need members to serve on committees, send around a sign-up list.
Some members may not speak up but will sign up to help if asked.
 Plan some “fun” opportunities for camaraderie outside of meetings and fundraisers. Plan a weekly coffee outing, bi -
monthly dinner together, or summer barbecue, all of which include spouses and auxiliary members. These get-togeth-
ers create opportunities to become better acquainted. My detachment does all three.
For additional tips on retention and recruitment, read my article in each issue of The Illinois Marine.
Letter from 10-June-2010
Marines and FMF Corpsmen:
In my last letter to you in March 2010, I focused on member retention. I hope you got a few useful tips for keeping members
and assisting delinquent members in renewing their membership in our great organization. If you would like to reference that
letter, it appears again (along with this one) in The Illinois Marine. If you want it e-mailed to you, please contact me.
Now I am going to get on my bandstand and talk about recruiting new members. I feel that I am somewhat qualified to
speak on the subject since I recruited seven new members during the past year. Maybe I was lucky, but I’d like to think that I
worked hard to get the job done!
I believe that, first and foremost, your detachment must be an active one. That doesn’t mean just holding monthly meetings
either. Being visible in your community is essential to the growth of your membership! Here are some of the things that my
detachment does in our community:
 Everywhere we go, our members wear something that says “MARINE!” I never see another member out in public
who is not wearing a USMC or Marine Corps League cap or shirt. It is imperative for potential members to see that
we proudly wear OUR attire. This will catch the attention of any retired, former, or active duty Marine. We always
get an “OOH RAH” or “Semper Fi” from them (which is a no-brainer that it’s time to go into action). Reach out and
shake their hand and introduce yourself. Ask if they are familiar with the Marine Corps League (the best kept secret
of the Marine Corps). Briefly explain what we do: support our troops, our wounded, our veterans, and our com -
munity. Remember that membership application that you carry in your wallet? Pull it out and hand it and your per -
sonal business card to them. It should already have most of the information completed (detachment, dues amount,
etc.) Make sure you get their phone number or email address. If you don’t get a response within a week or two, call
or e-mail and invite them to your next meeting and offer a ride. Don’t give up! If they are unable to attend, call again
just prior to your next meeting.
 Make some brochures that showcase the Marine Corps League and, specifically, your detachment. Distribute them to
local and area businesses. Hotels and restaurants are great places to have brochures displayed. Be sure to include a
membership application as a part of the brochure and contact information for one or more of your officers. Also in -
clude your meeting date, time, and place. If you have an Auxiliary unit, include their information as well.
 Speaking of the Auxiliary, why don’t you have one? Our Auxiliary ladies are one of the best things that have
happened to us. They support us 100% in all of our fundraising efforts and participate at patriotic events alongside us.
They help us plan our events and take charge of decorations and food. Some of our members joined the League be -
cause their wives encouraged them to do so. Several of the ladies carry both Auxiliary and Marine Corps League ap-
            plications with them.
 Parades are great opportunities to be seen in public. Our detachment members participate in six to eight parades annu-
ally. We always provide a Color Guard. Other members march in formation behind. For many parades, we have a
deuce and a half (the owner is now an Honorary Member) for members to ride and toss candy to the spectators. We
also have a jeep and a convertible for those members who need a ride and for the auxiliary ladies. Each vehicle is em-
bellished with signs proclaiming who we are!
 Use the media! We regularly submit letters to the editor of the local newspaper thanking the community for their sup-
port of our fundraising events. Included is always a list of things we support with our funds (Marines Helping Mar -
ines, Illinois Veterans’ Home – Quincy, deployed troops, etc.) Citizens are always willing to dig deeper, and re -
peatedly, when they know that their money is going to a good cause. When we hold a fundraising event, we publicize
these activities on local radio, in the local newspaper, and on flyers distributed throughout the community. We also
take lots of pictures of our events and submit them for publication in the paper. We have a weekly section in the pa-
per called “Faces and Place”. Rarely does a week go by that there isn’t a photo of some Leaguer making a check
presentation, accepting a donation, or presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to a deserving business or individual.

                                                                18
I hope that I have provided some ideas that you can use in your recruiting efforts. Please share this letter with your
membership at your next meeting. I wish you the best of luck because the future of the Marine Corps League depends on it. If
I can be of further assistance, I am only a phone call or e-mail away. I can be reached at 217-245-8918 or
carolnco@mchsi.com.

                                                                                     Semper Fidelis,
                                                                                     C.O. Smith, Jr. Vice Commandant

GOOD NIGHT “CHESTY” WHERE EVER YOU ARE
There is a project in the works to erect a statue of LtGen Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller on the grounds of the National Marine
Corps Museum. This will be the first ever done to honor one of the greatest Marines to ever wear our uniform. The "Chesty"
Puller Statue Fund is looking for donations for this statue. Information can be gathered by calling 1st Sgt. Jim Barnett, USMC

Phil was a very special young man. He loved his family and he was a loyal friend. He always put the needs of others
before his own. On September 11, 2001, after watching a plane hit the World Trade Center and then watching as the first
tower collapsed, he resolved to do something to protect his country and those he loved. He had just begun his senior year in
high school.
Phil enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in November 2002. On the day he graduated Boot Camp at MCRD in San
Diego, as he introduced us to his fellow graduates, he explained that because these were his brothers, they were now our sons.
Phil honored us by the way he lived his life and by the way he gave his live. To honor his memory and continue his caring
spirit, we have begun THE HEART OF A MARINE FOUNDATION.

The Heart Of A Marine Foundation in a non-profit organization that provides comfort, support, financial assistance and
educational resources to improve the quality of life of military personnel in all branches of the United States Armed Forces,

                                          “MARINE 4 LIFE” PROGRAM
As our Marines transition out into civilian life, they may be in need of jobs or training to get them back into the main
stream. You can become a mentor/resource for them to contact by visiting the Marine 4 Life web site at www.m4l.usmc.mil
and registering. This worthwhile program has already helped a number of Marines and many more may need it. These young
men and women are now a part of our family and, as you would seek to help your own family, I would ask that you try to do
the same for them.
A Job Fair format seems to be the wave of the future in getting Marines and employers in the Chicagoland area together.
Capt. Dan Davis and Major Jeffrey Meisenger, the new Hometown Link Chicago West, are charging ahead with the program.
Business owners and the corporate sponsors, who put these luncheons together, deserve a large thank you for the work that
they do. The Job Fair format is being thought of as a replacement for the bi-monthly luncheons.
More information can be obtained by contacting Capt. Davis at 773 401-8544 or dandavisM4L@gmail.com. Information
can also be found by contacting the Illinois Department of Employment Security Veteran Representatives: Andrew
